Vanguard Plumbing & Drains

We just purchased a home and one of the issues identified during the inspection was an outdated water shut-off gate valve and a defective pressure regulator.

Robert responded quickly on Yelp, guided me to the information he needed to provide an accurate quote and offered to send a plumber, Dave, out the next day (even though this wasn't an emergency).

Dave showed up promptly and installed a ball valve and a new pressure regulator faster than I could Google, what's the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve? When he was done, we walked through the house and discussed other plumbing issues identified in our inspection. He was very knowledgeable and patiently explained the solutions they could provide.  

I got two new quotes for additional work the same day and already authorized them. They are fast, friendly and fair!

I hired Vanguard to replace a shower valve in my bathroom. They responded promptly to my request for a quote. They were reasonably priced and the plumber that came was courteous and professional.

In Vista the water bill comes through Vista Irrigation, every two months. I had a bill at end of 2022 that was higher than I expected, then first bill of 2023 was mammoth. Obviously a leak. Now some leaks will require a specialty outfit, but Vanguard said let us have a look and I decided to go with them. And guess what, Vanguard came through! Robert was the plumber, he confirmed the leak, did his checks, and darn if the culprit wasn't simply a toilet running that my old ears couldn't hear. As one does I brought a couple other matters to Robert's attention, and he got those resolved. Price was fair for all the work Robert did. Highly recommend Vanguard.

Our water heater was about 20 years old, and we were in the market to either continue with the tank or go tankless. I did a bunch of research, but our water heater location made a tankless a bit difficult due to the ventilation. We had several companies come out for estimates, and Dave from Vanguard talked to us about tank/tankless and what he would do in our situation. We ultimately decided to stick with a tank.

Dave came out a few days later with a new 50 gallon tank and installed it in our tiny utility closet. Due to the new code for water heater he had to cram a bunch in there, but we ended up saving space since he was able to get it closer to the wall than it was before.

Dave was really professional and honest. Would use them again.

Vanguard did an outstanding job replacing an upstairs toilet drain pipe and flange.  Dave arrived early, was professional, nice, and shared great info and advice regarding my plumbing system.  Pricing is very fair for the work they do.  Highly recommend Vanguard for any plumbing needs.

Dave came out to fix a plugged toilet for which I paid him $125.  That was on Thursday.  On Sunday the toilet was reclogged.  Monday morning I called and they sent Dave out again.  I confirmed with the person on the phone that there would not be an additional charge and she indicated that unless it was apparent that something new had clogged the drain there would not be any additional charge.  

When Dave came, he looked at the toilet and said the charge would be another $125 and he proposed that he repeat what he had done on Thursday. I indicated that if the drain had been cleared correctly it should not be plugged again so soon.  He said that their warranty is only for 3 days and since the call came in on the 4th day (despite the fact that the 3rd day was a Sunday when they were closed!).  there would be a $125 charge.

I had used Dave/Vanguard previously for more major service plus he was already in my house, it seemed that he would at least repeat the 1 minute snake process.  He refused.  I called the office  and  the owner  apparently told  him not to do it unless I paid an additional $125.  I declined.  This whole process took more time than it would have taken to put the snake in the toilet!

Subsequently my neighbor used his  snake and the issue was resolved. This verified that Dave's 1st attempt was incomplete.  I will not  use Vanguard again and will find a plumber willing to stand behind his work.

Severely over priced & will gauge you & difficult to reach & communicate with & doesn't stand behind their work, other than that great. BTW I love it when you ask if something is under warranty & they say lets set up a service call, a service call probably 200 bucks just to find out, lol. The guy who usually comes out is actually a nice guy but wow man I've had ex wives that went lighter on the wallet than these guys. I've used these guys quite a bit in a pinch & didn't mind overpaying at the time cause I just wanted the headache gone..I guess if I have spent thousands upon thousands dollars I expect some kind of service, turns out I am wrong. I chose the wrong profession, plumbers basically have a license to print money it seems, geeeeez. I'd look elsewhere

Great service! Robert stopped by as Vanguard was used as the installation service for our Flo by Moen water valve. We are recent new home owners at this location and not only did Robert provide a professional, speedy service, but he also took extra time to show us some things around our water systems that we didn't even know. Super helpful and seems extremely trustworthy. We will definitely call them in the future for any plumbing services needed.

Vanguard to the rescue!  We could not find anyone to repair/replace our below-grade pump (sump pump).  As soon as we contacted Vanguard, they helped detect the issue and find a replacement pump. They are very communicative and professional.  Highly recommended!

Thanks to Vanguard Plumbing for the professional and competent plumber sent to us.  After having two major companies give us bids that were outrageous, we contacted Vanguard who sent Dave.  The first company's quote for changing the kitchen sink faucet of $380.00 labor only and $120.00 each to replace hot and cold water valves.  Vanguard charged $178.00 to change the kitchen faucet and $79.00 for each valve.  And at no extra charge Dave inspected our toilets and valves and gave us pointers on maintenance we could do ourselves.
This experience shows how important it is to shop around and not just accept the first bid.  We are very satisfied customers and would recommend Vanguard and Dave to our friends, family and to all who read this review.

We just got a new washer and dryer delivered...and yikes...the gas dryer needed to be hooked up to an old line with a very old lalve.  We were going to change it ourselves, but got scared at the last minute so went to yelp looking for a plumber.  So happy we called Vanguard!  Robert was so helpful on the phone and even got us set up same day with Dave to do the job.  Dave showed up within the hour and got us up and running quickly and effortlessly...we are so happy with the service!

Wow what a great shop! We had a last minute need to get a leak fixed and these folks had availability the very next day (which was the fastest we found) - they were very professional, showed up on time and were very communicative about the issues. We weren't at the home at the time (our construction manager was there) and the plumber called us multiple times to give updates, explain what was happening and give us quotes. It was a super smooth experience and we have definitely found our new preferred service!

Within a very short time a plumber, Dave Fults, arrived and was able to unclog my kitchen sink that someone else was unable to repair earlier in the day. Vanguard is very responsive and always does great work whenever we have a plumbing issue.  Dave from Vanguard refurbished our bathroom faucets so that they now look and function like new! He also repaired a leak in one of our toilets, taking it apart and methodically replacing all the worn out seals and parts.
In the past Dave also traced and repaired a pipe leak in our garage wall.

Robert came out promptly on a Saturday morning to diagnose our issue ... a water leak that soaked the kitchen walls and cabinets. He shut off the supply line, pulled out the dishwasher so we could see the source of the leak as well as the pond of water under the dishwasher, and he carefully documented all of the above via his notes and photographs. He also gave a great recommendation for a water damage remediation company to address the damage.

Robert was able to determine that the problem was caused by an over-tightened connector on the dishwasher that had been installed six months earlier by the appliance retailer (the rubber washer inside the brass supply line connector was cut by the over-tightening, thereby creating a pathway for the water to slowly drip out).

I can highly recommend Robert and we plan to use him for all of our future plumbing needs!

Robert & Dave did an excellent job of replacing pipes that had tree roots inside toilet drain pipe. Bigger job than expected and required drilling through slab to remove roots & replace pipe.

Over the past several years we've had numerous occasions to call a plumber; I just wish we had known about Robert Dixon of Vanguard Plumbing & Drains!  

This Monday morning I called Robert about a clogged kitchen sink drain.  He gave me a 2 hour window (1-3) and actually showed up at 1:15 pm!

He immediately went to work on a drain that had been supposedly cleaned out 10 months ago; obviously not very well.  Robert used his cable snake with 2 different bits and also used his camera to observe whether the drain was clear.  The first 3 times it wasn't but water was able to go through; any other plumber would have stopped.  Robert didn't!  Using his camera again he persisted in making sure the drain was clear before he left; extraordinary effort on his part.

We will use Robert and Vanguard Plumbing for ALL of our future plumbing needs!

Had a drain clog last night, went on their website to schedule a visit for the next morning. Dave showed up right on time with everything he needed. He was knowledgable, respectful and finished quickly. I had some time to spare so I also asked him to look at my dishwasher vent/drain since it was also acting up. Dave was able to take care of that as well. I plan to use them again for some other miscellaneous items around the house. Highly recommend!

I called Vanguard plumbing to come and give me a quote on an out door drain clog I had in my yard. Robert was very up front in his response to my request for a quote and was very easy to schedule a time with. Unfortunately my drainage pipe needed to be replaced, but Robert gave me a very good quote and was unbelievably informative on my options. Since there was going to be some pretty major work going on in the yard, I decided to do some yard renovations before having the pipe replaced.

A couple of weeks after Robert had come and given me an estimate for drain pipe our hot water heater decided to poop out at about 9 am on a Monday morning. I called Robert right away and he said he could be out first thing the next morning. I probably could have called around and gotten someone to do it faster, but I was so impressed with my first experience that I knew I wanted Vanguard to do the work. Robert came out Tuesday morning to look at my water heater and gave a full cost to replace it right then. He also took the time to explain to me all of the different types of water filtration and water treatment options that were available, along with the costs. Since I have a water softener and a reverse osmosis water system I was very interested in the differences between all of the systems. He also explained to me that my old water heater wasn't even installed up to building code standards. After all of the home repairs I have done I wasn't really surprised by this news. But I appreciated him telling this information.

Needless to say we had hot water running again in a few hours. The installation is beautiful and more efficient than my old hot water heater.  When Robert was finished he took the time to show me all of the functions and how to take care of system so it will last as long as possible. While he was here I showed him my yard renovation projects progress and told him I will be calling him to get on the schedule as soon I get the area all ready to go. Honestly, I probably won't ever call a different a plumber again.

Vanguard plumbing was very reasonably priced and very flexible with my ever changing schedule. They installed 3 toilets in roughly 3 hours. Their technician made sure the toilets were level due to uneven tile floors. He also answered a question regarding a noise I heard in my drain. I assumed since it wasn't in the scope of the job, he might not want to help. He informed me it was just condensation from my a/c by listening to the sound. The technician also hauled away our old toilets and trash from the new ones. Overall a great experience at a great price.

Dave caught a few things that other plumbers didn't catch when they came out for an estimate. So we were impressed. We hired them to do the job and requested Dave. I had vanguard plumbing update my upstairs bathroom drains and vents which were installed incorrectly from the previous remodeling contractor. It was a lot of work.Also had my clothes dryer vent rerouted from the attic to garage. It's working much more efficient now. Robert and Dave did a great job. The best plumber we've ever had, highly recommend. I'm a general contractor and have had numerous subs, but Robert is the best I've worked with. He helped my family and I in a crunch, our sump pump failed leaving us stranded, he came through in an emergency on a Saturday and got it done!

Robert at Vanguard Plumbing has provided us the best service today!.  The pipe of our water meter was leaking again even though it has been fixed by a different plumber several months ago. When I was calling Vanguard Plumbing on Saturday morning, Robert has professionally answered all my questions and provided me a good estimate. Within couple of hours, Robert showed up at our house and replaced the pipe efficiently.  The cost is affordable. He also takes his time to provide us a lots of good plumbing information.  I would come back to Robert again for any plumbing needs in the future.

We had a backed up kitchen sink and a leak underneath it.  We called Vanguard Plumbing to take care of it because we have had them out before to replace our water heater.  Our technician showed up on time, fixed out backup and was able to find a very subtle leak that had eluded our previous plumber.  Great Work!!  We have already recommended Vanguard Plumbing to a few friends.

Vanguard replaced a water heater and recirculating pump at my house in Carlsbad.  Robert handled the phone contact, and Dave provided the service.  Both provided good advice without sales pressure.  Dave installed plumbing connections with secure supports, and the hot water delivery throughout the house is now excellent.  While he was there, I asked Dave to check a bathtub drain, and he quickly resolved a repair issue on which a previous plumber had given up.

We had a great experience with the team at Vanguard today! We called them this afternoon with regards to a clogged toilet. We received a prompt response and had someone on site within the quoted time. Dave Fults was extremely professional and fixed our toilet within a very short period of time. He was also very knowledgeable and shared tips on toilet paper (avoid Charmin Ultra Soft) and also those pesky wipes (they're not actually flushable)! I'm a realtor with clients all over the county so it's important to find different plumbers for various areas. I found Robert via Yelp and in speaking to him immediately liked his direct style and willingness to go to my clients house and then conference me in as I had an elderly client. He removed a leaking water filtrating system and replaced a pressure valve for a reasonable price. He sent me paperwork as I asked without having to chase him down. Then months later my clients main water line cracked and when shopped against another plumber he was far less expensive and could do the work in a fraction of the time! His willingness to explain the work and cost and speak patiently to someone elderly is much much appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate to refer him to friends and clients!

My upstairs bathtub was making gurgling noises when I flushed the toilet. I called my usual plumber in Vista and told her my concern. I was told that it sounds like my main water line needs to be cleaned out but doesn't have anyone until Monday next week unless I activate EMERGENCY SERVICES. I called Robert at Vanguard. (per recommendation from my neighborhood email posts-NEXTDOOR) I told him my dilemma. He asked how often I used my bathtub. I replied NEVER. He stayed on the line and told me to run water into my tub for 5 seconds, let it drain and then flush the toilet. NO MORE NOISES from my tub. He explained that there is a water trap for my tub, but since I don't use it, it had dried out and echoes water draining from my tub. Had nothing to do with the 'main water line'. Robert charged me nothing for the phone call. I cannot express how grateful I am. Vanguard Plumbing is my main plumber from here on out!!! WOW!! Thanks Robert!
