We have ONE bathroom, for four people. In an old house. With old pipes. Last night, the entire bathroom CLOGGED. The sink, the tub, the toilet -- all clogged and unusable. (Not to overdo the info here, but the toilet was backing up into the tub. And, apparently, into the basement too.) In case you missed it -- four people, one bathroom, and the one bathroom is totally unusable.
This is when I start wishing I knew something - anything - about plumbing.
We called Roto-Rooter and they promised to be here tonight. When Joe couldn't make it at the appointed time, the dispatcher called to make sure we knew he'd be late and that we still wanted him to come. We did. I was sure he'd get here and say that the job was too tricky for 10:00 pm -- no way. He dug right in, took the toilet apart, ran this enormous snake thing through the pipes all the way to the street, and -- voila -- problem solved. (Well, not solved ENTIRELY; we have lots more work to do to update the plumbing in my old house -- and Joe took the time, even at this late hour, to walk us through the rest of the process. He even helped us to figure out how to deal with the sewage in the basement.)
So, he fixed the whole bathroom and I get to take a shower tomorrow, and I couldn't be happier. The price was right and, what's more, Joe was the most personable and pleasant workman I've met in a very long time. Even though -- at 11:00 pm -- he still had more jobs to get to, he was very patient and explained everything to us, giving us recommendations on what fixes we should tackle next.
I'm not happy that the entire bathroom clogged (I didn't even know that could happen, yikes) but I'm very happy that we called Roto-Rooter and that we got to meet Joe (#553). I don't think we'll be needing anyone else for plumbing work again, ever.
