I had a very disappointing experience with this company. I had a slab leak and called By the Book to get a leak detection done. I made it clear that leak detection was the only service I needed from them that day, as I was going to weigh my options for plumbing. Leon came out and immediately was very condescending right off the bat. I get it, I'm a girl, I look young, but assuming I'm dumb is a bold move. I ask for leak detection, and Leon is already giving me the go around about why he can't do that. He tried telling me I don't have any water damage, even though I felt warm spots underneath our entire kitchen (meaning water was leaking and spreading under the vinyl). If I listened to Leon, we would have severe mold damage under our floors. I also knew there was water flowing in our bathroom and Leon said he didn't hear anything and implied I was just making up the noise. After not doing what I requested and instead doing a walk through of our whole house, Leon said he would be back in 5-10 minutes. He came back a full HOUR later! I had no idea what he was doing as I thought he was maybe preparing his leak detection equipment. Instead, he was ignoring my request and coming up with 10 different plumbing options to repipe the entire house. I was annoyed because all I wanted was a leak detection and Leon was refusing to do that. I quickly told him I wanted him to leave and he got visibly upset and threw a tantrum! I've never seen a professional old man do this. He told me I wasted his time, which I quickly reminded him that I never asked him to sit in his car for an hour. After throwing a fit, Leon finally left and I still had no leak detection done.
I called a different company, Mastercraft, and they came out, detected my leak, and showed me that I had bad water damage under the floors. They were very kind the entire time during the water remediation process and told me how to do everything through my insurance. I then called California Repipe and Plumbing to take a look at the leak and they had a very quick response time. They were extremely patient explaining the entire process to me and gave me very reasonable prices. It was clear they were not trying to take advantage of me and were there solely to help me.
By the Book Plumbing clearly does not train on customer service and they leech off people who are desperate for fixes. Be smart and do NOT hire this company! They will take advantage of you and be condescending the entire time.
