We bought a historic home in Maplewood over the summer and wanted to find a reliable heating system & plumbing guy to service the vintage (probably 50+ years old) boiler and radiator system, as well as do some plumbing work.  A neighbor recommended Gateway.  They were booked up for a while, so we called Roto-Rooter to come out and unclog a drain.  The Roto-Rooter guy wanted $379 to unclog one bathroom sink -- WHOA!  Then he asked if we'd be willing to pay $150 or so, cash.  We decided to pass on that offer and wait for Gateway.

SOOOOO GLAD WE DID!  Gateway showed up on time for the appointment and sent two men (Sean and Greg), one to focus on the boiler and the other to do the other plumbing work, so I wouldn't be spending my whole day watching a plumber's butt.  They gave us estimates before starting any work -- $185 for the boiler service, and $65 to unclog a drain (that's $300 less than Roto-Rooter for unclogging the drain).  They got to work quickly and efficiently, showed me what they were doing, and explained what I needed to do every couple weeks to keep this boiler working efficiently.  

Here's the best part -- after they serviced the boiler, the secondary fail-safe system triggered and the boiler wouldn't restart.  They identified the problem and had the part in the truck which surprised me somewhat as this is an old system.  They explained that the part was $465, I authorized it and they installed it.  It still didn't work.  They traced the problem to a brittle switch in the electrical system, re-connected it, and the system worked.  THEN they took off the new part, put my old part back on, proved that the old part still worked fine, and charged me ZERO/ZIP/ZILCH|/NADA for parts and service for this task.  Clearly I was an ignorant sucker that would have paid them $465, but they went out of their way to verify that that was necessary before selling me the part.

Sean and Greg are two personable, honest guys who take pride in their expertise, craftsmanship, and customer service.  They like working for Gateway because it is an honest shop, and because it's a Union shop that trains their men up and provides benefits.  In addition to doing plumbing work on-call, they also have the opportunity to build their skills and expertise by working on new construction projects.

So, if you want honest, enthusiastic professionals who will give you fair estimates before starting the work, explain what they're doing, and educate you on the systems you own, call Gateway.  If you want to be grossly overcharged, there are other places out there who will be happy to take your money.

I dont need a plumber every day... but when I do, Guarini is the only one I would use or recommend.  These guys are great.  Today I had banging noises in my furnace, I called them, they were there before their estimate, took care of the situation, and were out in a little over an hour.  Chris was great, he explained what he was planning to do and what he thought the problem was, and sure enough, fixed it right away.  
I have only great words and recommendations for this Plumbing and heating company.... I have used them on an off for over 18 years.  They are the best you can get in Jersey City!

Paul worked on certifying the plumbing for my house in NYC when I was trying to get my 2nd fl bathroom legalized. He is a straight forward guy and honest. He explained what my different options were and what it would cost. If there was something he wasn't sure about he was honest about it.
Even though it took a long time to get the bathroom signed off on by the Dept of Blds(because of bureaucratic nonsense), Paul was always prompt with taking care of things at his end. His work is good and he was responsive to emails and phone calls which is something you don't always get. I would recommend him any day.

I had a very bad waste pipe and house drain pipe break in the basement. It was REALLY BAD! I called Fenix Pipe Repair and Mike answered the call. He came and analyzed the problem and the very next day fixed everything. He went above and beyond my expectations and gave me a very good price for the work. He used quality materials and did the job quickly! Mike is very professional, courteous, knowlegeable and considerate. He came on time. He was able to spot other smaller problems and fix them too! I can't say enough good things about him and thank you doesn't suffice for all that he has done for me and my family. He is now our official plumber! Thank you again!

Wow.  These guys are fantastic.  I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to find Richie D. online and write one for him after the great work his company did for me today.  

After MANY bad experiences with plumbers, contractors, etc. in Jersey City, it was a pleasure to work with Richie D. Drain Cleaning. My whole experience with them was excellent, from beginning to end:  First of all, when I initially called them, someone immediately picked up the phone, and directed me to someone else who was actively driving around and doing jobs.  Amazingly enough, that person (a great guy named Ival) answered the phone, and he arranged to come to my house later that morning (this is great, but doesn't always mean I'll actually see anyone, since I can't tell you the number of times I've scheduled same-day appointments with people I never saw or heard from again).  Best of all, he actually showed up.  So, that was the first bit of good news.  

The second bit of good news, which is even better and much more important, is that Ival was truly excellent at his job. Upon arrival, he discovered not only that our main sewer line was clogged, but so too was the pipe to our emergency sump pump, which we rely very heavily upon during Jersey City rain storms.  Even worse, the pit the sump pump was sitting in was filled with actual feces, since our main sewer clog had caused a lot of disgusting back up.  As it happens, though, the sump pump was not what I had originally called him about, and I would have never known that it wasn't working until we had a rain emergency.  Ival was incredible.  Not only did he clear the sump pump pipe, but he did the unthinkable and painstakingly cleaned out the feces-filled pit with a wet vac, bucket, and 10-12 trips carrying a grey water-filled bucket to the toilet in our downstairs bathroom, each time thoughtfully REMOVING HIS SHOES so as to keep our house as clean as possible.  I cannot tell you how many times we have had jerks in our house who do the bare minimum and then charge an arm and a leg for nothing.  It was the opposite here.  They went above and beyond and were some of the most thoughtful and considerate people I've ever had do work in my house.  Do yourself a favor and call Richie D.!

Jimmy with Allstate is my family's  two-time hero! He solved a leaking ceiling and a bungled refrigerator install with minimal time and cost. He was available for both repairs within an hour off  my call. He was so knowledgeable and super friendly! We are really happy to know Jimmy and to have a plumber we can trust!

I had Alive Plumbing come out to fix my plumbing and they were fabulous. They are so friendly and nice and when they work they keep their area clean, which I love. They do such fantastic work that I will always call them to come and fix any plumbing problems that I have.

Unless your issue is urgent it may be a wait to get a visit from Jimmy.  He always pulls through when in need and never has to come back to take another look. One visit and your problem is fixed. Thank you!!

Very, very pleased with the service I received today. The faucet in my shower stopped working last night (the handle turned and turned but no water came out). I called several plumbers beginning at 8:00 am this morning. Guarini Plumbing answered my call and the receptionist was professional and pleasant. She explained the rates to me and spoke to a supervisor to see if they could fit me in today. I was told a plumber could be here between 9:00. am and noon, so I took the appointment. The plumber called my cell phone at 9:45 to confirm my address and let me know that he would be here in about half an hour. The two plumbers who came to my house were pleasant and professional. They quickly figured out what was wrong with my faucet, turned off the water in my building, got the part from their truck, got the faucet reassembled and working and the water back on within 35 minutes of arriving. They charged exactly what I was told they would charge when I called this morning. I will not hesitate to use them again and will recommend them to my friends and neighbors.

Mike was honest, professional, and fairly priced. I sent him a message via Yelp to describe my boiler issue. He promptly called me to further discuss and confirm my address. 45 minutes later he was at my front door. It couldn't have been more than 2 hours from the time I sent him the message to the the time the job was completed. The short turnaround was just a bonus. Even if I had waited half the day, his work was so neat and efficient that it would have been well worth it. I will continue to use this company for all my plumbing and heating needs. My house had gas leak by the gas meter and I called National Grid and they temporarily fixed the problem and gave me 5 days to get a plumber for permenant fix. I called the plumber accross my house right away on Monday morning before going to work. He came saw the problem and said he might need to get a permit, will let me know the next day. Next morning I go, he still did not call, tells me he will give me estimate Wednesday.
Wednesday, he came to check the leak one more time and told me the whole gas line needs to change and the cost would be $3000. I told him just fix the problem, don't create additional work. I told him to give me time to decide and came home and logged on internet to find other plumbers in the area.

Thank God I came across A Farr Plumbing and after reading the reviews I gave him a call. John, the owner, came two hours later to see the problem.
He said it can be fixed without changing the full gas line and told me he will call me the next morning to give his estimate . John called me next morning and said he will fix it for $650. I was happy with his price, and  we agreed for him to come at 8 in the morning Monday. He called Sunday to confirm it again and Monday morning at 7:45, he was at my door. He finished the problem in three hours and later on showed me what was done and walked me through the gas appliances to make sure that they were working.
After John left, I called National Grid for reinspection, they came and said all was fine. The other plumber was saying that he had to test 90% pressure test and that it wont hold, well John did all those tests and it is fine, but also informed me that additional problem might arise while fixing but thank god, nothing happened.

John is a professional guy, I will always call him for any plumbing problems. I also recommended him to my friends. The other plumber saw me this morning and asking me if I got a good estimate from A Farr Plumbing because he must have seen the van in my drivway, I just said much lower than yours and it is all fine nowand walked away.

I needed a new water heater after sandy and Bill came over to install it. Professional, neat work and I've never had a problem with it since, he did the job right. Some plumbers in the past have done poor work that starts to leak months later, but I've never had s problem with bill and will continue to recommend him to friends and family

Samba took his time & figured out what was wrong with my flushometer & saved me from having to replace the whole thing! I so appreciate his effort!

This company seemed like they were good and very pleasent on the phone but then after coming a day later than expected the plumber lied about the time he spent at my house and totally ripped me off. I should have made them write it down when arriving and leaving but instead I stupidly trusted them. I also don't believe that they didn't go for lunch for an hour while getting the part. I will never use them again!
