When my wife and I moved out of a rental apartment into a condo, we used Michael and Son for awhile, for HVAC work, a plumbing clog, a new water heater, and some handyman work. We had a really mediocre experience overall, and Michael and Son is pretty expensive--I suppose you could do worse, and they always got the job done right eventually, but I think you'd have to be really really risk-averse to want to put up with Michael and Son's high prices, the inconsistent skill level of their employees, and their inconsistent customer service. First we used them for a plumbing, HVAC and electrical inspection, to install a new more-sophisticated thermostat, and to figure out why our HVAC system was turning off and on quite frequently, running the heat or AC and ventilation for short periods of time alternating with it being off for short periods. One of their senior HVAC techs who was a really nice guy too figured it out quickly, he realized a vent in our condo was positioned to blow air on the thermostat, giving it an inaccurate read on the temperature in the rest of the condo, and that installing a simple plastic airflow re-direction device by the vent could prevent the problem by directing the air away from blowing right onto the thermostat. But this was only after two other Michael and Son employees, a more junior HVAC tech and an electrician, had no idea what the problem was, thinking their might be a holes in our ductwork that would need plugging with Aeroseal... I had to spend an extra day or two at home from work because they couldn't figure out the problem right away. I don't know, maybe that's just par for the course with HVAC work, but I'm a little skeptical.
Michael and Son's handymen who installed a curtain rod and did some dry wall touchup for us were good, but seemed quite expensive. Michael and Son also put in a new water heater to replace the old one our condo came with. I have to give the plumber--a really nice guy who also fixed our clogged sink--credit for being very patient and nice to me when I was flipping out a bit over the price of the water heater after two coworkers of mine questioned why it was costing me nearly $4,000, getting very skeptical of them over the price and thinking about canceling the installation. Turns out my coworkers and I were in the wrong on the price, our condo has a closed-loop direct-vent heating system that uses heat the water heater makes to heat the condo unit--and other sources online said this type of water heater costs close to $4,000 normally, it's a more complicated piece of equipment that also takes over twice as much labor hours to install as a standard one. So Michael and Son's wasn't charging a particularly high price for this type of water heater--but then it turns out the plumber accidentally installed some valves it backwards, and this later seems to have caused a circulator pump elsewhere in our HVAC system to break. So then our whole HVAC system (besides the water heater and the ducts) had to be replaced and we were without heat for several days in November. One of the HVAC installation techs admitted to us that the backwards valves probably broke the pump. I didn't hold this against the plumber who installed the water heater because, again, really nice guy, accidents happened, the county inspector who came to inspect the new water heater missed the problem too--but I still wanted a bit of a refund on the cost of the new HVAC system, and Michael and Son would not give it to me, their customer service told me to email them with some info on what happened and how much money I'd like to get back and then, after two or three emails, a follow-up phone call, they never got back to me. I didn't ask for that much, the HVAC system was due for replacement in about 2 years anyway, so I asked for 15% of the cost because that's how much of its original expected service life was left, or simply giving me 2 years' of free tuneups on the HVAC as compensation. If Michael and Son had passed a little refund my way, I'd still be using them, but they did not, so I got upset enough to switch... have another HVAC company coming to do an inspection and tuneup of my HVAC system in a few weeks.
