I had an extremely mixed experience with this company. In the end, I would not call them for service in the future. My fireplace pilot light would not start, so I called Jiffy Plumbing and Heating. Here is what happened:
1. Scheduling was easy, prompt, and pleasant. I was told that a technician would be sent out to perform general maintenance and cleaning of the fireplace for the price of $149, after which, the technician would be able to diagnose the problem. Additional costs would be assessed based on the diagnosis.
2. A technician named Jay showed up to my house. I have used quotation marks on purpose because this guy didn't seem to have any clue what he was doing. He told me things like, You don't have any gas coming out. as if that was the diagnosis (Duh! That's why I called a professional! ). He asked me if I had any batteries because he legitimately thought that the problem might have been that the remote was dead (even if it was, my fireplace has an option to manually light it). At this point I was getting suspicious, but I played nice and gave the man his batteries; predictably, it didn't fix anything. At this point, he goes out to his truck to make a call. This is always a bad sign. Firstly, he should know how to diagnose the problem correctly himself, he is a professional (or at least he claims to be one) - he shouldn't need coaching from the motherboard. Secondly, if he felt the need to make the call out of my earshot, something shady is going down. After 10-15 minutes, Jay comes back in and tells me that the gas valve is bad and needs to be replaced. I ask him how much that is going to cost, and he doesn't know. I press him, assuming he can give me at least a ballpark estimate, after all, he does this for a living, right? This necessitates another call in his truck. 10 minutes later he comes back again and says that when I call to schedule another appointment they will be able to give me a price. He seems about to wrap up, so I mention to him that on the phone I was told that part of today's visit would be general maintenance and cleaning of my fireplace, could he please take care of that? Jay responds that his orders were to diagnose the problem only, for the price of $119. I question this, he makes another phone call from his truck (see a theme here?), he comes back with the same $119 price. At this point, I have waited around so ridiculously long for his phone calls and the guy clearly doesn't have the expertise to clean and maintain my fireplace, so I pay up. I don't know if Jay was a substitute for the normal technician or what, but he was entirely under qualified and incompetent at his job. The only positive thing about this visit was that Jay, at the least, was polite.
3. After a few days a waiting for a call back from the motherboard, I finally get a hold of someone to schedule a follow-up appointment. They also provided a price to replace the gas valve: just shy of $600. I complained that I never even got my general fireplace cleaning and maintenance that was originally promised. The woman on the phone immediately discounted my price by $50 to make up for this. Everything felt fishy to me and I decided to not make the appointment just yet and to get a second opinion before shelling out nearly $600.
4. I get a hold of another company (Plumbed to Perfection - whom I highly recommend), explain the situation. After a few simple questions about the make and model of my gas fireplace unit, they assure me that the problem is almost definitely NOT a bad gas valve. My unit is top-of-the-line and the gas valves almost never break on them. They give me some quick education on my unit and they schedule a day to come out. In the end, the problem was NOT the gas valve or my fireplace unit at all. There was water in my gas line that had to be blown out. If I had allowed Jiffy to replace the gas valve, it: a) would not have fixed the problem, and b) would possibly have cheapened the quality of the gas valve on my top-of-the-line unit.
5. Redemption. In the end, my husband and I decided to ask Jiffy for a refund of our original payment of $119 because of the shoddy service we received. They agreed on the condition that we provide a receipt showing the the actual problem. We did, and they refunded us. I give them credit for being stand-up enough to refund us our money for a job poorly done.
