I needed to have a new vent installed for my dryer.I called and Adam was able to come to my house within a few hours. He was fast, friendly and efficient. Wonderful experience!
Forget about the service fee of $120 just to come out. I at least was told about that. But the fee to exchange out a dishwasher was outrageous. I asked on the phone what the ballpark cost was and was told they have to assess before giving a quote. Then the plumbers came and said they have a flat fee for this service. How dishonest. I would have saved myself $120 if she just told me their flat rate for the service I needed.

If I could, I would give the overall experience a 4, but I would give the plumber who worked here a 5. (A 4.5 would be perfect!)
We had a few small plumbing issues and we called Big Blue Plumbing based on Yelp reviews and they referred us to McMahon since we needed servicing pretty quickly and Big Blue was busy. I spoke with the dispatcher (Mike Mahon?) a few times on the phone and he said he could either send someone the afternoon I called or the next morning and he would call regardless. As promised, he called early the next morning and sent someone over around 11am that day. The only reason he didn't come earlier that day is because the dispatcher wrote down the wrong address and the plumber he sent out got lost. I know that mistakes happen, but for that I have taken down a star -- I would have preferred that someone called to confirm my address before getting lost around South Boston.
The plumber who came over -- Frank -- was very professional and one of the best plumbers we've hired (if not THE best). He was nice and professional and very efficient -- he went straight to work and seemed to waste no time while doing it. Plus, our building was being quite difficult about asking him to move his truck etc. and he managed the few curve balls very well.
***It is one month later and I want to add the following: All the plumbing services were great and we have had no problems since. Also, the people at McMahon have been so nice. They sent a thank you card and followed up with me today to make sure everything was alright. I have never had that experience with a plumber before (for me, they usually service the place, take my money, and disappear) so it was a really nice surprise. They seem to really care about their service and their customers and I don't think anyone who calls them would be disappointed with the service.
Sometimes there are jobs where you just need the professionals! McMahon was just that! When I called to schedule for them to come in, the secretary was very personable, and she was able to get my service in for the following day! I also warned them that my house was old and full of unexpected makeshift repairs, but they said it shouldn't be a problem. When the guys showed up, they went straight to work and were done within 15 minutes! They gave me instructions for further upkeep (so I won't need their help as often), but said we can call them at any time with any questions or for assistance. I would use them again in a heartbeat.
I had a leaky kitchen sink faucet for awhile that needed repair. I called McMahon plumbing and was warmly greeted with an available plumber the next day. Adam assessed our kitchen sink faucet and was able to replace the faucet on the same day in a very short time and was extremely kind and efficient in his work. Would definitely recommend McMahon plumbing for their reliable and efficient service.

NOT GOOD, NOT PROFESSIONAL AND NOT SERIOUS COMPANY!
I called the company and scheduled a first visit with $99 charge to have my ac unit looked at. On the day of the appointment, Chris came and wanted to be paid $129 (before even start to work) and he was saying that his name was different from McMahon... I did not understand this part... Anyways, I was there with him for the all time, I explained the problem more than once and the technician kept saying he could not help us because he did not know about the model of the ac unit and showing a lack in efforts to really try to help me to solve this problem...
After all of this, we asked to Chris to give us a quote of either repairing the existing ac unit or changing it completely, it has been almost one week and no one from the office called me back and followed up to inform me about the quote and how to have my problem solved! Please notice that I have still my ac unit broken and it is an emergency situation!!! After this Chris wanted to get $71 just because he was super slow and it took a life for him to understand what was wrong after I told him and explained twice what was wrong!!!
He seemed really confused, very slow-pace, not expert and not willing to work and have my problem solved.
I am really disappointed about this company! Stay away!
Got a call from Mike, the owner, after my little price dispute and he took care of everything and negotiated the price down with me. It's nice to see that this company actually cares about their customer satisfaction. I will definitely call these guys again!
Had an issue with a leak in the toilet on a work day. They came out immediately that morning and had it fixed in about a half hour. Courteous and professional. Great job. I would definitely use them again!

The person who answered phone refused to give me a quote over the phone to replace my old rusted garbage disposal. Would only tell me it would cost $100.00 to look at disposal before work was done.
Tech arrived and didn't look at disposal. simply said it would cost $550.00 to change disposal. I was robbed and I know it. But was pressed for time. They got me that time. Will never use them again or recommend them.
No issue with the work performed. Do note that they will be very expensive for smaller jobs - better off calling a handyman if it's something you can probably do yourself but just don't have the time.
Good customer service and responsive in emergencies. Worked with me to resolve my issues with prior service.
The fan blade in one of my AC units broke in the middle of the night. I called McMahon Plumbing & Heating as I've used them before. They charged $129 just to come out. The tech took the cover off the unit, removed the fan blade, and told me he could not tell whether the fan motor needed to be replaced, or the compressor. He said he could do the fan motor for about $1,200, but if it wasn't that, we'd have to spend even more. So he recommended buying a new unit for about $4,800. He also said that he'd never heard of a Goodman AC before. Then he charged me over $200 for diagnosis - in addition to the $129 fee. But he wasn't able to diagnose the problem! I called another company for a second opinion. They sent someone out the next day at no charge. He took a look at unit, recommended replacing the fan blade, and I got a written estimate that night. Within a day, the part was in, the repair was done while I was not even home, and the whole thing cost less than I paid McMahon. I called to ask them to refund the diagnosis charge because I really felt taken advantage of and they refunded half the charge.
I've used them before and they are generally responsive and easy to deal with but I don't know that I will call them again after this.

McMahon was wonderful. They gave me a quote over the phone and stuck to it while installing my new hot water heater. It was the absolute best price in town. John and Francis were completely professional, personable, and were out of here in about an hour and half.
This was such a relief after dealing with liars and cheats who wanted double the price and refused to even give a ballpark quote over the phone! I've def found our new plumbers...

I called McMahon because something was leaking in my bathroom and I saw that they had pretty good reviews and they were local. When I made the initial call I could just see the water marks on the ceiling below.
Tech came out and diagnosed the problem, not as a plumbing issue but as a issue with cocking along tub and tiles. I fixed the problem as he suggested. That did not solve the problem. I understand that there is some trial and error associated with jobs I could understand if there was an error, but my issue comes when I call back to tell them that there is now water actually leaking onto the floor so their technician have given me an incorrect diagnosis. Customer service rep stated they could not come out for 2 days. I paid the service fee for them to just come out and diagnose the issue and they were incorrect. The least that they could do was send someone out same day to actually look at problem and provide a correct diagnosis even if the work could not be done same day. If I would have got the correct information to start with I would not have to waste another day finding another plumber to diagnose a problem I already paid them to diagnose.

Would give zero stars if I could!
This review is a couple of years overdue (but thanks to McMahon Plumbing annually sending me magnet calendars with their business logo and phone number to keep them top of mind I will never forget about this crappy experience).
First of all: I should have steered clear when the owner (I believe it was the owner) was mega rude on the phone for no reason whatsoever when I called to figure out what might be happening in my condo (fan not blowing air from the central heating system of the building) and whether he had an idea of what the issue could be and how much something like this could cost. I don't remember his exact words, but there was an extremely arrogant and self-entitled vibe that basically told me something like we don't really need your business in particular so take it or leave it.... As I said those were not the exact words, but it was pretty close. Great way to start communication with a potential customer bro! I am not one of those people that needs everyone (businesses) to kiss my ass and kowtow to me about every little thing, but what I definitely don't need is someone to damn near tell me to go fuck myself ,especially during the very 1st conversation that I am having with whoever is representing the business!
The reason I ultimately ended up using their services is (if I recall correctly) because it was fast becoming VERY COLD outside and I needed heat to work in my bedroom and I couldn't get anyone else to come out in a timely fashion....HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT ....
.....I was told when I setup the appointment that there is a non-negotiable going out to take a look at what's going on fee so to speak (my words) to basically charge for coming out and diagnosing the problem, but it would be waived I guess if I ended up using them for the work. This seems completely reasonable IF what took place DID NOT OCCUR.
On the day of the appointment a man wearing a quintessential I am an electrician or a plumber uniform showed up (with his name written on it and everything) and proceeded to TRY and figure out HOW to get to the fan that wasn't blowing hot air in the 1st place. It should be noted that this is a 70 unit condo building that has a central heating system and then all the units have 2-3 fans (1 in each room) that are responsible for blowing the air into the unit. So basically all that needed to happen is that a fan or a motor of a fan needed to either be a. fixed or b. replaced.
The worker who showed up (who claimed that he has been doing this for 10 years) said after about 15-20 minutes of looking all over the surrounding area of the fan's exhaust area (the area which has a protective grill that where the fan blows out the hot air ) that he does not how to access the fan without ripping apart the dry wall surrounding the fan and that until he did that he would not be able to tell me how much it would cost to fix or replace to fan. When I asked him to give me an idea of how much it would cost to then also fix the dry wall afterwards including the fan (replaced or fixed) he quoted me around a 1000 dollars, but said it could be more. I decided to cut my losses short and basically asked him to leave and he presented me with a bill for around 80 dollars, which I had no choice but to pay. LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT....the owner of this company sent some third rate HVAC guy (I am assuming....sorry I don't know anything about this industry) who I am assuming (sort of doesn't matter here) he sub contracts this gig to or it's his employee to basically show up, look stupid for 20 min and then tell me that he has to destroy a part of my wall in order for him to even tell me what the issue really is and how much it will cost to get it fixed?! Is this right? At this rate I could learn how to do the most basic of dentist procedures (say flossing someone's teeth for them) and then advertise my services saying that if I don't know how to fix your tooth problem I will still need to charge you a 'visitation fee' . In the world where I live that shit is called a SCAM.
Look you sent someone over that didn't know what the fuck they were doing (at least in the context of what I needed fixed or done). Why am I still to be charged?!
Oh and in case anyone is wondering something very reasonable : well maybe your situation was that complicated and your wall did need to be destroyed in order to access the fan (I would think this too if reading this review -- at least as a possibility)....guess again. I finally was able to track down HVAC people who have done work in our condo building before and the guy was able to reach the fan, remove it and put in a new one for about 400-500 total without disturbing any of the drywall!
Sooooo, all in all I would rather spend my Heating and Plumbing money ALMOST ANYWHERE ELSE! I did read some of the positive reviews of the folks that left a lot of them, who clearly had very different experiences from mine. Good for them.
This plumbing company was great. The service was very thorough, and Jaime was very polite. He answered all of my questions. I would recommend them.
Yesterday was one of the coldest days of the year and all the plumbers I called were deluged with emergency requests from people with no-heat issues. Though mine was not technically an emergency, my toilet broke and I could not turn the water off (seriously - several of the plumbers tried to talk me through it, but nothing worked and running water = $$$).
Like the rest, McMahon said they probably couldn't get to me for a week or so, but somehow found a way to fit me in SAME DAY!!! They sent a technician (Taylor), who could not have been nicer or more competent. She had no trouble fixing my problem. I could not be happier with this company!! The customer service was wonderful and the plumbing service was outstanding. I definitely recommend McMahon!

Mike and his crew removed our old furnace, updated one of our heating zones and installed a new boiler/hot water heater combo. They were for the most part friendly and efficient though the job did end up taking longer than predicted. We will use them again for heating/plumbing needs. They treated our home as their own and were very respectful and willing to explain the different phases of the process.

McMahon Plumbing + Heating are terrfic! We highly recommend them. We called to have a leak fixed and Julie had us at hello!! She had a plumber out to my sister's house that afternoon. It turned out to be a 2 person job and they came back the next day and took care of everything. The leak is all fixed and now my sister has a wonderful new plumber to call if needed. It's reassuring to know that my sister can call them for work that needs to be done. Julie was sweet and funny and concerned about the problem. It's very refreshing to do business with a company that takes pride in what they do and who employs really nice people. It was truly a pleasure to meet them, to have them do work for us and we look forward to counting on them in the future.
I was keen on getting a new toilet and sink into my apartment in Back Bay, and needed a Plumber to come in to assist. After reading reviews for McMahon Plumbing & Heating I decided to give them a call. One of three Mike's answered the phone, and was very pleasant. He gave me a simple breakdown of price which included a service charge of $90, and $140 an hour. By his quick assessment of the job at hand, this process wouldn't take more than one-two hours. I get a call this morning at 7:45am asking if they can come by at 9am. As I desperately needed this done, I agreed and simply asked for verification of service and price. The gentleman on the phone began to get aggitated saying, Look here lady..., and explained the service charge of $90 plus $140 an hour after that. As it was explained, the meter started as soon as his guy left the shop, and didn't stop until he was back at their offices. By his calculations as to what needed to be done, a simple job would take all day costing well over $1000. I asked if I could take 5 minutes to think it over, and his response was, Don't dilly dally, Lady. We've got other jobs to take care of. Needless to say I will not be referring McMahon Plumbing & Heating which is too bad as I have many people in my building looking for a good plumber. Customer service and honesty goes a long way for repeat business!
FEMALES BEWARE. This company is not truthful, will take advantage of young ladies who they assume don't know any better. Thank God I got a second opinion- saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. Notice all reviews are either 1 or 5 stars? Their reviews are full of either family/friends, or honest consumers trying to warn the public of this company.
Stay away -- these guys are not reputable and should be avoided at all costs.
1. Seemed like sump pump wasn't working in our basement
2. Called McMahon plumbing
3. McMahon plumber visited and said sump pump was working fine
4. McMahon plumber replaced $8 valve without authorization and charged us $350

7. Called Alewife Co.
8. Alewife plumber visited and diagnosed sump pump as broken
9. Alewife plumber replaced entire sump pump in 30 mins
10. Alewife Co. charged $300 total
11. Everything is working great

After seeing my review on Yelp, Mike (I believe the GM), gave me a call to see what could be done to better my experience. He kindly explained their fee structure and explained in more detail how the price got to be so high, especially being in Boston. As I was still not pleased with the total amount, he offered to rebate me 100$, which I very much appreciate. I would suggest that they post their fee structure clearly on their website to avoid any confusion/unhappiness for other customers like myself, but I do appreciate their good customer service and willingness to rectify the situation.

Expensive flat fee followed with terrible customer service. Wouldn't even add a description to the receipt (which I needed for MassSave).
Quoted an insanely high cost for the fix.
Our water heater started to leak slowly on Friday night. Mike offered to look at it over the weekend at an emergency rate or come out first thing Monday morning. We decided to take a chance and wait. Two of Mike's plumbers showed up first-thing Monday morning as promised and replaced the water heater, which was under warranty, in a couple of hours. Mike charges a pretty penny but we were pleased with his service.

I have used McMahon twice now. In both instances they had competent, friendly and professional employees at my house within hours. It is so nice to have a company that is so focused and concerned with customer service these days and actively investing in relationships.
You bet I'll pay more for good service and a company that really does follow-through on their promises. Showering and being able to use my toilet are pretty important to me too!!!!
I am one of those people who waits as long as humanly possible to turn my heat on. When I got home yesterday and it was 52 degrees in my house, I realized it was time. Unfortunately, the heat didn't seem to be working. Realizing that nothing I did worked, I resigned myself to the fact that I would need to call in a professional. I saw the deal available for McMahon here on Yelp, they're in Hyde Park and I'm in Roslindale so I purchased the deal and called them. They had a cancellation and were able to have a crew at my house within an hour. Jamie and Nate quickly identified and were able to fix the problem. I have no complaints. Will call again.
In short - would avoid at all costs.
The company was recommended by a friend to help fix a slow-draining bath tub. They ended up using air pump, busted the piping and caused a considerable leak with water damage (i.e. cieling holes in the two rooms below the bath). This cost us $500, with invoice citing they left the premise in good shape - despite the holes as the evidence to contrary.
They said they would call the following day and fix the issue, but subsequently strung us along for 4 weeks until we called ourselves. The owner finally got in touch and provided us an estimate of $4,000 to fix the problem - this was more than twice the estimate of their original quote.
We then contacted a different plumber who fixed the issue in 2h work for $310.
I did what every responsible homeowner does when something happens at my house: I do some research online to try and find a combination of the best service at the best price possible. I will not cheap out on service for my home because I know that good quality work comes at a cost.
Recently, I had a very specific problem with the water pipes in our rental property. My father in law is a plumber (unfortunately he lives out of state, so he could not fix it), and very clearly described what the problem was and what needed to be fixed. Armed with this knowledge, I started calling the reputable (read: highly Yelp rated) plumbers in the area. Understandably, rates varied dramatically. For the job, I got quotes ranging from $350-850. McMahon quoted the highest price ($850) and I let them know that the price was more than double what other (well-reviewed) plumbers had quoted me. I asked if there was any room to negotiate on the price. McMahon said we don't need someone who is cheap and hung up.
Clearly I know what line of work I should have gone into. Had I been a plumber, I could essentially tell people to fuck off because I earn way too much money as is.
At the end of the day, I went with another plumbing company that had a higher Yelp rating (4.5 stars) and did the job for $625. Not the cheapest, but the person I felt most comfortable with doing a careful job because he actually cared about my business.
I worked with McMahon Plumbing & Heating on a kitchen renovation, including replacing a sink and garbage disposal, relocating a gas range, installing a water fill line for fridge, installing a radiator, and relocating a hose spigot. They also replaced some corroded pipe that was uncovered during demo. Their pricing was fair and upfront, and they were prompt, professional and friendly. I look forward to working with them again whenever we need a plumber, and recommend them very highly.
Very happy with the work they have done for us over the years. Very responsive, clean and efficient. I highly recommend them for anyone in or around the Dedham area.

McMahon plumbing really helped me when I needed it most! A sewer pipe burst in my basement and they came immediately to diagnose the problem and then they came back and found the blockage and put in new piping to fix the problem. They were extremely professional and very knowledgeable. They have fixed other problems for me and the results are always great. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing plumbing or heating work!

Professional from start to finish. We had a new tankless water heater installed which was the best purchase my wife and made in 2017. McMahon Plumbing and Heating was professional, fast and delivered as promised. They are worth every penny. I should have written this after the great job they did but I didn't get around to it and forgot. Then last week when temps were below freezing my heater broke. I am sure they were very busy with emergency calls that week, but they somehow found time to come out and fix my heater the same day. Don't think twice give them a call you won't be disappointed.

This plumbing company is the worst. They play with their numbers and it's hard to tell what product you're getting and what there service encompasses. I guess it's normal to be charged $300.00 under service to apply for a permit. We were charged 2000.00 for replacing a water heater. McMahon at my door with water heater they must have had to unload. Not what I wanted and not consulted.
If it were possible to give this stellar company ten stars, I would do that. They installed a new water heater a couple of years ago - rapid, efficient service. I recently called for a heat problem and, due to a miscommunication, they ordered the part but didn't notify me. Thinking they had forgotten me, I called the original installer of the system and the part was replaced. When I notified them, they immediately refunded the $229. I paid for the service call. Rare customer service in this day and age. Highly recommended for all your plumbing and heating needs.

As a new homeowner, I learned a very expensive lesson by Googling and calling the first place that came up on the Google search. This company is not interested in building a customer base of repeat customers. I called them in a emergency situation. I didn't expect they would open my main drain and allow its contents to spill over my basement floor. I had expected some warning, some instruction, or maybe even a heads up to be prepared with buckets, etc. The plumber suggested I 'get my boyfriend to clean it up'. The owner was even more sexist and condescending, referring to work completed by a contractor a few months ago, saying 'somebody should really talk to that guy'. Completely unprofessional and overpriced.
my heat stopped working yesterday and these guys said they would come take a look this morning. i took the day off work to be here.
11 am rolls around and i call to ask when they'll be here. they said a couple of hours. 3 pm and still nothing so i call again. now they can't get here until tomorrow.
i understand that stuff happens but it's completely unacceptable to not call when you know you're not going to make it. its now too late for me to get anyone else here today, and i have a 10 month old baby who will need to spend another night without heat.
i would not call these guys if you are in a rush or care about your schedule.
Called and spoke to the manager about help replacing the toilet seat on my high tech toilet. Though it is a simple task, he promised me he would call in the morning between 7 - 8 next day to let me know the schedule for the day and if he could fit my task in. Call came in at 7:30 telling me the plumbers would be arriving at 8:30. Right on time two friendly and courteous men, John and Mike, arrived. Trudged up the 4 flights and remained in good humor. John took one look and had the seat swapped out in minutes. We sent Mike down to the basement for the paperwork and met him there. Very reasonable rate and John gave me some advice on hooking up a grill and patio heater.
Around 4pm I received a follow up call from the manager to find out how things went and to make sure I was happy.
Great experience and great people. Price not the lowest, but they did the work quickly and cleanly. I am putting them in my favorites and will definitely recommend them to all my friends and neighbors in the Boston area.
All potential consumers be aware. If you are looking for a quote from a company that sizes up your wallet (makes comments about if you hit the lottery), refuses to provide exact budget ideas or precise service options; belittles the consumer experience by being overbearing with misogynistic comments... go with this company. Representative (Mike) gets upset when you truly are trying to budget... takes a strong stance as if he's emotionally tied to a bidding war. Does not appear to have high regard for his staff (refers to employees as midgets). The main representative is very rude and unreassuring. Does not stand by his word leaves consumer hanging while not providing quote as initially said. Strongly urge you to search for services elsewhere. This company is in dire need of professional improvement especially with regards to customer experience.

Horrible! We hired to fix a leak and to change faucet. The leak was never fixed and our new ceiling is now ruined again. Called twice and finally got a call back from owner. Made it sound that we did something wrong and they only were hired to change a faucet. We were told that they can't do anything without us being charged to fix the problem that we hired them in the first place. WILL NEVER USE AGAIN. Wanted to give a local company my business but that was a big mistake.

These guys have done two jobs for me now. They came out to inspect a hot water tank leak and do maintenance on the hot water system. They were on time, professional, and respectful. They found the tank to have leak and helped me get it replaced for free under warranty. On the second trip they did a large day long job, replacing the tank and fixing another problem that came up. The owner worked with me on a price that was fair. Adam was my technician. He was great and you should request him. Quality of work was excellent, they left the work space clean and even out in protective boot covers so they didn't bring a mess into my home.
I called and scheduled an appt and was told it was $129 just to come to the condo and give me an estimate. I needed the work done quickly so said okay. I need to have the faucets installed on a kitchen and bathroom sink (and I had purchased those already) and have the drains installed and supply lines installed.
The technician arrived and spend 10 minutes looking at what I thought was a simple job and told me that the cost would be over $1400! I questioned the technician but basically he was following the program on his iPad. I called McMahon's office and questioned them and they told me the project was more involved that what I thought and that they would have to rearrange the technician's afternoon because of the time it would take him. They also agreed to take off the $129 fee for come to the condo to give me an estimate. Bottom line: He did the job (probably in a little more than an hour (acutal work) - he did say he had to get parts from a plumbing house and grabbed lunch but was also on the phone constantly with other technicians. He also did install some trim work on the shower fixtures (and he told me he should have charged me for that but didn't). I was in a situation where I needed the job to be completed that day but I have learned my lesson when it comes to planning ahead.

I called McMahon on the recommendation from a neighbor because of a plumbing emergency. We were not even existing customers of McMahon and they were at my door within 30 minutes and did a fantastic job. I highly recommend them!!

Complete rip off ! these guys charged $2000 to replace a water heater when I complained they knocked it down to $1700. This is a $1000 job a best. They are fast they are prompt but you will pay double beware!!
So even with a screen cover, my shower drain was barely draining. I tried to unclog it with a plunger (not the same one I use for the toilet) to no avail. I didn't want to use a harsh chemical solution, so I decided to bite the bullet and use a real drain service. The guy from McMahon arrived quickly, and understood that my building, which is garden style, over 50 years old, and has 15+ units can be a little delicate. I was concerned that the fix might damage the older pipes, but within 20 minutes my shower was draining like new, and there were no issues. Now I just need how to figure how out how to prevent the shower from getting clogged again!

Would NOT recommend. McMahon was rude when I repeatedly called to have someone come out to look at my furnace and told me there would be a $99 charge just to come out. The guy who was sent to my place was actually really nice and told me McMahon would follow up with a quote for a new furnace and water heater, which I needed ASAP to move forward with a mass save loan. After repeated calls, one week goes by-no quote, three weeks-no quote, five weeks-no quote....It has now been seven weeks and, after phone calls and rude responses from McMahon - STILL NO QUOTE. Then he finally says that he does not have to send a quote! I will NEVER contact this business again. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND A WAIST OF MY $99. Boston Standard came out for a FREE assessment, sent me a quote right away, have been extremely professional and personable.
McMahon plumbing has some serious issues going on in their scheduling department. I've now had them not show up to my home on two different occasions after I stayed home from work each time. When I have called to inquire about what's going on, they didn't have me on the schedule either time. They aren't even remotely apologetic about it, and don't care that you just wasted an entire day waiting for them. I gave two stars because the two employees who have come to my house have been nice guys, but their services are overpriced and I won't be using them anymore for my heating and plumbing needs.

OK I just had a very mediocre experience with McMahon Plumbing.
First- What happened:
1) they came to fix my sewage ejector pump, the guy who arrived was very hard to understand (unusual accent), and spent a lot of time whining about parking, etc
2) they presented me at the end with a $95 charge just for showing up- but no one had ever told me about that charge when I made the appointment.
3) They spent a lot of time going through a wall to make the repair, but at the end of 6 hours of work, having closed up the wall already & reinstalled the toilet, they then tested the ejector pump, which was very loud because it had been misinstalled.
4) the man tried to tell me that the noise wasnt the pump, it was men working outside (it was so loud, it msut have been a jackhammer?)
5) once I pointed out that a) the pump was unlivably loud and b) it was running almost all the time, not shutting off like it was supposed to, he said he would come back the next day.
6) then he comes back the next day, and re-removes the wall & toilet, and fixes his errors from the first day.
7) In the process, they scratched my toilet really badly. I told them they needed to replace it, but the best they would do was knock $200 off of my bill.
Here are the bad parts:
1) they never tested the first pump for noise before they closed the wall up- wasting about 6 hours of everyones time.
2) they scratched my toilet really badly, and refused to replace it.
3) the guy who arrived had limited english.
4) They presented me with a $95 just for showing up fee, that they had never cleared with me when I made the appointment.
5) by doing it wrong the first time, they made me stay home from work a 2nd day while they fixed their error on the 2nd day.
6) the guy who came was very whiney about parking- he took a gig in the south end- its like that.
7) The owner was very brusque on the phone, and acted as if me telling him he had to replace the toilet he scratched made me some sort of jerk.
The Better parts:
1) They did arrive on time both days.
2) they did fix their own mistakes (a day later) (except for the scratched toilet)
3) they finally did pay some of the damage they did to the toilet.
I can't really recommend these guys- its better to fix your own mistakes than to not fix them, but its better still not to make the mistakes.

When I spoke to Mike he seemed so nice. He did explain the 99.00 service charge and I accepted that.
But when the technician came and did not have the Oring for my toilet he had to search for one outside of South Boston. He went to Weymouth and then downtown Boston, why??? It took him an 1 1/2 to find this little plumbing piece.
He took all of 10 minutes to replace and then proceeded to charge me 20.00 for it, NOT. It was worth 8.71(I looked it up in the internet).
So bottom line I was being charged 99.00, 130.00 and 20.00 for a total of 319.00, WOW for a 10 minute job.
I did call Mike and he said I should pay what I thought it was worth, such a deal.
I WOULD NEVER EVER HAVE THESE ROBBERS COME TO MY HOUSE AGAIN!!!!
THEY SHOULD HAVE MASKS ON FOR THE PRICES.
It pains me to write a poor review. McMahon came so well recommended.
First visit: arrived 3 hours late, only to tell me that they couldn't do anything for me that day. They would have to come back another day. Charges $99 for this visit.
Second visit: arrived an hour late. Informed me, once they arrived, that they could actually only do half the job, and that the second half was not possible. A second licensed plumber visited that same day, and will complete the job next week.
At a minimum, I would have appreciated better communication during this first visit, or any time between the two visits.

STAY AWAY if you own a Navien tankless water heater!!!!!
Pro: Able to schedule an appointment for next day, and the tech shows up on time
Con: Dishonest, lack of knowledge and expertise in Navien water heater
I was not getting any hot water from my Navien tankless water heater. I emailed McMahon and told them about my situation and the model of my water heater. I got a call back in couple hours and was able to schedule an appointment for next day. The tech came on time the next day and took a look of the water heater. He then told me the heat exchanger is clogged and the recommended solution is to replace the whole unit, which would cost more than $10000. I told him I would need to put some thoughts on it before making the decision. I was charged $99 for the diagnosis service charge plus $150 for the service time charge.
The next day, I searched online and found a different plumbing company which is a certified Navien service specialist. They send a tech over and he told me the 3-way valve in the heater is malfunctioning which is the reason I am not getting any hot water. They send a different tech over the next day to replace the valve and it fixed the problem. The total service charge was less than $400 (the parts were still under warranty).
So all in all, I have paid $249 to McMahon for sending a tech with minimal expertise about Navien tankless water heater. On top of that, instead of admitting he doesn't know what is wrong with the water heater, the tech provided me a completely incorrect diagnosis and recommended to replace the whole unit, which would have costed me thousands of dollars more if I had listened to him.
Quincy residents beware of this plumbing company. I had a new fridge and dishwasher delivered and needed plumber to unhook existing dishwasher and shut water off to fridge existing line for ice. Mike, the owner refuses to give you ballpark quote other than to say $79 for service charge. Day 1 they unhook dishwasher and shut water to fridge off. Cost? $179. Day 2, (granted delivery guy was 45 minutes late) they send not 1 but 2 plumbers to do this huge job. Cost? $417 which in total cost more than the dishwasher. Major rip off - Better Business Bureau here I come its unconscionable. Total time here? About 4 hours to do that job and their cost is obviously $150 an hour (which they don't tell you up front)
I'm not sure of the other reviews here. But, I had a new stove delivered to my home this week and I was in need of someone to come disconnect the gas line from our old stove, and reconnect to the new one. I did a Google search for plumbers in the West Roxbury area, and this was the second listing. I called over and had a friendly conversation with the man who answered the phone, he let me know they would call me the following day to set up an appointment. Anxious to get the new stove up and running, I agreed to wait. About an hour later, I received another call from the company, and they let me know they could send someone over that evening. Withing 20 minutes two men arrived at my house and set up my new stove, and even removed the old one. They were very forthcoming with the cost of the project and were unbelievably friendly. I was extremely please with my experience with this plumbing company and wouldn't hesitate to call again if we ever need anything.
McMahon installed a new hot water heater in 2007 and sold me an extended warranty. The water heater now needs service and McMahon will not return my phone calls. I contacted the manufacturer and was told my extended warranty was never registered and, in fact, the 12 year warranty I purchased was never an option for my model. Total rip off.
Today was the third time I've had McMahon came to my house. As usual, John was on time, polite, professional, and a generally all-around great guy. He even took his boots off at the front door.
All three times that McMahon plumbers have come over to fix something, they, like John, have been on time, professional, utterly competent, and unfailingly polite. They come, they fix, they leave. They guarantee their work and parts, they are reasonably priced, and you won't have to wait for an appointment.
I recommend them highly!

Only completed half the job of replacing a water heater. When the job became difficult (removing the old water heater) they became non-responsive to our phone calls. When we did finally get in touch with them, they demanded an upcharge for something they were well aware of when the job started - the water heater was located in a business we didn't own which had operating hours - the job took longer than those operating hours so the business told them to return. Eventually, the team became downright rude and told us they wouldn't complete the job or refund us our money.

We had a recent good experience. Our water heater failed and needed to be replaced. Two technicians spent the morning trying to work on it, initially thinking the thermocouple was the only issue. then, a second part was also failing. They told us it was no longer worth it to replace the 2 parts on a 2008 water heater.
Then they had to leave and come back with a new water heater, which they quickly installed.
The water heater had been a problem for a day or two before we got to McMahon. We had done our due diligence and called around several companies with questions and for competitive quotes/estimates. Many companies could not come out for several days.
McMahon was available the same day and did a fine job. For a traditional water heater, McMahon was competitive in price. One of the techs was very helpful in answering our many, many questions.

I recently bought a house and the furnace had a service sticker with the name of McMahon on it. One day the heat was not working so I called McMahon and spoke with the receptionist that said someone would get right back to me - they never called. I filled out their on-line service form saying it was an emergency - no call at all. Business must be pretty good for these guys - but after reading the reviews, I can see it's not! Don't bother with these guys.

I scheduled with McMahon Plumbing to do a routine job. The scheduler said that the technician could come out the next morning at 8:30ish. At 9:30, I called the office; they contacted the technician who apologized and said he would be out at 10:20ish. At 10:50, I called the office again. The man who answered was extremely rude, and stated that he was going to cancel on me. Right at that moment, I saw the McMahon truck come around the corner. The scheduler still insisted on canceling, stating that they had 19 other things do do. He did not apologize and said I would have to call back next week. Needless to say, I scheduled my repairs with another company.

We just bought a condo and we had a faucet leak. They came and fixed the water leak. They were professional and work was completed.
I contacted this company for a quote to connect a gas line to a grill. Owner explained that he charges an intial $74 service fee to evaulate what the job required on top of whatever the cost would be to do the job. Conceptually, I could have agreed to the fee but he refused to provide even an estimate for the cost of the job which he clearly had done before and for which he proceeded to explain during the conversation what would be required to do it. In contrast, the three other plumbers I contacted provided at least an estimate and explained in a professional manner the work and potential associated charges. This guy's take it or leave it attitude in addition to the refusal to provide any estimate raised concerns as to whether I would be charged a fair price for the work as well as hinted the likely unpleasant experience it would be to work with this company. So, I did not choose this company to do the work.
Reading the other review, I believe my instincts and decision were correct.
I Reached out to McMahon Plumbing & Heating two weeks ago Wednesday and spoke to Mike. I explained my situation, where I needed a price quote for a UTICA boiler for a three family home in Roslindale. Was really excited to hear he was going to call me that week Friday and swing by. I called my husband and provided the information, my husband reached out to Mike because he wanted to provide a little more information so he can have all that's needed for a solid quote by Friday. Friday came and left and still two weeks later and no phone call from Mike. So here I am still looking for for someone to provide a quote. We're in need of a boiler and would like it done as soon as possible. Anyone reviewing this know of a more reliable company? Please email me at
[email protected].
Thanks!
Highly recommended - I used this company twice recently to install a dishwasher, gas stove and faucet. The staff who answered the phone and came to my house were very polite and prompt, called when they said they would and even cleaned up after themselves. The owner even followed up with a courtesy call after to check I was sastisfied with the work. Will definitely use again.

Been meaning to write a review for a couple weeks...had a great experience with McMahon Plumbing & Heating.
Long story short, our water heater was leaking badly and needed to be addressed. Did a little research and decided to opt for McMahon Plumbing & Heating. I am happy that I did.
On the same day, a technician came out to assess the situation, provided me with some very reasonable options, didn't apply any pressure to go either way, and ultimately, we came to a solution as to how best to deal with the situation.
It was done the same day, they were efficient and the price was comparable to any other. Been pleased with it ever since....fast forward a few weeks later, after the work was done, the water pressure in the kitchen of our home was very weak, so I called back to McMahon Plumbing & Heating and spoke to the man himself (Mike!) and he gave me some advice and even suggested I take some pics and email them to help further diagnose.
They are courteous, helpful, knowledgeable and while I don't necessarily like the prospect of having to deal with plumbing issues, living in an old home as we do, I know that it might be a recurring theme and I find comfort knowing that McMahon Plumbing & Heating is but just a phone call away.
They do great work. Give them a shot.

If 0 starts was an option I would go 0.
I've had 3 experiences with this company and all lacked luster, the latest drove me to write this review. At my latest call I was requesting a quote to do submeter job. The tech (the owner) treated me with minimal respect and has a bad attitude to be honest, not sure if it was because I was a woman, of color or young(ish) either way I was not impressed with his demeanor toward me. They charged me 129 to give me the quote told me it only covered 15 mins?!? either way got a nearly 7500 quote on the job. In the end for the 129 I paid to learn that they either don't know how to do the job or they over quote to not get the job and still make a quick 100 bucks. Ended with another company that charged almost 1/3 of McMahon's quote.... at $2500. Go with someone else if you can!
Called up during a cold spell to get work done on my failing heating and he told me he was booked and is not interested in coming out. Asked if he could come over the next few days and he said he is not even interested in scheduling an appointment. Thank but no thanks.

These guys are way over priced beware they will not quote you an hourly rate. So be prepared for $400 - $500 per hour.
Michael McMahon is a total jackass. When I had the audacity to inquire if his plumbers were insured, he became belligerent and answered we've been in business since 1952! This does not indicate that a company carries insurance for their plumbers that work IN A RESIDENCE.
Being female, I can't help but wonder if Michael McMahon (owner) would speak to a man in the same fashion. So ladies, have a male call.
Overprice and the service is mediocre.

This company needs to do a better job with customer service; we placed 2 calls on two different days before anyone got in touch with us. Several times my husband gave the updated telephone number to the office. The next day we almost gave up hope they would come so we went to the neighbors house, 2 minutes away as they said they would call 30 minutes before arriving. When we came home about 30-40 min later the truck was in our driveway and the serviceman had a bad attitude. Not only had he called the wrong number, but the office did as well, calling a landline. I wish they could give a job to someone who can listen to customers when a new number is given. After all that, problem not solved so we had to pay the service call (that's understandable) but now we have to find a reputable plumbing company.

I called for a plumber to come check my kitchen sink which had a leaky faucet and the garbage disposal seemed damaged. A plumber came by and a $99 service fee later, he found something stuck in my garbage disposal and that was solved. Now, my faucet was a different story. I was quoted $800 to rebuild my faucet, $650 if they provided a new faucet w/installation, or $350 to install a new faucet if I decided to buy one on my own. A few days later I called, after purchasing a faucet, I was now quoted $450 to install it, plus another $99 for the service fee. Another service fee was upsetting enough, but having the previous plumber deny he quoted me $350 sent me over the edge. I told the gentleman who came out I would pay the $550 but I will NEVER use them again. He called the office and got back to me that they would waive the service fee and just charge me the $350. I wasn't happy though. Playing with numbers and trying to take advantage of me left a bad taste in my mouth.
A few years back one of their HVAC Techs broke my thermostat. He promised to come back and give me a new one. Two weeks passed...nothing. I called the office and they sent someone to replace it. I was disappointed as they replaced my thermostat with a used, raggedy thermostat. I should have known better to call them again. But my heating system hasn't given me problems so I let that slide. Now I wish I'd read the reviews prior to calling them.

Only positive comment I can say is that the tech showed up early.
Short of that, they charged $129 just to show up, then over $700 to replace a faucet... If that's not a scam, I don't know what is.
They were working on my great aunts place, and it feels like they scammed her.
Not only did they charge an exhorbinant amount of money to do something that can be done in 30 minutes by anyone, but they refused to address one of the original issues she talked to them about when scheduling, which was low pressure issue on the cold water side.
The plumber claimed that this was not his problem, and that he couldn't do anything. He stated she would need to call and schedule another appointment (would be charged ANOTHER 129 fee just to show up) just to look at it.
Folks in the Boston area beware! Probably smart to avoid this company if you can.
I called McMahon to diagnose a water heater that wasn't working. They sent out 2 guys but neither seemed to have a ton of knowledge about water heaters. The guy told me people don't generally repair them, they just install a new one - and told me it would be $2,500 for a new installation. He didn't really troubleshoot on his own, just got the manufacturer on the phone and let them do it. In the end, the tech on the phone said I needed to replace 2 parts. The plumber called his boss to get a quote on the parts. Meanwhile, we waited and I think I was charged for this waiting time. I also asked the guys to take a look at my shower head, and they basically looked but said it was hard to diagnose since I'm not in a single family home and essentially just acted like they didn't want anything to do with it. I had to pay them $225 for the hour they spent there, mostly on the phone with the manufacturer (which I could have done myself). After they left, they called and said they could get the part in 7-10 days - meanwhile I have no hot water. When I asked for a quote on the part and the work, they said they couldn't give me a quote on the part until they ordered it. What sense does that make? So I just hung up and called another plumber. In the end, turns out there was a bird in the motor - so they were wrong on their diagnosis. On the plus side, this company was easy to get in touch with, responsive, and came out very quickly.
I've used McMahon three times: major boiler work, gas line replacement, and inside drain pipe replacement. Their work is 5 stars. Their pricing is 2 stars.
The good: they will show up when you call them and get the job done. Their folks are professional and detail-oriented.
The bad: you're going to pay 50-100% more than what you would pay another plumber.
To be honest, I wish Mike would just say that upfront. We'll show up quickly, and you'll be happy with our work. But we're going to charge you a lot more than other folks. That would be a lot more honest, and I still think people would sign up for it

Our hot water heater broke on a Sunday and our basement was flooded. We called several plumbers and McMahon's was the only company that got back to us that day. They were prompt, showed up when they said they were going to, and very quickly determined the solution, which, unsurprisingly, was to replace the water heater.
They arranged to come back the next day and install a tankless water heater. We had been anticipating this cost, as our previous water heater was near the end of it's warranty, and were very familiar with the typical pricing for installation for a tankless water heater, which is not cheap. The price that they quoted us was within a normal range - a bit higher than we had been quoted by other folks, but considering that it was an emergency situation and they worked extremely quickly to do a big job and replace our water heater to an upgraded version by 2pm the next day, it was worth it.
Everyone we spoke to was extremely professional, patient, and helpful. Adam was awesome and Adriana helped us out a ton, including arranging a follow-up visit to follow up on something. They also were very fair about service charges.
We would definitely recommend them and use them again.
Intuitive pick from the yellow pages for a local plumber (i so seldom need one), and glad i called McMahon. Greeted first by a personal recorded msg from Mike and then received a prompt return call. He promised to send a guy out early afternoon the next day and did just that, calling twice in the meantime to update me on who was coming and when to expect him. Adam was polite, amicable, professional, and skilled. He got the job done rather quickly with relative ease, all the while showing respect for my home and space (e.g., wearing shoe 'socks' to keep the floors clean), using some parts i provided, which reportedly reduced the cost a bit. Really pleased with my experience. I would call them again, but hope it'll be a long while before i need to!
Courteous folks. Came out promptly but blindsided by the $100 just-to-show-up fee which was never mentioned plus the very high sounding quote for the problem. Had to pay up and find another plumber who did it promptly and well for a third of the cost they quoted. Strongly recommend you get an upfront quote from them for the visit before they come out to your house and be ready to pay $$$ for the job.

Useless. Asked for a rough estimate for replacing a circulator pump for my heating system and was met with a Dunno. It all depends. We charge $79 to come out and then we'll let you know. Wouldn't even give me an hourly rate or any estimation of how long it would take. No thanks.

The plumbers who came were respectful and kind. The rest felt like a scam. Close to 300.00 when they left saying they would get back to us later about a part AND that we would have to pay the 129.00 show up fee so they could then put in that part. Problem NOT solved when they left and then they never called back about that part. Shame on us for not doing more research. AVOID.
Unprofessional & Unreliable
Unless you enjoy spending the entire day waiting, only to find out you've been completely blown off (without even receiving a phone call), find a different plumber.
I am a very understanding person when it comes to scheduling conflicts, but when the person has the audacity to blow off an appointment without a heads up, I find that simply unacceptable. If I did this at my place of work I would be fired... For this reason, I am writing my first Yelp review.
A little over a week ago, I called McMahon Plumbing to schedule some work in my bathroom. Since I work M-F 9-5 like many people, they agreed to come in on the following Saturday (something I very much appreciated). The individual I spoke with said they would call on Friday to let me know what time to expect them.... Friday afternoon comes around and no phone call. I eventually called them to confirm the appointment for the next day-- Oh yeah, we'll be there any time between late morning and early afternoon. I will call 30 min to an hour before arriving.... The next day comes and goes as I stuck around waiting. They never called. I tried to give them benefit of the doubt thinking they were probably just running behind schedule. I decided to try calling around 2pm--no answer... Never to be heard from again. This was received as a total disregard for someone else's time.

I contacted McMahon plumbing a week in advance to schedule. I work full time and planned so that they would come on a vacation day. I was told they would be at my home at 10 to 10:30 in the morning. By 11:00 they were not here. I called and got voice mail so I left a message asking when they would be at my home.
No response.
I called again at around noon. The person who answered said he didn't know when His guy would be here. I asked that he confirm when and what time.
A half hour went bye and nothing so I called again. The man I spoke to said he would call his guy while I was on the phone.
Long story short, no one would be coming today. Regular customers with emergencies take preference apparently even though I needed a plumber and booked in advance. If I hadn't called I would probably still be sitting around all day waiting.
I will NEVER use this plumber. No consideration for my time and did not seam to care that they inconvenienced me.
I had an awful experience with Mcmahon Plumbing.
They did not stick to the quote that they gave me over the phone and the new price was not told to me until after they had finished a days work and that new price was double what I was told. They also showed up with two men for a job one guy could have done..therefore the price was already being doubled.
I can't help but think it was because I was a women home alone...an easy target maybe..??
Very unprofessional...not sure if it was dishonestly or them being unclear..but regardless it is bad business.....I had to fire them.
I do not recommend them.
Edit: I was just able to get the owner on the phone. He assured me he'd be over in the morning, I'll let you know if it gets fixed and if they are reasonable.
Honestly, don't know who I'm more angry with - myself for not trusting my gut (and yelp!) or mike McMahon for calling me and convincing me I needed his service after I had canceled Bc their first visit to our house was outrageously expensive. To quote another user on here, avoid at all costs. I'm out over 3k and don't know what I have to show for it.
As many others have mentioned, you start with a bogus dispatch fee (the fact that you're then paying them an hourly wage that's sky high adds insult to this injury.)
I explained the error code we were getting on our rinnai hot water heater, they came out (remember I paid 129 for them to walk through my door) and did not fix it on day one. Instead they looked at it and said they'd come back (another 129 to come back) but in the meantime they would service my a/c. I have a newborn so when someone says that he's breathing in bad air, I listen. Welp, 600 dollars PER split to clean the coil. My head screamed this is outrageous but I'm a sleep-deprived mom that just wants stuff done. When they told me they wanted to come back and to the water heater and other a/c units, I decided I simply couldn't afford them so I canceled. Mike McMahon then called me. He really stressed the importance of servicing it and I fell for the whole I'm the owner of the company and I'm calling you to tell you we'll get this figured out.
So today I paid for them to come out and take care of the system. Fast forward to tonight and bang, error code is back. Again, to quote another user, they should wear masks. I can't believe I let my family get robbed blindly like this.
