I had used Calhoun before at my previous house and they had done an ok job. Maybe cost a bit much, but ok. As a handyman I only really call a plumber for when it gets bad. Well, my new place has 40 year old plumbing and has started to get some pinhole leaks in the copper pipes. Long story short, they found a leak after six days, they fixed what they thought the leak was, didn't bother checking to find the SECOND leak right below it, then upcharged me 300-400% for parts I didn't get an estimate for.
Longer version:
- Saw slow leak coming from ceiling, called Calhoun Friday, they couldn't come out until Monday.
- Monday comes, guy opens up ceiling more (it was already partially open at that point. Can't find the leak, says it's in the wall upstairs and he'll have to come back Thursday to look for it (six days after original call). I asked that he calls before coming Thursday since I have work meetings.
- Thursday comes, they don't call and show up in the middle of a work meeting, so I am distracted and can't watch or ask questions.
- About an hour and a half later, the guy says they're done. He put the toilet back on for whatever reason (I need to take that off to fix the wall, so why would you put it back on?). I write a check for what I assumed was mostly labor, since it was just a few small parts and there were two guys here.
- Later, I get an itemized receipt, and notice how high the parts cost seems, and how much extra I was billed for (new closet bolts for the toilet, even though that toilet was installed just last year and the bolts should have been fine. New caps. Sharkbite connections instead of soldered copper replacements). I call, and lady on phone gives me some stupid excuse for that being the set price because they get it from a supplier.
- I hadn't touched the bathroom to this point since I wasn't looking forward to the drywall/tile repair, not to mention taking out the toilet they put back in without checking with me. So I just now notice that a second elbow is leaking still. So they didn't actually fix the whole problem?
So $466.63 later, I have two giant holes and a huge mess to clean up, and my pipes are still leaking. But at least I have a professionally installed toilet? Give me a break... Next time I'll just shut off the water in my house and wait for a different company.
Oh, and due to their 4% mandatory fee for paying by card, I payed by check, so I can't even dispute it.
