Peter McCarthy Electric

When several of our outlets and one of our light fixtures stopped functioning, we did some personal troubleshooting hoping it was an easy fix we could handle ourselves. This was not the case, and nothing we did seemed to help the electrical issue, so it was time to call an electrician. Yelp led me to each out to Peter and he was able to fit us in with just a few days notice. He also gave a very thorough explanation for what the issue could be and what the job could look like for a building as old as ours.

Price was a big concern for us particularly because there was no way to know for sure what the issue was and how involved the repair would be. Peter told us at most, it would likely be 6 hours, but fortunately he was able to finish everything in a total of only 3 hours!

He was also on time (few minutes early), courteous (took off his shoes and put down drop cloths), very friendly and answered all of my questions by explaining what the issues were and on the progress of the repair.

I would highly recommend Peter if you're in Hyde Park, and I'll definitely be turning to him for any future electrical work!

Peter did an outstanding job re-wiring our Hyde Park apartment.  He is especially good on older properties where there are messes to be cleaned up.  Many electricians do not have the expertise to do that kind of work.   He's also tidy and a nice guy besides.

Peter installed a new electrical 240v line for an outside waterproof outlet to our second floor condo. He worked off an existing line that ran to our air conditioning unit. It only took a day to install, and about a week total after the initial quote. Peter was clear to describe what he was doing and provides a five year warranty on his work! YAY!

This man is honestly the best! I bought a new home this past October and he's my go to for all things electrical. Whenever there is an issue, he explains what's happening thoroughly to make sure I understand how the problem occurred and what is being done to fix it.

He's also great at consulting via phone or text so that if the issue is small, I can handle it myself and save some money.

He's punctual and consistent, and just all around great.

Peter is so great! I was having trouble wiring a ceiling fan and peter helped resolve the issue immediately. I also had trouble with a broken lamp and no only did he fix it immediately but picked it up and delivered it to my house. If you are in Hyde Park looking for an electrician I cannot recommend a better person for the job!

HE ONLY WORKS IN HYDE PARK, DON'T CALL HIM FOR ANOTHER NEIGHBORHOOD. But he's great, communicative and responsive, honest, goes above and beyond. We had to remove old electrical equipment from the side of our new house and while he was doing it he recognized another issue up there and resolved that for us as well. Very skilled and capable. We also are observing strict social distancing right now, which Peter was happy to respect--we did everything over phone and email.

Peter is my go-to in Hyde Park for all my electrical service. I've called him for both large jobs - rewiring a breaker box in an old condo - and small jobs - installing smart switches in a newer unit - and everything in-between. He's skilled, personable, and efficient. I'll continue to call him anytime my wires get crossed, and I highly recommend you do the same.

Electricians are notorious for not returning calls, missing appointments and flipping a coin on what the problem might be. Peter McCarthy and his crew are far from the average electrician. I emailed Peter and told him I needed brand new service (200 amp) installed. I got lucky because although I live on the north side and his biz does not head this way due to traffic, parking and tickets, he said that one of his crew lives in my neighborhood and would be able to stop by and assess the situation. I was very happy! Matt called me and showed up when he said .. on the money! He looked at everything, explained the work in detail so that I could understand and assured me that it could be done before Thanksgiving.

When the work was to begin the weather was not on our side. The job consists of work inside and outside the house. Matt, said he would do all the work needed inside while it was raining and complete all the work outside, the following when the forecast called for clear skies.

When the dust cleared, the lights were all working, the new panel in the basement looked extra clean, the outside meter and pipes looked flawless and it looked like nobody had even been in the area of where the work was done. Matt swept the floor and tidied up the existing wires/cables.

All the paperwork, permit and biz side of the job went without a problem. Peter is a sharp and smart guy. Cool Irish dude!

During the city inspection the in inspector said this is a neat job. I totally agree with him. BTW the quote I received from another electrician here on Yelp was was $100 higher for 100 amp service than the price I paid for 200 amp service. YES! {pumps fist}

My only complaint is that Matt would not accept any food, water, soda or beer from us. That's a big no no when you enter a Latin household. We make anything an excuse to have a party, dinner or a drink...ha

Professional - friendly - just overall awesome electrician.  He only works in Hyde Park however - but as long as I live here, he'll be our go to electrician.  We had a short in our electrical line due to some rust and water - shorted out our gate, intercom and lighting.  Peter quickly diagnosed the issue - was able to schedule the next day for us and charged us a reasonable rate.  He noticed a couple of other issues while doing the work and promptly provided a quote on the follow up work.  Top notch professional - great guy - can't say enough positive things about him.

A service provider that went out of his way so that I wouldn't have to hire him.

I thought my apartment had a complex electrical short and every electrician I spoke with wanted at least $200 just to discuss the problem.

Everyone besides Peter McCarthy that is.

While he was running between other jobs he called, listened to what I knew about the problem and quickly recommended a remedy I could try on my own.

Sure enough his solution worked and my electricity was back up and running.

The next time I have a problem he is the ONLY electrician I will call.

Pete does a good job, knows his stuff and has a great attitude. He's a little high on cost, slow to call back but he shows up when he says he will. You might have to call him twice though.

On a Friday morning both bedrooms in my condo stopped having electricity. That night I was having some people over and with no electricity in the bedrooms, I also had no home internet!
After much frustration, I called Peter. He was at the gym but came over right after. This was at 5:30 on a Friday! He was quick and replaced the breaker easily. He took off his shoes and was very courteous. The whole thing took about 20 minutes and I was so thankful to have someone available and close. I'll definitely use him again.

We've used Peter a couple of times now on our vintage condo and he's fantastic. We still have original cloth wires so when we do work, we need a professional and Peter is great. He's always very communicative and responsive -- even coming out last-minute on a Sunday night! He does really great work and is just generally a nice guy. I'd recommend him in a heartbeat for anyone with electrical work.

We received several quotes to install new recessed lighting and track lighting in our kitchen. Peter's quote was on par or better than the estimates others provided. He's a local guy, does all the work himself, and had great Yelp reviews so we decided to move forward with him. We are thrilled with the results. Peter does excellent work--our kitchen looks great--and he went above and beyond by returning to fix a light after our ceiling sustained some water damage from our neighbor upstairs. We are extremely happy and satisfied with Peter McCarthy Electric!  We first met him three years ago when we needed wiring for additional recessed lighting in our kitchen and living rooms.   I called Peter McCarthy (by way of Angie's List) and got an appointment for him to come and give us an estimate. We were in a hurry to finish this work as we were also doing a lot of other larger projects in preparation for the arrival of our twins, which could be started only after we finished the electrical end of things.

I gave Peter five stars right on that first day when he showed up not just on time but ahead of time. I explained to Peter about what needed to be done.  While talking, I realised that he was completely booked for the next month with large projects in Hyde Park.  However, Peter agreed to start the work within two days, in between projects and only asked that we be a tad flexible since he and his team would have a sporadic schedule. Peter and his associate, Matt, made sure that the work was done in a timely manner. They were extremely professional, respectful and left the areas clean with no hint that they had been there!

After they finished that project, we had some other smaller ones that arose throughout the years.  I emailed them again without any hesitation and most recently a few weeks ago to add an outlet in our children's closet to keep things as cord-free as possible in their room.  Peter and his team are consistently a pleasure to work with and fair in pricing...

I have had a lot of good but a few bad experiences with my other contractors during several remodeling processes throughout the years.  But there is no doubt one can definitely learn about professionalism from Peter McCarthy Electric.  Thank you Peter and your team!  I always glowingly refer you guys to our neighbours/friends for any electrical needs!

Don't bother calling if you are looking to get work done outside of Hyde Park.

Peter is not only very helpful and great at what he does, he is an amazingly nice guy. I would recommend him to ANYONE! I will call him for any problem I have in the future!

We just moved into our new condo in Uptown and needed a little electrical work done.  We needed 2 plugs installed, a vanity light for the bathroom (can you believe a bathroom without vanity lights?), and 4 dimmers throughout the place.  Not only to Peter get back to me right away, but he scheduled a FREE estimate visit to my home the very next day.  The technician's name was Matt and he was super nice and courteous.  We got the estimate the very next day and I thought was pretty average.  Not super cheap, not really expensive... just what I was expecting really.  The best thing about it was that I got a flat fee quote.  That meant no lazy technicians milking the clock... they get paid the same whether they are there for 2 hours or all day.  We scheduled the work to be done a few days after that.  

Matt arrived to my place on time and ready to work.  He was here for many hours and didn't even stop for a lunch break.  The work was done perfectly and he didn't leave any mess behind at all!  I figured out the hourly out of what I paid and it worked out to $95/hour... and that INCLUDED supplies!  Very reasonable, I think.

Peter actually followed up with me the very next morning with a phone call to make sure I was happy with the work.  

I couldn't speak more highly of them.  VERY satisfied.  I'll be recommending them to all of my friends.  Great work!

Oh, and the 3 other electricians I contacted couldn't even be bothered to reply to me yet... it's been a week and a half...

Well, Peter McCarthy never returned my calls.

Peter is the epitome of a professional.  He is knowledgable, communicative, and skilled.  Peter resolved the issue in a timely manner and was transparent about the charges.  

Like a fellow reviewer, my apartment is 100 years old and locating an electrician willing and capable to make repairs is no easy task.  I am holding onto Peter's contact information and have no reservations is sharing it with my friends!

Although I haven't had the chance to use Peter McCarthy Electric for a repair, I'm giving him 5 stars based on the conversation I had with him last week.  After finding him on Yelp, I called for an estimate on some problems we were having with our ceiling fans.  He called me back & spoke with me for some time regarding possible causes & solutions for the issue.  He thoroughly explained everything & couldn't have been nicer.  Unfortunately I had just spoken with another electrician & scheduled an appointment with them, which is the only reason I didn't go with Peter.

A few days later I received a letter from him thanking ME for my time! Wow!  If I ever need more electrical work done, I'll definitely call Peter.

I finally got the chance to work with Peter McCarthy---I say finally, because I had seen his name and his work recommended for years---and the experience lived up to the stellar recommendations. Hired Pete today for my intermittent power issue during days of high wind.  Although we were not able to pinpoint the problem becuase there was no wind by the time he arrived, he did what he could to try and fix it and took the time to explain everything that might have been the cause.  Let's hope what he did resolved it.  Will definitely hire him again for my future electrical needs

So far so good! Peter came out and gave us an hour of his time - we're trying to figure out some wiring issues in our building. It is CLEAR that old buildings are something he specializes in. My SUPER picky husband, without hesitation, hired him to do some work next week. Will update after work is done.

Found positive feedback online, so asked him to come by to help quote a subpanel addition in our older building. Peter was great!
Not only did he spend an hour here walking me through all the possibilities, he was more than happy to help me figure out ballpark costs (which were very reasonable), he also answered all sorts of questions I had about our building's electrical system and what if's I had about upcoming electrical projects that took our board months to get answers for.

I needed a competent and reliable electrician to update the electrical wiring in a 100-year-old 1 bedroom condo unit that I had just purchased in Hyde Park.  I chose Peter due to the positive ratings on Yelp, and after he came in for an assessment of the unit, I had a chance to speak with him and ask him questions about the project. I have no knowledge whatsoever in anything electrical-related, so I was very wary of being duped. Peter turned out to be everything I looked for in an electrician, and I would gladly recommend his services.

Peter explained everything that needed to be done clearly, and kept me updated on the process from start to finish. At one point, there was an issue with the discovery of my electrical wiring being intermingled with a neighbor's such that part of their electrical usage was charged to my unit. Peter was diplomatic about the best way to address the situation without ruffling feathers in the condo (not knowing whether the intermingling was intentional). He took care to communicate with the management of the building before taking any actions, and I'm very happy with the tactful way in which he addressed this issue.

I am sitting in my home now that has the new wiring, which is not necessarily something one appreciates until something goes wrong.  Nothing has gone wrong, and I don't anticipate there to be any issues, but I know if anything comes up, I won't hesitate to give Peter a call or text, and he would be quick to respond, just as he has during the rewiring process.  I'm happy with the work that Peter has done in the apartment.

I had another electrician cancel on me the day of my appointment. So I called up Pete to see if he could accommodate me since I had taken the day off for my original appointment.  He called over to his team on the field and had one of them come to my place after hours, around 8pm.  He came and promptly got the work done perfectly.  Pricing was honest and fair, and I won't soon forget the favor Pete and his team did for me.

I recently had a fairly extensive electrical short in my house.  I soon found out that whoever did the original wiring, did not do the work up to code, and everything was a mess to figure out.  Pete was up to the task and got the job done.  I would highly recommend him to anyone with electrical problems. He knows his stuff and he's also very honest.

peter is probably the most attentive person i've worked with.  i knew where he was at all times and communicated well both via email and text.  we had another person come out at one point and he couldn't figure out the issues...Peter came and within 15 min the issue was fixed.

I needed some advice on an old home that I'm buying and when I spoke with Peter over the phone he went above and beyond to help me out.  He answered all of my questions, gave me very good advice, and really took time with me to help me understand the situation and at no time did I feel like he was selling anything.  Peter is obviously a man that is passionate about electrical systems.  It was a pleasure to speak with him and if do end up needing electrical work done, Peter will definitely be at the top of my list.

Peter helped and didn't even need to come to my house!  I had some problems with the electrical outlets in my bathrooms and when I described it in an email he quickly deduced that it my be as simple as resetting the circuit breaker. Duh! on my part but really appreciated his ability to resolve this without charging for a visit.  Previously used him for a stuck bulb in my stove and he patiently fixed it so I can easily replace it myself now.

About a year ago we had Peter McCarthy Co. wire in a new dishwasher, repair several electrical outlets that weren't properly grounded, and upgrade several kitchen-area outlets to GFCI receptacles.  He and his crew did excellent, timely, and professional work; and Peter took the time to explain everything clearly and patiently.   I recently called him about another electrical issue, and he took the time to help me sort out the problem over the phone.  He's a good Hyde Park guy who knows the neighborhood and its buildings well.  Highly recommended.

Peter came out to trouble shoot a short circuit in my 100 year old condo.  He was easy to schedule and punctual.  Peter worked through the problem quickly and found the source of my short circuit in no time.  His fees are very fair and he offered less expensive options for the repair.  I will definitely hire him for additional electrical work I need in my apartment.  I highly recommend him.

I can't say enough about Peter. After my HVAC broke down during the hottest week of the summer and I was told it was 'electrical', I called every electrician on Yelp, to no avail. Everyone is too busy flipping houses, it seems. He was the last one I talked to and he heard the desperation in my voice, so he agreed to come out to see what he could do a few days later. Another shady electrician called back and said he could come sooner but thankfully I waited for Peter. He's incredibly thorough and detail-oriented, and wound up going on a bit of an investigatory mission and uncovered some untruths with the HVAC company, documenting everything on video. Ultimately, the issue was not electrical, meaning I had called him out for nothing. He felt so bad he gave me a discount....but his hard work and investigatory skills got me my money back with the HVAC company. Peter earned his spot at the top of my fridge as my #1 trusted vendor. His honesty and professionalism was so refreshing. And today I even got a handwritten Thank You card in the mail, replete with an inside joke from our appointment! So nice. He clearly values his customers and pays attention to the little things. You can't go wrong with Peter....best service provider experience I've ever had, hands down.

Peter came out to change out 3 light fixtures for me and did a fabulous job!  I live in older building with of course older wiring and he was very knowledgeable and able to work with wiring I had and still hang the fixtures in right way so safe but still looked beautiful.  Very happy with his work, professionalism and a great great guy to boot!  Thanks again peter!

Peter McCarthy is an incredible professional, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.  He is responsive to phone calls/emails, and he was quick to work us in to his schedule when we wanted repairs done quickly.  He is incredibly knowledgeable about all things electrical and will patiently explain anything to you -- even if you are a novice.  Prices are reasonable and work is done on time as scheduled.  I would not hesitate to recommend or use his electrical company again.

I recently hired Peter to install a simple pendant light in my dining room, upon recommendation of a friend of mine.

Even though the project was small, Peter arranged to stop by and give me an estimate on the installation, as well as to answer my questions about related electrical projects I wanted to complete.  During the installation, his crew gladly answered my questions and were quick and efficient.  I was particularly impressed that they didn't have to cut any new holes in my ceiling or walls.  

I plan to hire Peter again as soon as possible to complete my other electrical projects.  He does good work at a fair price and is helpful and responsive.  He has my highest recommendation.

Peter fixed a problem at our home with speed, efficiency and understanding.  Not only did he repair wiring to the garage of our home, but he also explained every step as he did so.  While we hope that no further electrical problems will arise in our home, we would use Peter as our first choice to correct them if they should.

We wanted the job done professionally and done right the FIRST time, so we hired Peter's company. My husband had used his services before in his old co-op building, and knew we could count on him. His men came over and very efficiently in one afternoon fixed a variety of problems in our rehabbed condo, such as installing new outlets and updating the closet lights up to code. Even if I moved out of Hyde Park, I'd make sure that Peter continued on as our electrician. I'm delighted that other reviews I've read of his work describe how great he is;  total agreement on that--especially about how helpful he likes to be. But he's also really quick witted with a great sense of humor--you enjoy his company as well as appreciating his work!

Peter came out last weekend on the same day that we called him.  He was on time, friendly and easy-going.  He looked at and fixed some broken wires, gave us advice on the most economical solution for our smoke alarm, and looked at some light fixtures we bought in Dubai that need hardware.  For all of this, he charged us nothing and gave us two Tootsie rolls!  Good as his word, he sent us an estimate for the light fixtures a couple of days later and a letter making specific references to things we had talked about with him.

Peter and his crew are great.  They are extremely knowledgeable, reliable, professional, and courteous.  That's a lot more than I can say about a lot of other contractors and repair guys!  The fact that Peter will get right back to you and spend time answering questions meant a lot to me.  He's done several jobs for us now and all of them have been great.

Peter and his crew are really exceptional.  They did great work - better than I thought could be done - fewer holes in the ceiling too - and, get this, they left my house almost cleaner than they found it, which is really saying something because you know what a mess work crews always leave behind.  I have to say that Peter is very slow with email and it took a long time to get an estimate for a job.  I am happy that I wasn't in a hurry because their work was excellent and worth waiting for.

Had peter come out to help out with installation of a new circuit panel and a grounding rod.  Peter and Michael were prompt and did a great job, letting me know what some options were for getting things done.  Great job!

I called Peter after our home inspection indicated we needed an electrical upgrade.  He was extremely helpful, prompt, and knowledgeable.  He provided very thorough explanations all along the way to make sure we understood what our options would be.  Overall, a great experience.  We would definitely call Peter again!

I emailed Peter one afternoon and asked if he could give me a quote on installing a motion senor. He called 10 seconds later and said he was in the neighborhood and came over 20 minutes later. He gave me a reasonable quote and said his guys would be over later to install the motion detector. The guys came over a couple of hours later, were very nice and professional and did a top notch job. They set the whole thing up and showed me how to adjust the lights. I tried to pay them when they were finished, but they told me Peter would send me an invoice. They cleaned up the area before they left and now I have a professionally installed motion sensor at my rear entrance. Thanks Pete!!

I have used these guys several times for small-ish jobs, and I cannot recommend these guys enough.  Prompt, thorough, and fair.  If there is a better electrician on the south side, I'd be surprised.

I had been searching the Hyde Park area for a good, reliable and knowledgeable electrician and happened to search Yelp and found Peter and his team.  I could have not been more pleased.  Peter arrived in a timely fashion, listened carefully to my requests and then proceeded to install the much needed dimmers I had been searching for throughout my home.  I would happily contact Peter again for future projects.

Pete is the family doctor you need for your home. He cares, and he delivers promptly what he promises to. He diagnoses what's wrong and advises me on how to take good care of all things electrical. He answers all queries expeditiously and gives excellent referrals when he can't do the job. We Hyde Parkers are so lucky to have him!

Peter's firm was able to help us add an electrical outlet to our laundry closet.  His guy, Matt, was on time (not always the case with service calls these days so not to be overlooked), and did the work efficiently and professionally.  Peter was even kind enough to help us with additional questions we had weeks after the job was completed, which was much appreciated.

I recently asked Peter McCarthy for information about installing vent fans
in our bathrooms.  We talked (over email) about what is involved in doing
this project and Peter explained all of the various things that we and any
electrician we hired would have to take into consideration before and
during such a job.  I was once again very impressed with the thoroughness of his explanations and thoughtfulness of his responses and was reminded that he is a top-notch electrician and a real pleasure to work with, too.

We hired Peter a few years ago for a kitchen remodeling job.  He worked
with us to plan all electrical aspects of our kitchen remodeling and then
he and his colleague did all of the electrical work. His work was
excellent.  Peter is completely knowledgeable about his work, is prompt,

organized. If he is unclear on anything, he asks. He is extremely diligent
in answering any and all of your questions, too (either by phone or
email). He is very good at staying in touch not only about how the
electrical work is going, but also checking in about other aspects of the
overall project as well, so he makes sure to dovetail with other trades on
the job, if any, and makes the overall project go very smoothly.  I would
definitely hire him again for any electrical job, large or small, and plan
on doing so if/when we move forward with our bathroom vent project and
other electrical work we are planning.  I can recommend him
