CTX Plumbing & Electrical Electrician
These guys showed up prompt and on time. They were friendly and quoted me on a job. They were the highest price by 40% so I went with someone else but if work reflects promptness they appear very good.  And will reach out for plumbing in future just not electrical.

Texas Star Services Electrician
I recommend Texas Star Services. I had a problem with my washing machine that the appliance repairman said was caused by my freezer drawing too much power on the same outlet and that an electrician needed to address the outlet and panel.  After checking it out, Kevin determined there was a very minor variance but wasn't enough of an issue to cause the described problem since no breakers had tripped. He recommended I bite the bullet and replace the 21-year old washer and freezer.
Update:  I lowered the rating from 5 stars to 4 because I called the electrician to update the panel to handle the washer and freezer; his answer that they weren't energy efficient may have been true, but buying new appliances is a decision I should be able to make with an estimate in hand for the electrical work. The washer repair guy came out one more time to get the washer working again, but now I just have an unplugged freezer.

Paschal Air, Plumbing & Electric Electrician
I had a faucet that needed to be installed in my kitchen sink. I purchased the high-end faucet, soap dispenser and hole covers (I have a 4 hole sink but just 2 appliances to install). James came out and gave me a quote - he was very professional and friendly. The staff at the office was very communicative and friendly as well. I hired James to do the job and couldn't be happier. The price was competitive, the work was completed in a timely manner and looks great! He cleaned up all the mess (some that wasn't even his!) and left my kitchen looking great. I would definitely recommend Paschal Air and will use them again in the future. Thanks, James and Pascal Air for a job well done!

He left with no mess to clean too. :) I will be using his services going forward.

Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric Electrician
Mario flat out lied saying only option was to get a whole new unit..when coils could have been replaced. He, also said outside unit had a pinhole leak when it did not. He also told us we need 6-7 pounds of refrigerant when we only needed 2. I would not recommend them he wax here about 10 mins and said only option is new unit on-site and out for 6500-15000 . I told him we would look into it. I had my home warranty company come out. He said yoh might have  leak in the could but nothing substantial.. You only needed 2 lbs of refrigerant ..no leak on outside unit.. AC works great... Do not use these guys unless you're willing to be lied to and robbed.. ROGER the GM defended Mario and his lies..so even though Mario lied be didn't care!!!

Milestone Electrician
A very nice man named Kyle arrived, the one star is simply because he arrived same day and was courteous. Then he wanted me to sign saying I agreed to pay over $500 for a minor repair. He said if it doesn't take him that long he would knock the price down -- but for him to work on it I had to sign this $500 paper first. What? This is ridiculous! I told him that he was very nice but that his companies protocol lost my business. If I'm not going to have to pay $500 in the end, why make me sign saying I'm willing to? Unless, they are just going to keep finding problems. I found the whole procedure reeked of scam and asked them to leave.

A #1 Air Electrician
Everything started out well.

Communication and scheduling were excellent.

Danny the technician came out to inspect our 11 yr old, 5 ton Trane AC unit that had summarily ceased working.  After inspecting inside and out, he told us that our system was basically shot, the outdoor unit wasn't working properly and probably caused the circuit board to on the attic unit to 'fry' and also our blower motor in the attic was toast, and spewing oil everywhere.

He provided a quick tally of the needed repairs, which totaled roughly $4000 for parts & labor, or about half-way to a brand new system.

OK.  Have the sales guy come out and provide a quote for a new system.  Sales guy comes out, after 45 minutes produces a quote for $10,000 for a new system with installation.  But there is a 60 month, 0% interest deal available.  Seems a little high, and very much lacking in itemization, but it's a solution

I do some investigation on the web.  I learn that one should expect bids to be something like cost + 40% margin.  Sounds reasonable.

Industry professionals suggest that HVAC contractors win about 1 bid out of 5, and interestingly, the ratio of wins/bid doesn't really change whether they quote cost plus 40%, cost plus 20% or cost plus 100%.  So, unsurprisingly, HVAC contractors can make the same amount of $ for half the work; or twice as much per job by simply inflating the cost, especially when it starts getting hot.  BTW,

The retail price (not 'cost;) for a 5 ton unit with gas heater is around $5000-6000, so a $10,000 quote  seems like a pretty fat margin, much more than 40%.  I planned to get 3-4 quotes.

Here's the funny part.  On Saturday morning I get a call from A#1 customer satisfaction survey people and I tell them that I was very satisfied with the tech who came out.  No sooner do I hang up, and my wife tells me her brother is in town from South Texas over the weekend and he's a certified HVAC guy.  He offers to take a look and do a sanity check for us.

Turns out that there's a blown fuse up in the attic system.  He replaces the fuse.  He checks the thermostat, not working.  He replaces the thermostat.  Guess what?  The system is now fully operational after $60 parts, 3 hours of work by a trained tech, including travel to the hardware store.

So, the system could've been made operational for less than $400, as opposed to $4000, or $10,000.

I, of course, realize that this is a band aid solution and not the same as replacing all of the old components, or replacing the whole system.  And I acknowledge that the old system components are wearing out and will need to be replaced in the foreseeable future.

But still, it does leave one with an uneasy feeling that a trained expert told me all about the big expensive things that were wrong and somehow failed to either mention, or realize, that a simple fuse and thermostat would get things running again.  For this, I rate my experience 2 stars.

I hired Hiho Handyman for painting, flooring and lighting in my kitchen and bathroom and was very satisfied.  They exceeded my expectations in every way and cleaned up after they were finished.    This is an honest, five star company.  I will definitely use them again and recommend them to my friends.
