Mike was the name of the technician who came to my home to inspect my HVAC unit on the house I had just purchased.  He was the second HVAC guy out because the first guy quoted me an outrageous price to get standard maintenance up-to-date.  I was very happy with how thorough Mike was in his inspection.  He essentially found four things wrong:

1.  Coils needed to be cleaned (part of the visit)
2.  Fuses were the wrong size
3.  Condensation hose was unhooked (ended up it was also clogged)
4.  Thermostat was pretty old.

It should be noted that the previous HVAC guy who was out didn't even catch that the fuses were the wrong size and that the condensation hose was unhooked.  The previous HVAC guy tried to tell me that the unit was a 2002 unit, and I verified through Mike and through the guy who did my home inspection prior to me purchasing it that it was, indeed, a 2009 unit.

Now I don't think the thermostat needed to be replaced, but he offered to do all of the above for $383.  I agreed, and off to work he went.

I am a due diligence kind of guy, so while Mike was working, I did some research on what all of that actually cost.  First of all, I should note that regardless, I was going to pay $85 to have the semi-annual inspection done.  So here is an itemized breakdown:

1.  New fuses     $8      (Lowes)
2.  Thermostat:   $179  (Amazon)
3.  Tax:                $16
4.  Service visit:  $85
    Total              $288

The way I look at it, I essentially paid him a $95 labor fee to install a thermostat, and I'm completely okay with that.  It would probably take me 4-6 hours to do all of the above.  His total visit was about two hours.

As a side note, I think it's pretty awesome that I can change my thermostat on my phone from pretty much anywhere in the world.  

I should also note that Mike was pretty awesome.  He took the time to explain everything to me as well as he could.  I think that in his line of work, which is extremely technical in nature, one of the hardest parts is understanding pricing in such a way so that it can be explained fluently to customers, and he excelled at that.  He also pointed out a couple of other products that the folks at Hays stand behind without offering any pressure to make a purchase.  I'm pretty sure that Mike ended up getting off about 30 minutes after the time his shift was supposed to end, and he had a long drive through traffic to get home.  Those kinds of things annoy the crap out of me when I have to deal with them, but he shrugged them off with a just doing my job attitude.  I think Mike really likes what he does for a living, and I admire that.

I will also be calling Hays next fall to do my semi-annual inspection.  I highly recommend them.

Buyer beware! Most of the good reviews are for maintenance, not installations. I made the mistake of contracting with this company for a new system. After it was installed, it made an extremely annoying sound and when I complained, their attitude was basically it is what it is, sucks to be you. They tried to convince me that I was hearing the sound because of the placement of the unit. Oddly enough, my old unit was in the same place and didn't continuously make noises that set my teeth on edge. Instead of trying to come up with a solution (maybe some kind of insulation?) the tech they sent out stayed less than 5 minutes and took off. Now I'm out thousands of dollars and stuck with something that's worse than what it replaced.

I had amended my review (having originally rated this company with one star) to three stars; however, I am now back to rating it with one star.  I wish this were not so.  Despite the owner's initial attempts to make right the wrongs of his company, my 2 year-old Ruud 50 gal electric water heater is still malfunctioning.  I cannot get through one shower without losing hot water.  Both elements have been changed out, so I am guessing it is the anode (spelling?).  I have called the owner (who gave me his cell phone and said to call him anytime and he would make things right; however, he is not returning my phone calls.  I am willing to pay for the replacement of the anode (not covered under warranty) and have made this clear; however, he still is not calling me back.  I have now scheduled an appointment with another plumbing to finally get my water heater working. It seems ludicrous to me that a device as simple as a water heater can't be diagnosed correctly and repaired easily--again, this is a 2 year unit (with an 8-10 year parts warranty--how hard can it be?) i am confident the new plumber will identify and fix the problem.  I have no idea what the problem is with this contractor.  I have used his company before with no issue.   I guess it boils down to if there are no problems, the company is fine to work with.  But if there is something out of the ordinary or some incompetent worker coming to your home, you are simply out of luck, no matter what assurances the owner makes.  I am actually dumbfounded as this kind of treatment is new to me.  It is most unfortunate for everybody.

The paragraph below was my ORIGINAL review of this company (roughly around 2-4-20).  I then rated this company with ONE star.  If you read this previously, you might have noticed changed my rating to three stars because the owner of the company, subsequent to my leaving original review (don't think he had read it yet though) called me and said he would make it right with me (which he did by next morning replacing both elements for free) AND promised to make management and other changes so that this type of thing does not happen in the future to others. HOWEVER, because my water heater is still not working correctly and because he owner will not now call me back (even though I told him I would be happy to pay to have anode replaced).

I am leaving my original review below so that anyone reading this review has the entire story, from then to now anyway.  

ORIGINAL REVIEW :  purchased a new 50 gal. Ruud Water heater with 8-10 year full warranty parts (no proration) for $850 from this company on 12-23-17. Water heater wasn't putting out enough hot water for one shower. I knew heating element must be bad. Called Kooline (who sold me this unit 2 years ago) and they sent out someone (who was so incompetent, I can't even call him a plumber), who ultimately and finally checked the heating elements and determined one was bad. Said an estimate of repairs was in my email by the owner of the company. He waited at the door while I checked my email. Received an estimate for a complete rebuilt of the water heater for $750.00. I called the owner and spoke with him (Jay). I said WHAT? i have a bad element and the part is covered under warranty and you want to charge me $750.00 What? He said well, in cases like this we recommend a complete overhaul of your water heater, or words to that effect. I said this water heater is only two years old and I could buy a brand new water heater for roughly the same amount--why would I pay $750 because I had a bad element?. He kept insisting that was the charge. And then finally asked what do you think is fair? I don't know why he would ask me that but I said $175 should be more than fair for labor to change an element. He said well, I couldn't do that. I said, fine, I do not wish to do business with you.  This is a total rip-off., I will leave the appropriate bad review for your company. I then called Ruud and they agreed that this was highway robbery and I should never do business with this company again. I was also told that this job shouldn't ever cost more than $150, if that (labor cost only as part is covered).    Ruud is sending me the part for free and said it is easy to change out myself.  Ruud is sending me the part for free and said it is easy to change out myself and it wouldn't void warranty. That is what I will do.  Proceed with great caution or better yet, avoid this company at all costs.

Tech was awesome and therefore will go unnamed. Management policies corporate etc - 5 stars. So they hook you in with a free estimate then when they don't have your parts or any other parts on the truck that work ( aftermarket would have been fine) they soak you for  an extra $75 to $150 for them to drive and get parts instead of just finding something that works 2 miles away. Complete scam started out amazing ended up a disaster.

WOW!!!!! That's the first thing that come to mind watching nick santee work replacing my water heater. The guy knows what he's doing and his customer service was top notch. He should be the definition of hard work and trustworthy. Also how fast he got out to my house and you can tell he was eager to get my water up and running in a timely matter and he does it right the first time around.

Nick I hope your boss sees this and realize you were definitely the right person for the job!!

I was having a tough time finding someone to fix my Midea Air-handler, as it is not a common brand of A/C.  When I called 1800Plumber+Air, Ben answered the phone and listened to exactly what the issue was- he took down the model of my unit and actually talked through the repairs with his tech before sending him out.  The other companies I called (Goettl and George Brazil)just have an answering service and they do not relay any important info to their techs, thus having them show up only to say they could not fix it or find parts.  
Ben listened to my issues and the awful experiences i had at the other places and said he would take care of it for me and that the tech he was sending, Travis - was the best.  Travis showed up and quickly fixed my A/C (needed a new control board) and only charged me half of what the others said a new board would cost if they could find one to fit my unit.  I will never call anyone else again but these guys for plumbing and A/C!!!

got their tune-up special mid June, thought we had the air go out about 6 weeks later, so we call precision back up, they can't be out for 48 hours..not gonna work. Call another company they come right out and tell us AC is great, the drain was clogged  so the unit shut off as a safety feature and you need a P trap on the drain. But wait Precision Air and their super tune up were just done, they didn't recommend a P trap (they did recommend a $300 dollar start-up motor??). I called Precision air spoke with John in customer service, after explaining the situation he agreed that it appeared that the tech Paul had not flushed the drain or he would have recommended a P trap, and that he didn't even have the correct information on the type of unit put in their system,  so he agreed to refund my money back to my credit card, it has been 3 weeks and no such refund has been made to my card, I have left messages for John and he has not returned my calls.

I consider myself a fairly savvy consumer, but I found myself suckered by Goettl commercials.  Ken Goodrich sounds so sincere when talking about the history of the company, his dog, and his approach to providing high levels of service.  As a result, I hired Goettl to perform an $80 rejuvenation on my air conditioning unit.  

While the technician appeared professional and knowledgeable,  he told me that there was a small leak in my coils, that the fan motor was pulling high amperage, and that rust on my unit.  He also told me that I was probably 2-3 gallons of coolant low, and that replacing it would cost around $105 per pound. He indicated he would be happy to replace the coolant and finish the cleaning the unit, but he thought it might be a waste of money.  He indicated while it didn't affect him one way or the other, he suggested I might want to think about replacing the entire unit (only 8 yrs. old).  

Not being an expert in HVAC, I took his recommendation, and contacted their field supervisor so as to get a quote on replacing the unit.  The sales person came out the next day, and provided me with a quote for $15,000, which he indicated included discounts.  I thanked him and asked him to please send me a copy of the quote with all of the relevant information.  I also asked him to send me a copy of the initial report, regarding the overall condition of my unit.  I did not receive a copy of either.  I contacted the supervisor, and again asked for a copy of both documents.  I only received a copy of the replacement cost.  I contacted him again, requesting for a copy of the initial assessment, which I never did receive.  

Due to the cost of replacing the unit, I wanted to get a couple of quotes from different companies.  I contacted AC by J, another local company.  They sent out their sales person.  Based on my feedback, he did a quick analysis and provided me with a quote.  He quoted me a higher grade unit, with a longer warranty for 25% less than the Goettl quote.  He could tell I was still unsure about the need to replace the unit, so he offered to send out one of their technicians (at no cost) to complete another analysis of the unit, to ensure I really needed a new unit.   The technician was on the roof for about an hour, and when he came down, he indicated that in his professional opinion, there was no leak or need to replace the unit.  While he did indicate it needed a couple of pounds of coolant, their price was $65.00 per pound.  

Needless to say, I was thrilled with saving thousands of dollars not having to replace my air conditioning unit.  I am very disappointed with my experience with Goettl.    I only hope others do not fall for Ken Goodrich's commercials.  I would not and will not recommend Goettl to anyone who asks for a referral.  I will recommend AC by J.

I use Christian brothers for everything plumbing, heating, AC, they installed a tankless water heater a couple years ago now.  I had a massive job they tackled years ago now when the plumbing collapsed under my house.  Water wouldn't drain anywhere.  I called other companies, waited 4 days without water and they didn't show.  When I called said other company after the no show they wanted to charge me emergency fees after I waited 4 days.  I called Christian brothers in a panic and explained the situation.  They had the plumber come that night even though they were working on overtime.  They didn't charge me an emergency fee or anything.  That is why I chose them for everything.

This company was the warranty company my landlord had called for the home that I am renting. The technician that came out was great. He was there for most of the day on a holiday Monday, July 4th,  and he seemed very knowledgeable he was very courteous, very nice, and he explained everything that needed to be done to try and fix the leak. He said that somebody was going to come out the next morning and finish repairing it but it wouldn't be him because he didn't have the right machine. I heard him on the phone with his boss getting the schedule for the next day. So the next day I waited all morning and nobody had come yet, so about noon, I called the company and they told me that the technician should not have scheduled it because he did not know their schedule, and said they couldn't get there until Friday. I was a little bit miffed but I said OK fine, this was Tuesday. So Friday late morning I called to confirm that they would be out because nobody has shown up yet and she assured me they would be here in the afternoon between 3-5 pm, it was originally between 1-3 pm. About 4pm, I saw that I had missed a call from the company so I called them back and they tell me that the technician they had scheduled to come out doesn't have a ladder tall enough to get on my roof and that they couldn't send someone out again until the following Wednesday! That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, what A/C tech doesn't have a ladder that can get on the roof! And why would they schedule someone who wasn't equipped to come out here when they knew exactly what was going on and how tall the roof was because they'd already been out! She then told me they couldn't come out until the following Wednesday, another five days! OMG I was fuming! Maybe because it was a warranty job they didn't care if they did this job or not, I don't know what the deal was. This is just poor customer service and I hope I never have to deal with this company again.
