Note: Please check out all the other Yelp reviews on O'Connor & Son's Electric (not just mine). Despite what appears to be high ratings, you'll notice there are quite a few bad 1-star reviews for Tom's services.
My experience:
A delivery truck hit a power line and knocked out power to our new commercial facility in Palo Alto. I called Tom since he was local and presumably knew Palo Alto regulations, permits, etc on electrical repairs. First thing Tom says on the phone is he's busy and it'll be $300 just for him to come out for an estimate. If you read other reviews, you'll notice his pattern of sizing up your situation on the phone, then charging $300 just for an estimate if he thinks he can get it. Since it was a semi-emergency (commercial business with no power is not good!), I agreed and Tom showed up within 10 minutes. I thought he was busy but apparently he was just sitting at home on a Thursday afternoon and was able to swing by quickly. How do I know he was sitting at home? When he showed up, he said he lived 5 minutes away and that's how he was able to come quickly.
Once onsite, he took a look and proclaimed to know what repairs were needed to restore power. I think he realized the emergency nature and proceeded to quote $12k for the repair, which I knew was grossly inflated (I'm a property manager and deal with contractors/vendors on a daily basis). At this point, a city inspector stopped by and confirmed the necessary repairs. When I asked Tom if the $12k was everything including parts & labor, he said, oh no, it's $14k + parts because there's a lot to fix. I was surprised his quote jumped by a couple thousand within less than 10 minutes, despite no new changes or requirements from the city inspector.
At this point, Tom went into his pressure sales tactic and said well, do YOU want this done or not, because I'm a very busy guy. He continued I know what to do and I can get power restored by tomorrow BUT I need to know RIGHT NOW if you want to hire me so I can get the parts and lined up my crew.
Since it was already mid-afternoon on Thursday, I had to choose between paying Tom a grossly inflated rate to restore power by the next day (Friday), or call another electrician and start over with the process (meet for estimate, coordinate with city inspector, procure parts, schedule repairs). Waiting for another electrician meant a possibly delay until Monday to restore power, and no power over the weekend could be costly for our business. I had no choice but to bite the bullet and hire Tom. Once I committed to hiring Tom, his laziness came out, as he asked if I could pick up the parts for him on my way home and bring it the next morning. I said no.
The next day, Tom showed up with a crew of 2 and proceeded to tell me It's gonna cost you $15k + parts if you want this fixed. Do you want me to start?. It was obvious that Tom was taking advantage of the situation, knowing that it was Friday and there would be further delays if I declined his 3rd attempt to inflated his fee. Regrettably, I said fine since it was Friday and I could not afford a weekend without power.
Tom and his crew of 2 started at 7am and finished the job by noon. Doing the math, that works out to approx $1,000 per hour rate for Tom and his crew (3 crew x 5 hours = 15 hours for $15k pay).
After the repairs were done, Tom's laziness appeared again. The city inspector wanted the electrical panels labeled before signing off on the permit, and Tom told me he was going to Vegas the next day, so the quickest way to get permit signed off was for me to get stencils myself to label the panels. Oh, and he also needed immediately payment so he could pull the permit before leaving for Vegas.
The irony is Tom asked me to write him a Yelp review, so here I am writing my review. My conclusion, Tom may appear to be a highly rated, helpful local electrician, but the truth is he's always looking to take advantage after he assesses the situation. If he knows he can extract more $$$$ from you with no additional work, he will. If he knows you have little choice but to pay more (for the same work), he WILL raise his rate multiple times with no shame. And he has no shame asking you to help him complete his job when your schedule is dependent on it.
Speaking of shame, shame on Tom. I'll be sure to inform my fellow property managers and people in our industry about his shady practice. Tom's definitely lost my business for life and I'll never call him again to work at any of our properties. I understand sometimes paying a premium for emergency services or faster turnaround is necessary. However, Tom crossed the line and beyond reason. He decided to be greedy, and in the process he probably lost more in future business than the extra $$$$ he extracted from this one repair.
