I wish I could give Heise's the 5-star treatment, but there's room for improvement. First, ask for Dave. He's the best and I would personally give him 5 stars. Second, Heise's always come on time and Third, they are usually pretty quick with appointments-both time of visit and time between making appointment/getting a plumber.
I'm one of those long-time tenants who can't get a repair from my landlord to save my life. Before the current landlord started hiring a cousin of a friend of someone three more times removed-and daresay NOT a plumber, Heise's were the plumbers always used at my building.
NOT a plumber needs several visits to fix anything, only comes on weekend mornings or evenings, replaces anything/everything with the cheapest semi-functional replacement, may need to borrow tools from me (huh?), may cause a new leak (cuz not enough time to correctly seat a new pipe-really?) and always leaves a mess of grease and water all over the floor (ok, he might ask for paper towel, but will do a 1/2 arse job of cleaning). After more than 3 attempts on his part to fix my issues, I decided it was time to call Heise's.
The woman who answers the phones needs a new job. It's just that simple. I had to deal with her on more than one occasion (so not just one bad day for her) and if I didn't know anything else about Heise's, I would have hung up. Maybe she's Mrs. Heise?
I talked to Dave on the phone and we made an appointment-about 3 day wait, at most. This was ok, since my issues were not quite an emergency after all this time. I had a toilet that ran almost nonstop along with the typical phantom flushing. I had terribly low hot water pressure in my shower. I had a leak on/under a loose new (cheap) cold faucet in the bathroom sink.
An appointment was made and the plumber (who I thought was Dave) came on the right day exactly on time. Wow, that's cool-on time. So Dave #1 addressed all 3 issues almost simultaneously. Toilet-new flapper-explained if doesn't help, means I need a new toilet (not surprising due to age of the toilet). Bathroom sink-a few quick readjustments and the leak was gone and the faucet hardware was fixed for now (explained this problem would probably return due to cheap hardware put on by NOT a plumber).
The tub was more of a problem. Previously NOT a plumber had changed a washer, left grease all over the bathroom floor and the water pressure was worse after his visit (Oy!). Heise's plumber (Dave #1) said I needed a whole new faucet but he didn't have the time or the materials and I'd need a new appointment for this job. Since the other two problems took less than 10 minutes, this didn't seem too professional, but I said ok. Fast forward and another call to Dave. An appointment was made and Heise plumber (Dave #2) comes. Dave #2 insists the diagnosis by Dave #1 was incorrect and that there's something in the building which meant he couldn't fix it. I insisted that hot water flow is never normal-he chalked the problem (with water pressure) to issues throughout the building. I tried to find out what, but some secret plumber oath-no explanation outside of a couple speculations. He was in/out in 10 minutes, removed something from the shower head and when I asked how would this help water pressure from pipe-he said, it just does. After he left, I looked it up and guess what? It's called a flow restrictor-oh, that makes sense. I guess it takes too long to explain this to someone (yes, a woman-hmm). Dave called me about the bill and I let loose with my frustration. He will personally come (for real!) to figure this out once and for all.
Dave comes on time (I'm still blown away by this due to all my interactions with NOT a plumber) and he ascertains I need a new washer on the hot water faucet of the tub. He quickly changes it. Dave apologizes for previous guys (note: 2nd guy, with condescension and a bit of laziness in excess -name is Mark-not so sure I'd recommend him), tells me he'll talk to them and he gives me a good deal on the bill.
When I asked Dave if he had any suggestions on how to get my leaky radiator fixed, he took a quick look. He explains to me how to possibly fix for the short and long-term (uh, need to call whoever works on boiler in the building). So 3 plumbers later, I can now wash my hair in the shower again!
To give Heise's a 5-star: get a new receptionist, tell me the name of the plumber who's coming to my apt. and be sure the Heise's plumbers have the following characteristics: friendly, competent and not lazy (c'mon 3 trips to change a washer???)
As I said in the beginning, ask for Dave- try to get him or at the very least get the name of the plumber in advance. Ignore the attitude from the receptionist
