HISTORY

Established in 1988.
K&S Heating and Air Conditioning opened in October of 1988 with just 8 employees. Thanks to much hard work and the support of the Rochester community, K&S has grown to employ 60 plus people. In the early days we seldom left the Rochester city limits, but now our sales and service personnel travel into northern Iowa, western Wisconsin, the Twin Cities suburbs, and most of south central and south eastern Minnesota. Our product mix has grown as well. Traditional furnace and air conditioning home comfort products from Lennox and Carrier is how we built the business, but now we feature geothermal, solar, heat pumps, dual fuel, in floor heat, and hybrid heat products as well. In addition, K&S offers indoor air quality testing and products, humidification and de-humidification equipment, whole home air filtration, duct cleaning, as well as radon testing and mitigation.

Very concerned about technician's knowledge and honesty.  Called for service.  Was told I had cracked or plugged heat exchanger.  He looked at my furnace literature and never mentioned that heat exchanger was under warranty.  He called estimator for new furnace information.  Long story short, I looked at furnace information after service person and estimator left.  My heat exchanger was still under warranty.  I called original installer.  He sent out service person, at no charge.  It was Saturday.  No cracked or plugged heat exchanger but weak sensor.  I feel they were looking for sale and taking advantage of woman concerned about heat for home.

we have loved k&s for years...literally 40 yrs!  our latest experience, however, has totally changed that.  the work done was very good; the communications was non-existent...even after sending a letter hoping to alleviate our concerns.  k&s no more!

We hired them to put in a new bathtub and tub surround, now it's leaking all over the basement. If they come and look at it they are going to charge over $200 even though it was their shotty work. We also hired them to install a bathroom exhaust fan. First when the guy gets out here he tries to beg to get out of the job due to a family emergency then when they install it he cut the hole too big  they say they don't repair sheet rock so they won't fix that either. Then on top of all of this, when they did the electrical for the exhaust fan they messed up the wiring so that now I need to have both of the switches on for the outlets to work. I recommend not using them for anything unless you absolutely have too. They are awful at what they do.

I called K&S asking for an estimate to a kitchen outlet.
Electrical guy visited. While here I liked his professionalism and so I asked for an estimate for a complete a roughed-in basement bath and bedroom (Plumbing, Heating and Electrical). I have the cash so why not? Within a day, he sent me an Electrical estimate for the kitchen outlet only and forgot all of the other electrical items. So I asked again and he sent the rest of the items moments later.

Things were looking good.

Plumbing guy (Dave) had to be asked twice to contact me, then he forgot our appointment and stood me up. We rescheduled, then he visited. Very polite. Days later I asked if the estimate was ready yet? He initially stopped responding to text messages and I had only received a voicemail of him flushing the toilet and talking to himself. He finally sent the estimate 5 days later, only after I reminded him via email. Then discovered he had forgotten two important parts: a new Sump Pump & fix a leaky pipe.  His answer to that was that the missing items would be time and materials. That's just code for I don't want your business.

I'll spend my cash elsewhere.

Horrible customer service. They showed up late only to tell us to call our gas company and then charged us $100. I called and spoke with the secretary to see if we could be refunded since it was our first time calling them and they just installed a brand new furnace in our home last August which is still under warranty. The secretary said she would refund us and when I called 2 weeks later because we hadn't received our money back the manager informed me he would not be refunding us. Poor communication. Im not impressed with this company.

K and s has really gone downhill. I needed new furnace. They had a special offer it was nothing but bait and switch.. Richard the salesman more interested in his commission than what I needed or wanted . Same with hot water heater. He told me they don't have energy efficient hot water heaters unless you want to spend 3,000-5000.00. worst plumber ever, came to my house and first thing asked if I minded if he scratched up my faucet as he had never worked with anything other than Moen. He stood and stared at it. Could not figure it out . We asked him to leave. We got a bill for 325.00 for him to do nothing!!!

In late June, I called on a Weds for A/C service.  Cindy scheduled me for the following Monday, 9-11 am.  Monday comes and I stay home from work to meet the service person.  11:30 am comes with nobody arriving and no call.  I call K&S.  Somebody besides Cindy answers, so I explain the situation.  She then put me on hold (which is fine).  Three minutes later, Cindy gets on and is immediately defensive, but finally she comes around to ask me what's the problem?  Long story short, I ask if the service person will be there by end of day.  Answer is yes.  No surprise, service never showed up and no follow up call.  That is annoying, but also that I waited in five days of heat with no A/C, and could have scheduled someone else.

If I could give 0 stars I would.  After purchasing a home with a fairly new, multi zone system furnace, I noticed that one of the dampers wasn't working well.  I called K&S and they sent someone out for repair.  They replaced one of the three damper motors on the damper system and charged $600 for this. ($400 for the part, 200 for labor).  Just for giggles I looked up the part in question and discovered it had a retail price of less than $100. I called to complain and was initially told that that was just what the part cost, then when I complained more and asked to speak to a manager, I was told that a mistake had been made, and I was charged for the wrong part. A new price of $250 for the part was offered, and though it was still more than twice the published retail price from Honeywell, I agreed to pay.  In the interim  the damper system still wasn't working properly, so I requested a service call to address that.  At that appointment I was told that I had a coolant leak, and though my unit was under warranty from K&S I would still need to pay labor of $450.  In the interest of full transparency, I was not speedy in paying the adjusted invoice, but I did pay it.  Though I had misgivings, I agreed to have the condenser replaced, as K&S was the original installer and responsible for the part.  On the specific date of install I was awakened at 715 AM (Scheduled appointment between 8-12) by someone pounding on the door and informing me that if I didin't pay the full labor charge first, they wouldn't install the warrantied part.  I paid the amount, and the technician replaced the condenser, meanwhile leaving a mess in my utility room, a vent off of the furnace, and not resealing the unit where he had opened it, resulting in cold air pouring out of the furnace rather than going through the house.  When I asked about the still unresolved damper issue, he told me that a different technician would be out to complete the job.  The next morning, K&S called to schedule that appointment and told me that i would have to pay a service charge for them to come out and look at the problem that they initially were supposed to be working on.  Needless to say, I won't be doing that. K&S's behavior and lack of consistency in workmanship bears mention.  At no time has anyone from their organization reached out for anything, except to demand payment for a job that is still incomplete.  To be fair, this company does a decent job of marketing their brand, but their execution in my case was terrible.  I believe that they are a cheaper alternative than some other options here in town, but I'm reminded of the old saying, You get what you pay for.  Except that in this case, I'm still waiting.......

Save yourself some frustration and pick another vendor.

K&S has done a number of jobs at my house through the years. They replaced my furnace and AC. They did a fine job on that.

My experience with their plumbers however has been entirely different. Avoid plumbing jobs with this company!!!  They didn't seal the connections on my water heater correctly. They tried once to fix it and made it worse. And once I noticed they didn't fix it, which was admittedly a little long, they wouldn't stand behind their work

Our furnace went out they sent out a tech ( very nice guy) we were charged after hours price of $148.50. Was not able to repair and they didn't have the part. Received call from them with an estimate was told it would be 187.50, this is more then the after hours cost.  Called them to see why and was to.d that we were given a deal ( this was not the case when I first called told after hours is 148.50 and during business hours $140.00 of course they tried to back peddle and the girl told me it is $156.00 for our truck to pull in your driveway and $148.00 per hour for labor but the tech did not charge us.  Look around because I have talked to 3 different people at this place and have been given 3 different responses. They charge differently to fit their agenda

Stay away from this company!  After 3 visits to our house in the last 6 months (and $700 in fees) we're still sitting here in the cold with snow flying and a furnace that doesn't work.  And the tech they last sent out this last time was a young guy with very little experience.

K&S has been superb in their efforts to get my furnace running, and then replaced. Ben, the technician was exceedingly professional and precise in his diagnosis of the situation. Brian has had to step in during the warranty process, due to an incompetent Home Warranty of America team, and assist me in pushing this repair through. He even called me back with vital information to save me from much heartache in the future. I recommend them insistently for heating, air, electrical and plumbing.

I called to find out why they never came out like they promised after getting my furnace and A/C put in. They said they would come out in the Spring to check on things. That never happened. They said they would contact me. It never happened. I can't recommend them as they will not come out even after I called them years later to make good on their promise. The lady I talked to said they came out and they never did. No proof of any kind. Now they say it's too late. Wow!

We now have appliances installed almost correctly.  It has taken three visits and many phone calls as well as putting up with an attitude from one of the installers, which was essentially, You're just the homeowner, you don't know anything.  But we finally have a dishwasher that works, a microwave-oven that is mounted only a little crookedly, and a countertop cooking surface that has a makeshift gasket sealing it to the counter that has a big gap right in the front where spills are nost likely to happen.  But I'm giving up.  Further calls just aren't worth it.

After a notification from RPU in April, I called K&S to come back out to check my toilets. They had been here or so ago and replaced seals on two leaky toilets and a device to help it fill properly. This visit the tech was very professional and replaced both seals noting both were leaking. He further stated one toilet needed another device,  like last time, to aid in filling and would order it that day, May 1st and replace in 1-2 days. After not hearing from them I called on May 10 to inquire on the status. The receptionist spoke to the tech and told me there was a mistake and they just ordered it and would install on May 16. I called today to confirm and request a discount due to the delay and the fact that the water continues to run. They informed me they do not give discounts. In fact, the manager got on the line and said there has been no delay, this is business as usual.  I took issue with the customer service and she said they'd give me a $20 discount. This surely does not entice me to be a repeat customer. C'mon, you can do better that that K&S.

K&S came to work on the house next door.  Their techs got stuck in the driveway and while digging out their truck, they threw a large quantity of snow on my driveway.  My driveway was cleared down to the cement.  Then, they got in their truck and drove away.  No effort at all of trying to clean up their mess.

When we called the office, the girl said to hold on.  Six minutes later she came back on the phone and said that maybe someone would be out in a couple of hours.

I guess their schedule matters but mine is of no importance.

Wonderful public relations.  I bet you can guess who I will NEVER call for business!

Very Disappointed.  Had to call for repair as our furnace was not heating.  They fixed by replacing parts - but added over 200% mark up to the cost of the parts.  Seems excessive.  After repair, we still had issues where our blower would not shut off - even thought the thermostat was set to Auto.  Call them back and was told someone would get back to me the next day.  That was almost 3 weeks ago and still waiting.  I ended up calling someone else to fix the issue.

I made an appt. with these people to unclog a slow draining bathtub. They showed up and said they don't do this work themselves and called in Drain Rite. Those folks came and busted both bolts off of the overflow faceplate. They told me I would have to call K&S to come fix that. I called them twice in the same day. The first time they said someone would be there between 1-4 p.m. The second time they promised their service manager would call me with an estimate of the work that would need to be done, because they felt it would be extensive and expensive. They never called. I called them again the next day and they, once again, promised their service manager would call me. It is now ten days later and I have not received a phone call. I called there today and told them not to bother. Oh, and FYI, I had also asked them for an estimate to install a new hot water heater for me. I canceled that request as well. NEVER again would I use their services.

AC didn't work two months after install due to faulty part. Incorrectly diagnosed problem twice. Hard to schedule appointments to get the right part--had two no-shows to scheduled appointments and two other arrivals outside of window given from K&S.

Furnace unit leaked water, had to purchase and put in a pump a couple of months after install. Charged extra for that.

When I contacted office lead about all of these issues, I was told they were too busy with other clients. Would not go back to them, would not recommend

This company told me that they did not prioritize my service call because it was no charge since I had a warranty. They were supposed to call me within 24 hours and never did. I called them a week later, and they told me I was not a priority since my AC was working, even though there is secondary damage now due to the water leak getting bigger!
She said they could get me on the schedule for 6 days later... NOPE! Called my home warranty company to cancel this dispatch and never allow them to be dispatched to my property again. I will not work with a company that lacks empathy for their customers. First impressions are key, and they f***ing failed.

An absolutely awful service. We had our furnace replaced by K&S. After inspecting our system, they installed a natural gas furnace instead of what we needed which is a propane one. This mistake is almost unbelievable for a heating and air company. After they convert it to propane and get it running, we find a propane leak where they were working. We attempted to get them out to fix the leak, but they first show up without the tools to pressure test our system to find the leak and then send a totally different guy who doesn't even show up to our house. I gave up with them and called a different company who was out within the day, leak was found and fixed immediately. All in all, K&S is NOT worth the hassle.

We had a new Lennox furnace installed 8 years ago by K & S. At first, service and maintenance was good. The past few years, not so good. After each yearly maintenance tune-up the furnace blower was very loud and someone had to come fix it. One year, the tech forgot to turn the furnace back on. The past 2 years, the maintenance techs have been telling us the Honeywell 3000 series air filter we buy at Fleet Farm is good but this year, Dan, the service tech said it could damage the furnace because it restricts the air flow so much. He said he needs to do some more education with the maintenance techs. He then told me that K & S filters were cheaper than the ones we buy at Fleet Farm (wrong). I had to bring out our old invoices to show the prices we were charged by K & S. When I told him the thermostat won't stay at the programmed lower setting at night (65 degrees), he told me he had never seen that happen before. I don't think he believed me. Last night I took a picture of the thermostat turning on at 2:22AM. Guess I should send it to him to prove my point. They charged us $99 for fixing nothing; said nothing is wrong. When my husband called this morning to complain about the charge and Dan's attitude towards me, the woman hung up on my husband. When I requested a work invoice sent to my email, Dan said he would do that. No invoice received as yet. We are no longer giving K & S our business. They are getting lazy. There are other businesses in Rochester.

I have had fantastic dealings with K&S in the past, always dealing with Brian Kuehn, so in April, I called to get an estimate for a whole house dehumidifier. I'm not sure who I talked to, but the appointment was set up for 4:00 that afternoon with Richard. Richard evidently called my house shortly after noon from him cell phone, but didn't leave a message. About 3 hours later, he called back and DID leave a message saying he was running ahead of schedule. Since I now had his cell number, I called him back.

During our conversation I said he could come over at that time, he then stated he really didn't need to come out to my house to do the estimate. He asked me what the square footage on my house was, so I gave him that information. He said he would work up the estimate and call me back. Unfortunately, he didn't call me back.

I originally waited over a week for the estimate and decided to call K&S again. I explained the situation to the receptionist and she said she would contact Richard about where the estimate was. According to him, he had mailed the estimate, but couldn't remember when. He commented that it could take 5 days or more for it to go from their location in Rochester, through the postal service to Minneapolis and then to my residence in Saint Charles.

It is now the end of May, and I still haven't received the estimate! I can't believe that one of their employees WOULDN'T take the time to contact me to make sure I had received the estimate. Lord only know WHERE he mailed it to, but it sure wasn't to me!!

Butchers! I've worked in the housing industry with the finest builders for 40+ years. I never once saw a K&S HVAC van on any of them. Now I know why. They have men who are not qualified do do work on residential jobs. These guys are butchers with a boss that will decieve  you and lie to you to not take responsibility for the most cobbled up job you will ever see. Leaving you with leaks, malfunctions........ while under warranty and say We don't owe you anything

Half a star only because they showed up and looked at my stuff. A month later and still no estimate. Basically all these types of businesses have too much work. They just don't need more money. They want big jobs only. I'll do my own electric, it's not like it takes SKILL. SO if everybody stops using them, they'll need money again and might just be a bit more accommodating. BOYCOTT THIS BUSINESS. Make them hungry!!!

We hired K&S Heating THROUGH COSTCO to install duct work, heating and air- conditioning. They came out and gave us a quote. Bottom line, they said they did what they were hired to do, even though the inspectors said things needed to be done BY THEM and could not be done by homeowner to meet code. K&S thinks they are ABOVE code rules, even though they missed many things. They charged us more than they quoted, complained because they had to come back out to location and hiring them through Costco was a nightmare. Clueless on both sides.
Furthermore the manager of K&S cussed at my husband several times and informed him that you were FIRED as a customer months ago.
Beware of this low quality customer service company, and if you hire them be prepared for them to cut corners, blame YOU for their low quality work, not know correct codes and charge you more than you agree to.

On February 17,2020, I paid Mr. Richard McCain for a new furnace and air conditioner.  Our old furnace was not working and it was cold outside.

When the crew arrived to remove the old furnace, they did not have the replacement with them.  they removed the old furnace and left.  Around 3 PM the crew left without turning on the furnace. As the house cooled down, I called Mr. McCain and he sent a service man who noted the crew had left without turning the furnace switch on.

Later that weekend, the furnace went off and Mr. McCain provided us with electric heaters that we used until Monday morning.
The opinion of the service man who came to the house was that the PVC pipe was installed incorrectly and condensation had caused the furnace to go out.

About 14  days later the Heating Inspector told me that the furnace was installed incorrectly.  It seems to me that inspection of new furnace installations should be made sooner after installation.  He never returned to reinspect the installation after K&S changed the angle of the PVC pipe.
I would like to caution anyone to not employ K&S heating for furnace installation.

The crew decided they would return in the spring to install the air conditioner.  On May 6, 2020, 3 men arrived to install the air conditioner.  I overheard one of the men say he had been hired that morning.  They completed the installation around 3 PM that day.  On May 7,2020 i noted the temperature in the house was 70degrees, with the thermostat set at 75.  I called the service desk and the man who came said the thermostat was set to 62 degrees at night. I did not want that.  I also asked them to adjust the out doors part of the air conditioner so that it was level.
Do not hire K&S for furnace or air conditioning installation.

Crookedest company I have ever dealt with. They were hired through Sears to install a new A/C unit for us when we first moved in. They did an ok job (it worked but was messy in appearance (loose tape, insulation sticking out from holes they had drilled through the wall, etc)) but my big complaint was that they threw their info stickers on EVERYTHING in our utility room. We had a sticker on absolutely every item in our utility room (furnace, water heater, washer, dryer, water softener, posts, walls, etc). It took me a long time to get them all removed. Then 10 year later, we were having some work done again by another contractor. His HVAC guy was sick so he asked if it was ok to call in someone else to finish the job. We agreed and regretted it. He was able to reach K&S and as soon as I found out who, I was nervous but figured I would give it a chance being it was 10 years later. The guy shows up with NO equipment and then says he has to go back to get his stuff. FIVE HOURS later, he comes back with supplies while the original contractor had been standing around waiting for him at our house. He finishes the job and leaves. We pay our contractor at the end of the job. We get a court notice about 6 months later claiming we failed to pay. I call the courthouse and then K&S and our original contractor trying to find out what is up. I am told by the courthouse that K&S claimed they had made numerous attempts to contact us about payment and we were unresponsive so they filed a claim. I call K&S saying we never received any notices that they were not paid. K&S told me that they had tried calling the phone that we had listed on our account from 10 years prior but it had been disconnected so they filed a claim with the court. I called our contractor and found out he had been deployed by military shortly after our job finished and he had left his office manager in charge of settling up with subcontractors which apparently got missed. He took care of it as soon as he returned to the states. I called the courthouse back to relay what happened. I told her that a single phone call to a disconnected number should not constitute numerous attempts to contact when they did have our address being they were there even if they didn't have a recent phone number. I also explained that had we known about the situation earlier we would have paid and settled up later with our contractor. She told me to ignore the notice because it had already been dismissed while I was trying to gather information on what had happened. She told me that K&S loves to play the court card so even though our situation may not be typically, we are not the only ones that have had a court notice. So beware: you may get your job done but a court notice may follow...

This is a followup to a previous review concerning the service and installation of a new furnace, water heater and air conditioner by K & S Heating and Air Conditioning.
From the beginning, the furnace has worked very well, the water heater has a mind of its own - sometimes hot, sometimes cold water in the shower. The water heater has improved, however.
The air conditioner is a story in itself. It has to be the worst appliance I have ever purchased. From the beginning, it was noisy and rumbled throughout our bedroom and into the master bath. I complained from day one and K & S responded by messing with it probably three or four times. After that, we are on our own. K&S quit responding to my complaint.  I think it has been in service for three years now and the noise level has changed rather dramatically. It's even louder! Last week we had guests in for dinner. As we dined pleasantly in the dining room - which is on the other side of the house from the bedroom and air conditioner unit outside - a guest asked, What's that noise? To which I replied, It's the air conditioner. If it gets any louder, the neighbors will be complaining ;-)
And that's the problem. We are stuck with an inferior product that continues to become more and more inferior as time passes.
Moral of the story? Don't purchase a Lennox, and don't count on K&S to make sure you have a quality product.

Couldn't fix my hot water heater.  2 visits.  One of the guys told me I could just google it and fix it myself.  Charged 240 bucks for not fixing the problem.  Got someone else.  Wouldn't trust them to fill a kiddie.  Got another bill for 340.  Must of read the review. Just wondering if I keep on letting people know that you guys charge for not providing a service will I continue to get a increased bill each week?

Had two techs come out to look at some electrical work and see if they could give us a quote. It was going to be a big job and probably make them quite a bit of money. I didn't get a call with a quote from them for over a month, so I called and checked in. They told me the head electrician would call me within the week. A month after that call...still nothing. Called a second time and they said they have no recollection of techs being out at our house or my first phone call. Horrendous customer service and I would avoid them at all costs.

Good:
They have a very helpful receptionist!!!
that is it.

Bad:
Two weeks I was chasing them to set up appointment.
Sales rep showed up almost an hour too late.
After a week of silence, I contacted them and received a quote for just a small part of the project.
Never received a full quote not info for the project.

I do NOT RECOMMEND this company for your service.

Our positive experience was from the Minneapolis location. In a service industry that unfortunately has a few crooks, K & S is trustworthy and professional. My husband and I called them for a second opinion after a first company red tagged and turned off our furnace, telling us it wasn't safe to run and emitting high amounts of C02. Eek!
We called K & S and told them exactly what we were told. K & S came over and thoroughly inspected our furnace and showed us 2 readings to prove that our furnace was not emoting C02 and perfectly safe. They saved us thousands of dollars and made us feel comfortable in our home again, especially with a new born. The gentlemen who inspected the furnace was very friendly, prompt, polite, and knowledgeable. We will continue to utilize this company when in need!
