HISTORY

Established in 1871.
South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a startup businessman and community servant. Back then, most everyone needed hay and grain. To reduce costs, Alvin built a railroad siding and purchased by the carload. Deliveries to homes and farms were by horse drawn wagons. Diversifying into heating and cooling, Alvin began offering firewood and ice. He purchased woodlots, built an ice house by Weymouth Great Pond and delivered year round to homes, farms and businesses. When coal replaced wood, Alvin and son-in-law Leonard Bicknell built a modern coal storage plant and used 'motorized' trucks for delivery. As coal powered systems advanced, we introduced 'Central Heating Systems' to the South Shore. Alvin Bicknell, Leonard's son, transitioned from coal to oil by installing many of the first 'automatic' heating systems in the state. Evolving from cutting hay to cutting edge HVAC's, we've served over 1 million South Shore customers. Give us a call! We'll love to serve you too.

ABOUT BUSINESS OWNER

Hi, I'm Laura Bicknell Carbone.

My great-great grandfather made Alvin Hollis successful by treating our customers and employees just like family. Since 1871, we've built on that by keeping our South Shore neighbors safe and comfortable.

Both my grandfather and father felt rewarded by our customers' smiles at their well engineered: heating, cooling and plumbing systems. As fifth generation, I feel that same reward.

Starting part time as a teenager, I've worked in all aspects of our business. In 1991 I received a BS from St. Lawrence University. Since then I've enjoyed serving Alvin Hollis full time, specializing in Sales, Marketing and Customer Service.

In 1995 I started cycling with my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon (together raising almost $800,000 for Dana Farber). I'm on the board of South Shore Chamber of Commerce and a Platinum Member of the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital.

We had our annual furnace maintenance done on October 21.  The technician, Steve, was excellent.  Our furnace has never run so run so beautifully.
Thank you Steve.

Cancelling my appointment last minute with the excuse that they are overbooked. I scheduled my maintenance appointment a month prior and confirmed the day of the appointment that they were coming only for them to cancel an hour after my confirmation.

My second review because the hits just keep coming. We got rid of AH but continue to be haunted.

Bought a house that had been serviced by AH for years -all their slips are by the furnace.

After being really disappointed by their inability to fix our central air last summer (like 5 visits -then a kid fresh out of HVAC school took care of it) our furnace started acting up this summer. Billows of black smoke out of the chimney this August -our house looked and smelled like a locomotive.

A different service company came, told us it hadn't been properly cleaned in years. $350 later it was smoke-free. I'll note again that a stack of AH's service slips are next to the furnace.

Alvin Hollis has provided excellent HVAC/plumbing service since I and my wife purchased our new home in S. Weymouth in the summer of 2018. Their phone is answered by a human being, messages are promptly returned, and their service technicians are thoroughly professional, friendly, and prompt.
Specifically, they installed a Mitsubishi HVAC system in our two-car garage, which has been converted into my workshop. The price was reasonable, the installers worked in tandem with the electricians, and the work was completed in a single day. Not a single trace of the unit's packing materials was left behind, and the the unit is modern, easy to use, and very efficient.
Alvin Hollis has reaffirmed our belief that patronizing a locally owned family business is the way to go.

Alvin Hollis was the third company we consulted for installing central A/C in our 1800s home. The salesperson we met with was extremely knowledgeable, was the only person who arrived with a tape measure to take measurements, and was able to show us exactly where the condenser and evaporator would go. The price was what we were expecting; they were able to install within a few weeks of consulting with us (in August 2020)!

They came out the next day on time. They fixed our AC and didn't over charge us.  Enough said.

Alvin Hollis was part of my home inspection process before purchasing my home.  Their knowledge of my old heating system (much older than myself) made me feel at ease.  Then with their prices and service contract I couldn't say no.  Have had one service done to my system and the two gentleman were on time and very friendly.  Informed me of several things about my radiators that have helped me manage the heat in my home.  There was a drastic visual difference from the before and after of the service.

I would recommend this company to anyone in the area.

I have to adjust my original high rating of Alvin Hollis unfortunately. About two years ago, they installed a new gas heating system for me in record time after my furnace died in the middle of winter. They put together a payment plan for me because I was unable to secure financing. But, they charged me $50/month for the payment plan - which came to over $500 by the time I had paid it all off. In retrospect, that's a rather high interest rate. Plus, I've since learned that they made some oversights in installing my new system, including:
-failure to include an acid neutralizer (high levels of acid entering your plumbing can turn into a serious problem);
-failure to install a check valve on the air vent (to stop air and gas from accumulating in your system);
-failure to install an isolation valve on the expansion tank (that can be manually closed to allow the tank to be drained.);
-the gas line is 3/4 which is undersized (supposed to be 1)
-Last but not least, and this an aesthetic annoyance, ventilation pipes that go through my bathroom are too low and could have been 3- 4 higher. People over 5'8 have to duck when using my downstairs bathroom.

I'm disappointed the town plumbing inspector didn't catch these oversights at the time the new unit was inspected. So now I get to hire a new plumber to fix their sloppy work.

I called this guy to come out and give us an estimate.

His prices are high and he could not answer simple questions. He became arrogant so we just kept quiet until he finally left.

Later we learned that our neighbor had him for some work and reaffirmed our observations -- the guy just is not forthright.

We do not understand any of the positive comments? Very strange!

Anyone know of a decent plumber?

I have used Alvin Hollis for 2 years for oil and just tried them for the AC service.  These guys stay till its done and if jammed with appointments, come back to finish it right.  Extremely courteous, always on time and thorough on repairs.  AC and heating system now working in top shape.  Service agreement is definitely worth it!  Also, the recommended biofuel does seem to be more efficient for the system, less maintenance.

WOW, rude rude rude,
i called for a price on a service contract, they wanted to know if it was oil, yes. is it hot water, steam or some other type, well I don't know. then he wanted to come and look at it. so i wanted to know the price first, he says if its a newer system it could be free. so I said sure, come and look at it. then the guy says, well am I going to get the business? I don't just come out to look at things for nothing. what an asshole. I told him I will call someone else. he hung up on me.

Had an issue with an A/C that was installed 1.5 years ago. Had to call them back because of a freon leak. They resolved quickly with a new unit and worked with me on a reasonable service charge. Very fair and stand up team. Jim was very helpful.

We've been customers of Alvin Hollis for many years. They installed our second central AC unit this past May.  We purchased our first unit through them in 2005 and were very happy with it  so we decided to go with Alvin Hollis for our new one. The techs are always on time, professional and  they explain what needs to be done in detail. We highly recommend Alvin Hollis.

Great new customer service plan. Automatic deliveries haven't let my tank get under 1/4 full, so I haven't been left wondering when they will come. Called them for a service once and the tech was very polite and insightful. Fixed my problem and didn't get charged because of the service plan. Would definitely recommend

Was planning on having them do some plumbing work.  Had scheduled the appointment and discussed in detail the needs and equipment/parts required.  It was all in the system, dotted my i's and crossed my t's.
They called to let us know that the guy was not going to show up til the end of the window and also asked if we needed a particular piece of equipment, the one I had verified with the service department on two separate occasions.
They called 15 minutes before the end of the window to let us know the guy was going to grab lunch and had to return to the warehouse to pick up the part.  Are you kidding me?  First you are going to eat lunch and show up late within a 3 hour window and then you don't even have the part that has been requested.  Ridiculous.

They are expensive and definitely not worth the price based on the poor service.  Would not call reliable, professional or recommend to anyone unless you have no other options and care to hang around your house all morning hoping and praying they show up - assuming it is not lunch time.

This is not the only time we have used them and it has been getting worse each and every time.  So, this will be the last.  Thank god for Angie's List!!!

We used Alvin Hollis for a property we had on the market that required the oil tank to be replaced prior to closing.

I got three quotes from local companies and we decided to go with Alvin Hollis. Alvin Hollis' price for the job was competitive and ultimately we chose to work with them because of how accommodating of our scheduling needs they were. Jim Bicknell who quoted the job was very knowledgable and patient explaining the scope of the word and addressing some other concerns we had about some other issues we had with the property.

When it came to doing the actual work, they got the job on the date specified, at cost estimated, and left the area as clean as before they started.

Everyone we dealt with at Alvin Hollis throughout the entire process was extremely friendly, helpful and professional.

I was a new customer to Alvin Hollis since Oct 2015. At the beginning, they seem very professional and provided up to par services.

Not until recently I decided to stop the auto oil delivery and out of no where questions like interrogation, why would I want to stop it? That is not a wise choice!, We know you need oil that is why it default to auto delivery...etc... I asked to talk to general manager, obviously he isn't around until next year. LOL! The service representative keep insisting that I need to close my account. This is where I got to agree with him.

Glad to end this business relationship.

Sitting in my living room with air conditioning for the first time all summer. Called Alvin Hollis on Monday and was offered two different time slots for a tech to visit. Kenny was here first thing this morning to fix my capacitor and the charge of my system. He was upfront with what the problem was and the time it would take to fix. I have zero experience with HVAC work, but after today, I would 100% call Alvin Hollis for any of my HVAC needs.

I contacted Alvin Hollis over 3 weeks ago for an estimate on a complete heating system and hot water replacement.  I also wanted to install central A/C. They arrived on the agreed upon date and time (reason for the 2nd star).  They spent over an hour here looking over the job.  It would be considered a pretty big job. When they left they said we will send you a proposal in a few days well that was over three weeks ago and I never heard back.... I felt like it was a huge waste of my time because I had to take time off from work.  I am not begging them to send me a proposal.  I guess they never were interested in my business. There are plenty of other places I can get all this work done.... Very disappointed....

When my old gas furnace started having problems that Mass Save's tech said would be best fixed by a replacement, I started researching my options. I knew what I wanted, and had ideas about costs, so as an informed consumer, I was ready to make a decision. Alvin Hollis sent out their engineer/estimator, and I decided that if they gave me a good price on the furnace, I'd expand the job and have air conditioning installed, too.

Not only did the cost come in at a good figure, but they also helped with advice on how to get the most out of the Mass Save program, which made the overall project even more affordable.

The installation went smoothly. It was scheduled at a convenient date and time for me, everyone showed up on time, and the job ran like clockwork. When the furnace installers were ready for the gas line to be moved, the gas fitter was there right on time. When they were ready for power, the electrician showed up. Everything worked as expected, and I got good advice on upgrading my thermostat, which I wanted to do at a later date.

I felt like I was working with professionals who valued my business, and before, during and after the job, communication was first rate.

Replaced an original 1950's monster of an oil heater with a new one.  I shopped around and got quotes from several places for this job, but Alvin Hollis had the best price.  They replaced everything, taught us all we needed to know for our new set-up.  They even went above and beyond:  I was having other work done at the same time, and the other crew left a mess.  The Alvin-Hollis guys helped me clean it up!  They were great!

I wish I could give a zero star to this fraudulent company.
We tried to contact the company owner Laura Carbone and the response from her is their data is correct. So obviously the owner knew and endorsed the frauds.

We closed the house on 24Jan2022. Noticing the house had a broken oil gauge and some furnace water leaking, we called Alvin Hollis for service because previous owner used them. Then Joe (later turned out to be the sales guy) showed up and had my husband sign a contract without explaining what it was for.  As a result, my husband assumed it's for the service call.
It's not until we got the first oil delivery receipt, I called the office asking why. The lady said Joe had us sign a two-year automatic oil delivery contract. OMG!

In total from 28Jan to 14Mar (45days) they claimed they delivered 667.5 gallon (15 gallon per day) for an empty, non-heated house. The house was renovated and not occupied with heat all shut off until 08Apr (My contractors can witness I always wore Canada Goose in the house overseeing their progress, because heat was shutoff and room temperature were no more than 50F)
We terminated the contract on 17 Mar officially, realizing their oil quantity was way off from common sense perspective (my other house, ~2000 sqft used 460 gallon in total from Oct to Apr with room temperature kept to 70F, i.e. 2.6 gallon per day).

We will take legal actions against this fraudulent company, and will keep the community posted.

Appreciate Bonnie the office managers response but they did agree to replace the flange, it's appreciated they finally did, and not appreciated that it has been such a hassle. We never complained about the charge as there was none, we complained they never did it and agreed to as part of the overall project.

They also did not tell us that it would be better to do the wall units but did present them in the course of the pitch/bid. It was simply unlucky that we chose the ceiling instead and we never held them accountable for that as it wasn't their fault. To pretend that they guessed ahead of time we would run into that is disingenuous at best and it wasn't even a complaint. Not that I expect the office manager who was present for any of it to know what did or did not happen but definitely dishonest to portray it as we insisted on wall units. Still not sure what that has do to with simple finish work from their own job such as spakling and covering up their holes.

We were on a service plan w/ another provider and we were very unhappy with them (like, it was shocking how bad they were). Luckily, we were able to have Alvin Hollis come when we were having issues and they assessed our furnace's condition (which we knew needed to be either repaired or replaced). Here is what I liked:
1. It was easy to get an appt
2. When the technician came to assess the furnace they were able to clearly explain the issues they found with the furnace (it really needed replacing). The next step was having TJ come to look at our system and come up w/ a plan for replacement
3. TJ was prompt and thorough getting back to us and all the work was outlined clearly. We wanted to get other opinions/estimates so it took us a while to get back to him. There was no pressure on us in the interim to move forward with them.
4. We ended up going w/ Alvin Hollis for the installation b/c their price was fair and the plan made sense. We were able to schedule the work quickly and it went in w/o any problems. We also liked that the contract was emailed to us so it was easy to keep track of the proposed work to be done and costs involved. We were also able to research the unit online before being installed (to make sure we didn't get another one w/ a terrible rating like the one we had!).
5. We had a technician come to assess our central air conditioning system and he walked through the whole house w/ my husband to assess the ducts, filters, thoroughly examined the units outside, etc. He was able to address my husband's questions about energy efficiency. The tech found our a/c units were low on coolant. At 4 PM on a Friday the tech drove to get coolant b/c he didn't have any. It took him quite a long time to get back but we were really impressed he went out of his way at his last appt of the week to get that done for us - w/o any added fees.

So far we are happy with the service and will continue to use Alvin Hollis.

We used Alvin Hollis as our oil supplier for the first three winters in our house. We never had any problems with oil delivery. It always showed up before we needed it. We also had a maintenance contract for our furnace/AC, so someone showed up once a year to service things and vacuum out the ductwork. We also needed to use them to repair a broken AC which they did promptly and for a reasonable price. The repairman even took some time to explain how we could best adjust our thermostat to avoid overtaxing our AC.

When we decided to convert our house to gas heat, I discovered that Alvin Hollis also does plumbing and gas conversions. I requested that someone come out to give us a quote. Gordon came out within a few days and talked to us about the project. He took notes about what we wanted and advised us on our options. Shortly after that he sent us a quote via email.

Due to some confusion with Columbia Gas and some indecisiveness on our part, we had to go back and forth with Gordon several times over the course of many months. He was always very responsive. His quotes were itemized so we could see where the costs were coming from. (I did not experience this level of responsiveness and detail with the other company I went to for a quote).

We finally settled on a gas-fired furnace with a humidifier, a 40-gallon water heater, a new thermostat, and the removal of our old oil tank. Half of the cost of the project was due up front.

Once we had the gas line, scheduling the actual install took a few weeks. (A cold snap had caused a lot of emergency repair jobs.) Chris, who is in charge of scheduling, called me on a Monday and said they had enough guys to do the entire project the next day, with the inspector coming out the day after that. He advised me to call Columbia Gas to schedule them to hang the meter ASAP. (This was good advise because even with the advanced warning, Columbia Gas couldn't get someone out until Friday.)

The actual install went fine. The workmen showed up promptly and completed the job in one day. There appeared to be some confusion about how much pipe they needed vs what they had, but they worked something out. By the end of the day we had all our new equipment installed and the oil tank removed. They also re-ran the water output pipes to our sump pump, stating that the pipes that had been there previously were not angled correctly and had standing water in them. They left the basement clean as well.

The next day the inspector came. He made a point of telling my husband how impressed he was with the work. He pointed out how they had run pipes around the beams of the house rather than cut through them. He said it was a pleasure to look at Alvin Hollis's work.

Actually getting our gas turned on was a bit of a fiasco due to Columbia Gas, but throughout that process the people at Alvin Hollis were very supportive, saying they would come out late on a Friday night or over the weekend to start up our equipment. Fortunately, that ended up not being necessary, but we did get someone out the week after to tune the furnace.

When we received the invoice for the second half of the bill, it included printouts of the rebates we're eligible for with some of the information already filled in. That's really above and beyond service in my opinion.

At this point, we're very happy with our new equipment and very glad we went with Alvin Hollis to do the conversion. And we're glad we can continue to use them for maintenance going forward. I would definitely recommend them.

Hard to beat their service! Over the past fourteen months  Alvin Hollis replaced my boiler with a high eficency System 2000 and then in November my under deck oil tank. Both jobs were in confined spaces. They arrived when promised and when they were done you would never know they had been here.
I am now a new oil customer using sulfur free bioheat fuel.

We recently had  air conditioning units added to our house- one for the part of the house that already had vents and  a Mitsubishi ductless unit for an addition.  We are pleased with he results and found the entire process easy and professional.  The initial evaluator was great, the installation efficient and when promised and the cost reasonable.  We just use the units when it is very humid out and they kick in quickly.  So far it looks like the cost of running these two units adds about $3.00 per day to our electric bill- a bargain when it is humid out. We are very pleased with the service and professionalisms of the Alvin Hollis company. Out of all the people that solicited our business for oil, the VP of Alvin Hollis was the best. She was also present for our home inspection, courtesy of Tiger home inspections. We liked their maintenance package and the 2 years discount. Everyone from the guy pumping the oils to the mechanic and even the survey gal, were very personable and helpful.

When our 8-year old Amana central a/c unit broke in early August on one of the hottest days of this crazy New England, drought-y summer of 2016, faced with 4 cranky, sweaty kids (including a newborn which I had no choice but to snuggle and as a result, got the two of us even more sweaty!) we mildly panicked and unwisely chose the cheap route: we called a company in a far off town hoping they could fix the issue at a cheaper rate. We really should've called Alvin Hollis (local, family owned company) first. They were able to replace our unit (Carrier, a better brand than the Amana we had before we think) and fix our humidifier (also something we had done on a cheap a few years ago) within 48 hours during a heat wave week when other companies weren't able to come out for 4-5 days. We know that if anything goes wrong with our a/c, we'll have top notch service and response time.

We recently had a Mitsubishi split system installed in our three story circa 1870 home that we had been cooling with numerous window mounted AC units. Prior to the installation of the new split system, we had a number of questions and concerns including preserving the architectural character of our home as well as potential problems with how the electrical and refrigeration lines would be run. Jim Bicknell, who was our sales contact at Alvin Hollis, walked us though each step, offered great ideas and feedback and addressed our concerns. The team that showed up for installation was personable and very communicative during the entire process and discussed and offered great solutions to a couple of issues that came up during installation which were inevitable in an older house. Upon completion, they did a thorough clean up and helped us understand the operation of our new system and stayed until we were completely satisfied.
Overall, even though the Mitsubishi system came at a premium price point, we feel we received what we paid for and were extremely happy with communication and installation given us by Alvin Hollis.

We hired Alvin Hollis to install a new gas boiler, central air conditioning and mini split unit. We selected them because of the thouroughness of their proposal and reviews. We also grew to respect their expertise. I highly recommend Alvin Hollis.

At the beginning of Every single heating season (for 5 years now) this company leaves an 18 unit apartment building in Dorchester (a system that they recommended and installed) without heat and hot water for days. It's been 3 days now and they say they can't come out for another 2.  So that's No hot water or heat for at least 5 days just like every year. As usual they will follow up my complaint with excuses and lies but the reality is this 2 man unscrupulous outfit should be ashamed of themselves and the lack of service provided to their customers.
Not reliable, not loyal, not good at what they do.

Our oil burner cracked the Friday of (a very cold) President's Day weekend. After searching for someone to come and look at it, and give us a price on installing a new one - Alvin Hollis returned my message and arrived on the holiday.
The installation was done 3 days later and we couldn't be happier with the service that Alvin Hollis provided. The team is courteous, professional and safely follows all Covid protocol.
We now have secured a service contract with Alvin Hollis and are very pleased with our decision.

I've been using Alvin Hollis since I bought my first house in 2001.  They have installed multiple items including central air, central humidifier, hot water heater and two ductless heat pump systems.  I have also used them for multiple repairs for various things.  The work is always done professionally and on time.  From a price standpoint, they are not the cheapest but they are not the most expensive.  They consistently provide top notch service to me so I will keep going back.

The most recent service I used them for was in April 2014 where I had a new heat pump system installed in my sunroom.  The installer did an awesome job dealing with a tough setup in my room and was able to suggest a change to what i had originally planned. That suggestion prevented a significant amount of clean up work that would have been required if we followed the orginal plan.  I was very happy with the end result.

I was in need of a new Heat Pump System (heat/ac) for my townhouse. I contacted two companies and left voicemails stating the reason for my call and neither company returned my phone call. I contacted another company that did return my call and I spoke with the owner-he asked me to send him pictures of my old unit (which I did immediately) and I never heard back from him either. I was confused as to why he would even need to see photos of the old system in the first place as I was replacing everything. To me, a company that does not return a phone call-especially for a job that is in the range of 9-10k-is a huge red flag. I then called another company who sent out a Sales Technician who looked at the job and after he was finished sat down with me and wrote out a proposal on the spot. That, to me, was a bit concerning as I thought he would tell me that he would be sending me a proposal in a few days as I had not expected it to be a handwritten one that was not given full consideration. The proposal was not very detailed and did not include new lines from the inside unit to the outside unit. I questioned him on that and he stated that the old lines were fine and could just be blown out.  The proposal was good for 30 days. In the meantime, I kept researching for another company to get at least one additional comparative quote. A friend recommended Alvin Hollis-I was reluctant to contact Hollis as I thought they would be too expensive; but, I contacted them anyway. I'm so glad I did. Obviously, they returned my call and things only got better from there. 1.) The Sales Technician arrived on time for the initial review of the job. 2.) He, as I expected, stated I would receive a fully outlined and detailed proposal within a few days (which I did). 3.) The proposal was typed and listed every component of the job, including new lines from the interior unit to the exterior unit. 4.) The total cost was significantly less than the proposal from the other company. 5.) The Install Technicians arrived on time the day of the installation. 6.) The installation was seamless. 7.) The installers were very respectful and careful of my finished basement and left it as they had found it. 8.) The installers went over everything with me after the job was completed-ie: How to use the new thermostat, etc... Hollis is a team of professionals who present themselves as professional, complete professional work, and who (very important to me) do what they say they will do and do it when they say it will be done. Finally, there were no surprises. Everything happened as promised at the price that was stated. I suggest anyone that is looking for any service Hollis provides to contact them. I am very pleased with Hollis and look forward to hiring them in the future for all my plumbing and heating needs. Rating: 5 Stars.

Their customer service sucks. They could care less. Twice they screwed up and wouldn't accept blame. I told them that I wanted only 100 gallons because I was moving what did they do they filled the tank. The slip clearly said 100 gallons. Another time I went away and when I came back my tank had been filled I didn't order it and the slip again said call customer before you go. I again called and got no where. You would think they would at least apologize. They told me to just close the account. In this  day and age most companies only have customer service to give you think they would care a little more especially this one who charges higher prices for oil than anyone on the south shore. I wouldn't recommend them at all.

I have been a customer with Alvin Hollis since moving to Weymouth in 2012. I have nothing but good things to say about Alvin Hollis. For the last few years we have been heating with a boiler from the 1960s! Alvin Hollis had serviced the unit annually with no issues.

I recently took the plunge and decided to replace my boiler and hot water heater with a new, more efficient unit. I worked with Colin, an Engineer with Alvin Hollis, and he couldn't have been a nicer guy. Super patient and knowledgable about all the different types of heating systems. Colin provided me with three options that varied in price and design. Prior to going with Alvin Hollis for the boiler replacement, I had the project quoted by another local heating and air company just to make sure the price was competitive. The quote came in thousands higher than Alvin Hollis. I was amazed.

On the day the boiler was replaced the technicians arrived at 8am. They were gone by 4! Totally cleaned up, removed all the old equipment and the new unit running strong. I was really surprised how efficient the team was. The crew did a fantastic job.

We are really happy we chose Alvin Hollis. We would strongly recommend them for their honesty and superior customer service.

Have been an oil delivery and maintenance customer for 7 years with great results - the tank is always full and the annual maintenance is proactive.  This summer, our (very old) AC compressor quit.  The replacement estimate process was excellent - we needed to resize the compressor and upgrade to the latest refrigerant, and Jim was flexible, responsive, and took the time to explain the necessary changes.  Two price checks confirmed the proposal was the best value, and the work was completed on time with no issues.  Great work.

We were looking for someone to do an inspection, regular maintenance, and oil delivery. They fit the bill and have been pleasant every step of the way. I'd recommend them to my family if they had oil heat.

my original review was excellent-but now I have to revise that. I have had them out to my home more times than I can count. after a very expensive purchase of a new furnace and new indirect hot water tank things have NEVER worked right. Is it normal to not have hot water 4 or 5 times a year?  I get the same story-they will come out and fix it-which is ALL I want. Is it too much to ask to accomplish that? Apparently so.

Had no heat inDecember so called them as they annually service the gas heat/AC unit.
They came out after midnight and got it started.   It turns out the blower had gone and they quoted prices to replace part or whole system as it is already @7 yrs old.  I opted to replace part and everything works great.  No pressure to buy whole new system but glad to have option as nothing lasts very long these days.  Also used them @7 yrs ago when they  did complete bathroom remodels and was very satisfied then as well.  Even the town inspector seemed relieved to know they had done the work which gave me an extra vote of confidence.   Always polite, clean and easy to do business with!!

No complaints. Great customer service, always pleasant and responsive when I called with a billing question. Deliveries always on time. Service techs were always polite, on time and knowledgeable. My only comment would be I wish they took credit cards for oil payments so I could get the credit card points. Overall I've had a great experience with Alvin Hollis.

I needed a furnace installed relatively quick at my elderly mom's house. Everybody I dealt with including Jim who came out to make recommendations on a new system, to Al and Jerry who installed the new unit, were courteous, prompt, and made sure questions were answered. Highly recommend Alvin Hollis.

I had a minor leak in my basement so I called my oil company, Alvin Hollis, to come check it out. It turned out that my water heater needed replacing. I have oil heat and gas hot water and have been considering a conversion to gas for sometime now. I decided that there is no better time than the present to do this as I already needed a new water heater. The technician that was at my house said he would have somebody call me later that afternoon or the following day. Three days later, while my water heater continued to leak, I had yet to hear back from Alvin Hollis. I contacted another plumbing service, Blue Bear plumbing, who sent someone out the same day and scheduled the oil conversion the following day. Because of Alvin Hollis' lack of urgency and concern for their customers problem they lost a significant amount of business. I have been in Alvin Hollis customer for many years and am very disappointed in the way that they handled this situation.

Alvin Hollis came out for our home inspection along with Tiger Home Inspections and Laura Carbone inspected the oil tank and looked over the Furnace. We had concerns about the unit so we followed up with Alvin Hollis and Jim Bicknell came to the house. In short we needed to replace the AC unit. Due to the size and age of the furnace the new AC unit could not be attached. If it wasn't for Jim and his knowledge we would have been in a pickle once we closed on the home and had to eat the cost of a new oil furnace. Being new homeowners no one wants unexpected costs. Jim saved us with his knowledge and forward thinking. Everything this was replaced and the crew was very professional and courteous.

Laura has kept in touch with us and got us scheduled for oil deliveries and service on our equipment moving forward. So one less thing to worry about!

I would highly recommend Alvin Hollis for all your HVAC and plumbing needs. Call with confidence and know they are your one stop shop for all your needs!

oil delivery is fine. a bit pricey. my issue is their sales team that tried to rob me. insisted I needed a new furnace costing 11k. ended up replacing a part that cost me 2k using a different company. I actually don't trust them now for that type of work.

We have had a terrible experience with this company, and one that keeps getting worse.  They installed a boiler in our home two years ago.  This year, the vent damper they sold and installed broke.  They came and replaced it, and tried to charge us for both the part and labor, despite the fact that it was under warranty.  It broke again, two months later.  They again replaced it, and now are insisting on charging us again, for the same part and labor, that they have now failed twice to properly supply and install.  We tried to submit a negative review on their website, and it was blocked.  So while you will notice that their website contains only positive reviews, the reason appears to be that they refuse to post negative reviews and simply cherry pick the positive ones to make the company look good.  A very sketchy operation, to say the least.

I have used Alvin Hollis for 5 years now and I can't say enough good things about them. Last week I finally had to replace my boiler and a skilled technician got right on it and finished the job quickly. From the phone answerer to the technicians, all really know their stuff. Very professional, prompt, easy to do business with. I have recommended them to several friends and others in my condo building.

In December, when my 20-year-old gas furnace broke down, I was confronted with the awful news that both the furnace and our 17-year-old central AC needed to be replaced.  While Columbia Gas provided a short-term repair to keep our heat up and running, I went through the due diligence of securing project quotes from three contractors to remove the old equipment and install new high-efficiency units eligible for Mass Save rebates and a 0% interest Heat Loan.  It was here that Alvin Hollis Company won me over above the others with their timely response, thoroughness, attention to detail, and sensitivity to our needs.  From the initial evaluation, including complete measurement of our home's heating, cooling, and venting requirements through to removal of old equipment and installation of everything new, the entire process was conducted smoothly, cheerfully, professionally, and expertly.  Once I had my Heat Loan in hand, this was all accomplished in a timely manner by a team of three installers and an electrician in one day within six hours from 8:30am-2:30pm.   I could not be more satisfied with the experience.

Worst customer service just spent in total $8190. on a furnace and oil tank. furnace has some serious zoning problems blows cold in one room but roasts in another had out several times to fix never had this problem before. But the worst problem is the oil tank . Gordon came out measured and said no problem we'll take of the rest. Came home that night load bearing column was cut removed because they were to lazy to cut the old tank and then lied in front of me saying they didn't touch it . filed claim with  BBB and the attorney general.  .
Had to filed in small claims court to get it resolved . James Bicknell finally decided to send a carpenter out to replace the post with a steel lalley column to swept thing under the carpet. Don't do business with these scammers they will cut corners and lie

Alvin quoted me a price for oil. When the delivery came in it was MORE than what she quoted. When I called her on it she fought me tooth and nail and said the price went up. When you quote someone a price then that's the price. You don't try and slide it by the customer then continue to battle with them tooth and nail about it when they call and try to work it out. Everyone else's price was moving down while there was moving up? I feel she tried to take advantage and hoped I wouldn't notice when the bill came. So needless to say I paid the whole bill at the price we originally rested on.
They signed me up for a contract prior to all of this. So at this point they delivered some expensive oil and came to my house for ten minutes.
After they couldnt stick to a price they quoted I decided I didn't want to do business with them. If you quote a price then that's the price. I do sales myself and if I give a price and then go back on it my customers will not have it.
Now they want me to pay $300. for someone to come into my house for 10 minutes.
I called to discuss and they hung up on me and sent me to a collection agency. So I have called a few times and tried to work this out and instead of talking they hung up on me.
So now in this time of crisis due to the virus they sent me to a collection agency. Times are tough and everyone is trying to keep afloat. This is an unnecessary issue that only compounds the shifting crazy world we are living in.
