I was very disappointed due to their astonishingly high prices, after you commit to their service call.

I just needed a tub faucet leak fixed - replacing washers.  I was quoted $450 from their book, which I thought was amazingly expensive.  I called a competitor figuring maybe I just don't know current prices.  The competitor did a great job - cleaned stems, replaced washers, and repacked stems - all for about 30% of what A-1 quoted me.

The technician did not know what he was doing. Charged us $825 and the problem is still not fixed. Office manager is incredibly rude and disrespectful. Do not use this company unless you want to spend a lot of money for poor service and to not have your problem fixed. Do not recommend.

I had an appointment scheduled for Friday afternoon to take care of a plumbing leak that required water to be shut off to the entire house until repaired. Checked in with company at 3:30 to make sure things were still on track, they couldn't tell me when someone would be there, just that I was still on the schedule. At 4:45 I get a call saying they weren't going to be able to make it, but could PROBABLY get to me on Monday! I had an appointment, if you couldn't handle my request, tell me so and I'll go with another company. Now it's too late to get someone else out and I'm without water for the entire weekend. Do NOT call this company, they actually hung up on me when I was upset that they overscheduled and left me in a bad place.

A-1 came out to our house, and repaired our garbage disposal in record time! I was so relieved as I was having a party that night, and freaking out I wouldn't be able to use it and that guests would smell it. Thank the lord they were done before anyone arrived. I'll use them again.

Don't bother.  Called for a plumbing issue and took the day off work.  Mid day when the plumber was supposed to show I got a call the he had called out sick.  Sick I understand, what puzzles me is why they waited half a day when it was too late to get another company to come fix my problem.

This company is very unprofessional. Waited the four hour window that was given only for them not to show up or fix problem. I had to call them to see how long it would be. They sent the plumber to another job without calling me. Would be another week before they could come. For this reason the do not deserve any stars.

I called because of a leaking water heater. I called 264-9670 and the receptionist told me because I lived in Hampton she would forward my info to the Newport News office and they would call me. Meanwhile  4 hours went by and I was still waiting on a phone call so I called the 264-9670 and the lady provided me with the Newport News phone number. I called Them and was told they never received my information and I was not on the list for a service call. I was at this point irritated. She reentered my information and told me I would be contacted. The technician came about 2 hours after that but I just wanted to get my water heater fixed so I was ok with the 6 hour wait. But the icing on the cake was when the technician took maybe 5 minutes (without any research) to tell me it would be 2800.00 to fix my water heater.  I was furious. My water heater is still under warranty but he did not take the time to see the date on the front label. I gave him the 78.00 fee (the quickest and easiest 78.00 someone could make) but there was no discount for the careless receptionist not forwarding my info and it was too late in the day to call anyone else. I'm completely disappointed with every aspect of dealing with this company and I warn you to keep your 78.00 in your pocket and look elsewhere for a plumber.

I called the company to have them come out and look at my water heater, which was not producing any hot water. This is the first time I've called A1 American, because I was in a pinch to get the water heater fixed for a tenant.  When the two technicians came out, they asked me right away if I wanted to go ahead and replace the water heater, without even diagnosing the problem first. They proceeded to look at the water heater for a couple of minutes, and then come back and say that in fact I needed new water heater to the tune of $1600. I told him I wasn't going to have them replace the water heater. A couple of days later, I finally was able to get my regular plumber out to the house to take a look at the water heater. He diagnosed the problem right away as a faulty thermostat. I now have a perfectly fine water heater again. I will never call A1 American again.

We called A1 American to repair our AC system we were previous customers. The tech who came to our home stated that the power pack needed replaced and that the board blew when he was in the attic with the unit. He stated that our AC was too old to repair and charged us 596.13 and quoted me almost $11,000.00 to replace my unit. He left my house with my wiring exposed, my thermostat off the wall wires hanging and my house 92 degrees not repaired! I called another company and this man a truly qualified HVAC Master Tech stated that my unit does not have a power pack and the board had not been replaced he showed my my original parts and found the problem to be on the outside unit he had it fixed in 1 hour and charged me half of what A1 American charged me. THIS COMPANY IS A SALES COMPANY NOT A REPAIR COMPANY! I AM CONTACTING BBB & DPOR they have a laundry list of justified settled complaints and injustices! THEY ARE CROOKS! Side note we are Retired Military and their Rewards for Military Families is Robbery!!!

This company did nothing in terms of good business ethics or practice when they responded to our call for a constantly running toilet.  Not only were they ill-equipped, the technician had to make a run to Lowes to pick up an internal piece I could have purchased for $15. When I receive my $250 service bill, I wondered what it was for. my service tech had departed and left the toilet still disassembled. We made a call to the management, and was told that he would work on it. This never happened. Fast forward six months, we inquired about a warranty for the work that was done. We were told that a complete tank rebuild would only be warranty for 60 days, Although in the failed after five months. They would not even send a service tech to look at the work.  I do not recommend them, and would never use them again.

I'm only comfortable with this one star because I was told the technician was very nice. However, my tenant had a very slow draining kitchen sink, which we snaked several times so we knew it had to be something different than a clog. When I called, they were very quick to schedule, which was great, but they neglected to let me know what I would be billed for or that I'd be required to pay at the time of service. I confirmed the phone number and the appointment and went about my day.

Flash forward to appointment day: They called my parent's home phone number- where I don't even live- to let my mom know they were on the way for the appointment. I never provided their number, only the address to make my house easier to find (it is next door).  Luckily my mom was there so she walked them to the house.

The technician was there for about an hour and said they thought the pipe fitting was the wrong size. Those pipes are original to the house and have worked perfect. They were willing to come back out to replace it for close to $700.00.... did you catch that?? $700.00!!

Then after not even fixing the issue, they promptly billed my mom for $223.50. Ridiculous! They charged me for their drive to Williamsburg, which they advertise servicing, and incorrectly assessed the problem. I had another plumber come out to fix the actual problem, he was there for 1/2 a day and only charged $160.00.

There were all kinds of things wrong with this situation and I hope anybody reading this really takes caution, should they still decide to go with A-1.

I am embarrassed to have to admit that I made such a costly mistake.  I was charged $1200.00 to have a part changed (literally took 5 minutes) behind the shower panel (there was a small leak) and to have the bathroom sink unclogged.  Very foolishly, I paid up front as they require because the technician made the job sound more elaborate. To top it off, when I asked to see his plumbers license he told me he was not allowed to carry one.  But to rest assured that the company provides training.  Um...that means he had no license.  
I'm sure this company relies on fools like me who just want the job done (I worried the leak would worsen) and not on repeat clients.  
I really can't believe this company is in business .  I'm sure many of us are subconsciously suckered into calling because they appeal to our sense of patriotism (American flag etc..)
The word has got to be spread that they are really taking advantage of people.  I easily overpaid by at least $800.00.  No summer vacation this year.  Thanks a lot A1 American...

Worst company ever for HVAC. We called them to replace our HVAC system. They sent a sub-contractor named, William, who was so rude, and spent 4 days to swap out HVAC systems(he was only here a total of 4 & 1/2 hours in those 4 days so should of been a half days job). When he was done he said we owed 800.00 dollars more cause he installed a different unit than he quoted and when we asked questions he said we were waiting his time.  Of course the AC isn't working correctly...it won't cut off after reaching the set temperature,so we called company who sent another guy out who said he doesn't like working behind someone and doesn't know what the problem is .... he came out a second time and still doesn't know what's wrong and keeps telling us he'll talk to his boss and call us back and doesn't call (He said . Two months and 7000.00 dollars later Nobody is fixing whatever is wrong with this NEW HVAC system and the second guy said he didn't want to deal with this he needed to go where he could make money; seriously after your company got our 7 thousand dollars you don't wanna deal with us. Horrible Company! Horrible Service!! Horrible experience!!!

Customer service. One word, terrible. I had a question that I guess drives a technician to come out to answer. If the answer was no I can't do it I still had to pay?

All I wanted to know, I I could move my water heater into the garage and get a quote to do so... I am very disappointed. They have several commercials that made me think they were the perfect fit.

Terrible. Non-refundable $75 fee to come look at my toilets (4 years old). The guy reeking of cigarettes with his apprentice (his son) tells me there are no replacement parts available and recommends replacing all  four toilets with $900 models (each).  I told him that was not a good option, so he demanded his $75 and left. House stunk for two days. They are not A1 and need to take America out of their name. I've had much better services in 3rd would countries.

Who said best of best???  More like worst of the worst!!!  Hugely overpriced, didn't know what they were doing, lacked basic diagnostic equipment, no parts carried on truck, tried to talk us into thousands of dollars of work and when we asked for written estimate, they left in a hurry and never came back.

They charged me $150 to give a $900 quote.  I didn't get them to do the work, but I got another company the same day, and the total job was $380.  Don't use them, they are extremely overpriced.

Do not use this company! They have fraudulent practices. Contacted them because our ac unit stopped working. They came out, said the motor was bad and charged us $1300 for parts and labor. Then 2 weeks later, the same problem resurfaced. Called them back out, then they said we needed to purchase a whole new unit and the cost would be $5900. I contacted the manager and requested we be credited for the original work that clearly didn't fix the problem. She lied and said the cost we were quoted included a credit because a new unit cost $9800. I looked online and the same unit costs $1500. Stay clear of this company...they just want to rip you off.

The good- Leak in my master bath drain is fixed. The plumber was nice and professional.

The bad- $689 for two hours of work, reset upstairs drain and sealed shower faucet, with the only materials used being sealant - seems outrageous. That's almost $350 an hour. I've had entire bathrooms re-plumbed for similar cost. The pay per job vs by the hour didn't work out so well for me. Honestly feel taken advantage of. I'm a woman, who just moved into a new place when the leak started, didn't have many options at the time to get it fixed.

I called them a while back the tech was nice, however their management charged me the total call fee even though he was there for about two or more minutes before we found out the issue needed no intervention in his behalf. Don't get me wrong I know gas cost and their time is valuable but charging a full rate for the service call that was two minutes, five tops was a little much. The tech felt so bad but I told him it was ok they just lost a customer because I would never use them again.

AVOID AVOID AVOID A-1 AMERICAN!!!

Our one day job took two weeks due to multiple no shows by the plumber they sent out.  He arrived to replace our main sewer line and had no tools to do the job.  He needed to borrow my shovel.  He would work 3 hours top a day, would say he was leaving and be right back and would not.  We called him one day multiple times to ask if he was coming back and he told us yes, but never showed.  Then he just stopped showing up all together.  We called the main office and they had no idea he had not completed the job.  They did send out two guys to finish the job.  My property was left a mess and not once did they offer me anything for the poor service we received.  I absolutely will not use them and strongly advise anyone who needs plumbing done, to AVOID A-1 AMERICAN!!!

Called on Thursday, set appointment for Friday and the problem was fixed quickly.  The Tech Darrell was very good, Great Customer Service Darrell keep up the Great Job. I hope I won't ever need you again ;o) but if I do I will call A-1 American.

I had a pipe leaking down through my kitchen.  I called at 10 AM yesterday, as they advertise having 24/7 service.  It has been well over 24 hours and I have yet to have anyone come to my house.  I even called back to follow up and still nothing.  Very disappointed.
