Pat Swanson, Luis Crispin and Cheryl Moore did such a poor job handling a basic complaint, I have no choice but to believe they were trying to rip off my mother-in-law. I am writing this on her behalf as English is her second language, which I think Roto-Rooter may have tried to use to its advantage.
On Oct. 6, Roto-Rooter came out to check her water heater and said it was a pilot light. The tech re-lit it, kindly showed her how to relight it herself and charged her $100. Two days later, she still did not have hot water. She called back. The same gentleman returned and said she needed to have her thermo coupler replaced. He did the job and charged $576 but gave her a rebate of $100 for the fee charged a couple days before, so a total of $476.
Two days later, she remained without hot water. A new tech arrived and told her this is a common problem with the Rheem model she has. He explained the part is under warranty and she should call Rheem, which she does. Well, Rheem didn't honor its warranty, saying they had no techs available to do the work, so they mailed her the part. She called Roto-Rooter back and a tech came out and installed the part.
He charged $598, and he offered a discount from the bad diagnosis a couple days beforehand. But the discount was only $248 -- which is about half of what she paid for the bad diagnosis and the part she did not need.
I spoke to Cheryl Moore, who promised she would take care of it before ignoring my calls and emails for days. I then went to corporate where Pat Swanson, who said he was a liaison between the branch and customer, wrote on Nov. 17 that someone would reach out. Luis Crispin reached out to discuss the matter, but when I'd call back he was never in the office. I kindly left him a message explaining there was no need to discuss anything. Just send the refund. He kept playing phone tag. Finally, he left me a message saying the money had been refunded. It had not. I told him so. He left another message saying the refund had been processed, this time even sending a weird, unofficial-looking document showing a transfer back to my mother-in-law's card. It never showed up.
This went on for WEEKS until January 7 when I wrote Swanson again and threatened to contact state authorities, the Better Business Bureau, the PHCC, the state division of master plumbers, review sites and anyone else who can help get ... her money back. Only then did we get the refund. Months of wasted time and not so much as an apology. NEVER use this company.
