Using their website, I scheduled online to have someone from Roto Rooter service an external drain that was causing my basement to flood whenever there was heavy rainfall. The drain was just down the stairs outside my basement door, and there was only a two inch rise before water building up would seep into the basement.
The appointment I set was between 8-10am, so naturally I was expecting someone to show up late, like around 11am, as many service technicians do. Not only did a service manager call me that day at 7:30am to confirm the appointment, but the technician actually arrived around 8:20am! Off to a good start!
The technician (named Nyi #2408) politely took a moment to explain the inner workings of external drains, and how some are simply sumps (i.e. a hollowed out pit filled with gravel that simply collect excess rainfall, but doesn't actually drain the water out to the sewer). Apparently, it depends upon when the house was built. So, I started to think the worst, that snaking this drain may not do anything to relieve the flooding from excess rainfall. Nyi brought out a giant sized industrial snake, wet vac, and some other tools. Clearly, he was prepared. Another set of bonus points!
He started snaking the drain, and kept at it for approximately 45'. That's 45 feet, not inches. Along the way, he used the wet vac to suck up some debris that had accumulated over the years. After approximately 10-15 minutes of snaking, he retracted the snake, cleaned up the small mess pulled from the drain, and looked up with a smile: Ok, now we need water to test it!
So he filled a large unused plastic garbage can that I had with water. We're talking a 12-15 gallon, kitchen size can. Yes, size matters. I wasn't interested in seeing just a pale full of water trickle down the drain. I wanted a biblical flood to ensure the drain was clear!
And the moment of truth...as fast as he poured the water down the drain, it all went down and out. There was no backup! He filled the large bucket and second and third time. Each time, the water went down the clear drain without any hesitation! It was a beautiful sight.
This was the second time I used Roto Rooter. The first time was perhaps 5 years ago when I had an internal drain that I couldn't unclog with my handheld snake. As for the price, this is the way I see it: I could shop around and get estimates from half a dozen plumbers, some of whom will charge a service fee just to come out. And, I understand that. Every business has to make money. Or I could simply accept that for a rush/emergency job like this (i.e. not a bathroom remodel, etc.) I'm going to pay a little more for the convenience of picking a scheduled time (online!) and having someone reliably come out, without the possibility of telling me Sorry, I got stuck on another job. I'll be out later today or maybe tomorrow.
Would I use Roto Rooter again? Absolutely. Thank you Roto Rooter and thank you Nyi!
