HISTORY
Established in 1914.
The business was founded by Gabriel Soffer and his father-in-law George in 1914, from which the name G&G is derived. The business thrived during the mass electrification of the city during the 1st quarter of the 20th century. G&G supplied the construction of the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, as well as many of the WPA projects of the era. In 1985, Erwin and his son Larry bought out the aging Barnett family. In 1994, several years after Erwin's death, Larry bought the old Dykes Lumber Yard on West 24th Street. The added space permitted another tripling of revenues. In 1993 Larry, Uncle Lah, spotted talent in his nephew Joe Fusco. Bringing Joe onboard anchored G&G into it's fourth generation. Joe's superb technical and personal skills greatly enhanced G&G's products and services, securing G&G's position as the major electrical distributor in Manhattan. Joe became president of G&G in 2004 ready and able to see us through our 100th year anniversary and beyond!

Reviews
Andrew at G&G is amazing. Willing to go the extra mile for his customers and will always do his best to get you exactly what you need. This is a one stop shop for anything electrical. Skip Home Depot or Lowe's and come here.
the person who helped me was helpful, efficient and upbeat. Delighted to know about GnG.
Looking for anything electronic/electric? Don't waste your time with Home Depot or any other large box-store hardware outlet. The folks at G&G know their stuff, cold.
And they're friendly.
And they answer the damn phone!
And their prices are more than competitive.
In an age of disappearing local hardware/supply shops, I'm thankful G&G still exists.

I discovered this hidden gem in Chelsea quite by chance. An employee from one of the local design stores recommended G & G Electric. It's a very busy store so don't expect to be catered to. The employees are handling several orders & they could definitely use an extra salesperson. G & G's selection offered a higher quality/ professional look (no cheap trim like at Home Depot) and the price was pretty comparable.
This isn't a glitzy lighting store, it's all in the name G & G Electric Supply Company Not Designers Showroom. They are very knowledgeable and I like the selection. They have a nice range of lighting with a variety of sizes on view. I like the fact they display the lights on the ceiling, as you would find them post-installation.
Additionally, I'm very grateful to G & G for helping me out after my contractor made the mistake of installing the wrong dimmers with the new LED lights I'd purchased from G & G. The lights were affordable, looked great but were humming loudly. It wasn't a low level noise, it was clearly audible & very annoying. I've heard that LED lights can do this, along with an annoying flicker. I returned and asked G & G and they told me to upgrade the dimmer switch. It turns out that the contractor installed a cheap one (no surprise). I went and purchased the new dimmer switches, had the contractor install them and problem solved.
Thanks G & G !
The most sexist, most condescending salespeople and manager EVER. I went in looking for an exterior lightfixture with the junction box built in (so one does not have to chop out the exterior wall to put in a junction box.) They derisively told me no such thing exists. They are idiots, because a typical utility light is like that. I just was looking for something more aesthetic for our Greenwich Village brownstone. I explained it, asked for manager and the manager continued in this abusive fashion. If you want helpful, knowledgable sales people for electric go to Lendy's on the bowery where all the electricians go -- and where my electrician bought me. They explained that the only product available is a utility light, they even advised against buying black because they know the paint scratches off. Avoid this obnoxious shop at all costs.

It took them at least 2 months to get a light out to me (hence the 4/5), but it was exactly what I needed and asked for. Worked with Dimitri. They're very busy so expect a wait. Don't fret, he'll always be in touch when he has an update (aka the manufacturer finally sent them your stuff). They work with multiple manufacturers so sometimes it takes a while.
Beware of this place I purchase the wrong item didn't open the item they told me I was not able to return nor exchange which I notice a day later. This place is ridiculously crazy how rude to treat customers never will I shop at this place again...
A great variety of electrical supplies at a decent price. The people that work there know their business and can help you find almost anything you may need. They have a wide selections of lamps, electrical supplies and everything in between.

They over charged me, $6.32, for outlet covers that cost $3.62 for the same product at Home Depot a block away. I get that customer service is not their strength but this guy had the worst attitude, beyond the norm. Don't go there if you can help it

G&G is ok. They have what you need but are very expensive. The staff is not very attentive and you can be there longer than you need to. However they are one of the only specialty stores in town.

1. Courteous no-nonsense service when I came here, my burnt out, oddly-large, living-room light bulb in hand
2. Better prices than at Home Depot!
What else could one ask for, for one's household electrical needs!
(N.B. Check the opening hours before coming, especially on weekends - they are shorter than you'd see at stores like Home Depot)

My favorite place for all my electrical needs. Stock everything, no nonsense straight to the point. A+++
G & G Electric is the BEST place to obtain electrical products. They have plenty of inventory and you will not find a product that they haven't heard of or carry. Also, it helps that the staff is always courteous and knowledgeable. If you need help of any sort, feel free to ask for Velez. He is really friendly, knowledge and just a breath of fresh air. Oh and they also opened a store in Harlem too for the Westchester customers!

This place is a mecca for electricians and contractors who specialize in high-end work. They have a large selection of products, knowledgeable staff, and excellent management. Try them first before you go to a chain home improvement place.
If you ever have a problem, ask for Joe, he's wonderful. : )

I dropped off a vintage Jielde lamp with Tudor Electric (now merged with G&G)
They lost the shade, power cord and switch.
They spent 3 months telling me It's in the warehouse
No apologies from Steve.
No attempt at renumeration.
This is (was) a vintage item worth $400 (look up jielde on ebay)
Worse, I have (had) a matching pair. Now, I have one lamp and some broken lamp parts.
Essentially, I dropped of an expensive, rare lamp and got back some broken parts.
I wouldn't trust these guys AT ALL.
What a nasty bunch of people. Walked in got treated nastily. Left. Went to Lighting and Beyond on 14th. But then again I'm not a contractor.

Well said, what a nasty bunch of people. I walked in got treated nastily, too! I'm not a contractor either but no one should bother unless the like a superior i can't possibly help you nor can i be bothered to help you figure out a solution attitude.
I would like to give this company zero stars if I could. They are extremely difficult to work with and over promise and under deliver. I waited on parts for weeks and then found the parts he same day at another store in the Bowery. Stay away if you can.....
