We bought a historic home in Maplewood over the summer and wanted to find a reliable heating system & plumbing guy to service the vintage (probably 50+ years old) boiler and radiator system, as well as do some plumbing work.  A neighbor recommended Gateway.  They were booked up for a while, so we called Roto-Rooter to come out and unclog a drain.  The Roto-Rooter guy wanted $379 to unclog one bathroom sink -- WHOA!  Then he asked if we'd be willing to pay $150 or so, cash.  We decided to pass on that offer and wait for Gateway.

SOOOOO GLAD WE DID!  Gateway showed up on time for the appointment and sent two men (Sean and Greg), one to focus on the boiler and the other to do the other plumbing work, so I wouldn't be spending my whole day watching a plumber's butt.  They gave us estimates before starting any work -- $185 for the boiler service, and $65 to unclog a drain (that's $300 less than Roto-Rooter for unclogging the drain).  They got to work quickly and efficiently, showed me what they were doing, and explained what I needed to do every couple weeks to keep this boiler working efficiently.  

Here's the best part -- after they serviced the boiler, the secondary fail-safe system triggered and the boiler wouldn't restart.  They identified the problem and had the part in the truck which surprised me somewhat as this is an old system.  They explained that the part was $465, I authorized it and they installed it.  It still didn't work.  They traced the problem to a brittle switch in the electrical system, re-connected it, and the system worked.  THEN they took off the new part, put my old part back on, proved that the old part still worked fine, and charged me ZERO/ZIP/ZILCH|/NADA for parts and service for this task.  Clearly I was an ignorant sucker that would have paid them $465, but they went out of their way to verify that that was necessary before selling me the part.

Sean and Greg are two personable, honest guys who take pride in their expertise, craftsmanship, and customer service.  They like working for Gateway because it is an honest shop, and because it's a Union shop that trains their men up and provides benefits.  In addition to doing plumbing work on-call, they also have the opportunity to build their skills and expertise by working on new construction projects.

So, if you want honest, enthusiastic professionals who will give you fair estimates before starting the work, explain what they're doing, and educate you on the systems you own, call Gateway.  If you want to be grossly overcharged, there are other places out there who will be happy to take your money.

I dont need a plumber every day... but when I do, Guarini is the only one I would use or recommend.  These guys are great.  Today I had banging noises in my furnace, I called them, they were there before their estimate, took care of the situation, and were out in a little over an hour.  Chris was great, he explained what he was planning to do and what he thought the problem was, and sure enough, fixed it right away.  
I have only great words and recommendations for this Plumbing and heating company.... I have used them on an off for over 18 years.  They are the best you can get in Jersey City!

Just brought a water tank from. The customer services there was awesome. The manager helped me the whole way and even gave me a discount.

Robek was fantastic when we had a problem. They showed up when they said they would and took care of our clogged sink quickly and completely. They cleaned up so as not to leave a trace of anyone ever being there. Price was fair and service top notch. Highly recommended.

Paul worked on certifying the plumbing for my house in NYC when I was trying to get my 2nd fl bathroom legalized. He is a straight forward guy and honest. He explained what my different options were and what it would cost. If there was something he wasn't sure about he was honest about it.
Even though it took a long time to get the bathroom signed off on by the Dept of Blds(because of bureaucratic nonsense), Paul was always prompt with taking care of things at his end. His work is good and he was responsive to emails and phone calls which is something you don't always get. I would recommend him any day.

Our pipes got frozen from the two consecutive sub 20 degree days. Tried every troubleshooting method before calling for back up. Mike was able to come by.. look it over. Prescribe a few things. Then he returned and noticed minimal change so he went to work. He did not give up and eventually found the issue. Using innovative techniques he got it going. Will have water and heat tonight! Jimmy and his team provided excellent service. Needed to replace my very complicated hot water heater system that also serve as hvac for heat and a/c, due to water leak. Its useful life was just up. I decided to go with Allstate Mechanical after seeing recommendations on a local mom's group Facebook post for plumber recommendations instead of going with my building's recommended plumber and I am so glad I did. Jimmy was quick in responding to my online quote request. He was upfront and honest. Gave a quote and stuck to it. He was at the job with his team from beginning to end. No additional costs along the way. I highly recommend Jimmy and his team for anyone's plumbing needs!

I had Alive Plumbing come out to fix my plumbing and they were fabulous. They are so friendly and nice and when they work they keep their area clean, which I love. They do such fantastic work that I will always call them to come and fix any plumbing problems that I have.

Unless your issue is urgent it may be a wait to get a visit from Jimmy.  He always pulls through when in need and never has to come back to take another look. One visit and your problem is fixed. Thank you!!

Very, very pleased with the service I received today. The faucet in my shower stopped working last night (the handle turned and turned but no water came out). I called several plumbers beginning at 8:00 am this morning. Guarini Plumbing answered my call and the receptionist was professional and pleasant. She explained the rates to me and spoke to a supervisor to see if they could fit me in today. I was told a plumber could be here between 9:00. am and noon, so I took the appointment. The plumber called my cell phone at 9:45 to confirm my address and let me know that he would be here in about half an hour. The two plumbers who came to my house were pleasant and professional. They quickly figured out what was wrong with my faucet, turned off the water in my building, got the part from their truck, got the faucet reassembled and working and the water back on within 35 minutes of arriving. They charged exactly what I was told they would charge when I called this morning. I will not hesitate to use them again and will recommend them to my friends and neighbors.

Mike came exactly when he said he would. I was having issues with sustained hot water/ water pressure. Mike explained exactly what he thought the problem was, how he would go about fixing it, and recommended a few other ways to improve the efficiency of our heater/burner (instead of just saying I needed it and charging me accordingly). I highly recommend MD plumbing and definitely will be call back to get his recommendations.

John was referred to me by an engineer that I've been working with to clear my violation. He was a very nice guy, did all the necessary things that he said he would do, very informative and he gave me lots of good advice. I would definitely call him again if I ever have a plumbing issue.

I needed a new water heater after sandy and Bill came over to install it. Professional, neat work and I've never had a problem with it since, he did the job right. Some plumbers in the past have done poor work that starts to leak months later, but I've never had s problem with bill and will continue to recommend him to friends and family

Has been my go to plumber since I've purchased my house. Was able to fix old, rotten pipes in less than an hour and came back the same week to work on a much larger issue, replacing pipes and tub drain with very limited space. His prices are competitive and he's always looking for ways to save me money.

This company seemed like they were good and very pleasent on the phone but then after coming a day later than expected the plumber lied about the time he spent at my house and totally ripped me off. I should have made them write it down when arriving and leaving but instead I stupidly trusted them. I also don't believe that they didn't go for lunch for an hour while getting the part. I will never use them again!
