After PLUMB GENIUS didn't show for our 10-2 appt today, didn't answer their phones, and their voicemail was full, I called Roto Rooter for the clogged line we have that's effecting the whole house. We can't shower or flush at this point so it's an emergency. As a previous customer, I've been happy with their work in the past--quick, efficient, cost-friendly! Perfect!!
I scheduled today for a 3-5pm window, which they confirmed, fyi, via email AND text. The email and text said I'd be contacted when the tech was ON THE WAY. It did not say if I don't answer the phone I'm out of luck. Just that they'd call when they were headed this way.
I saw a missed call from them a few min before 5, called back and was told now that it's after 5pm, I'm going to be charged the after hours rate which is not on their website when you choose your time frame fyi. (A window from 5-7pm was listed as available, but no indication you'd be charged extra if you chose that time frame. I actually--stupidly--thought so nice to see a business with extended hours to accommodate working people!)
Carley, the dispatcher, threatened to hang up on me when I mentioned how they're completely fucking me over, and she took offense. I imagine that's not the first she heard that today given their shady business practices.
She then told me it was my own fault for not answering before 5. I was working. If the email had said make sure to answer the phone or we're going to charge you twice the rate you expected, I surely would have kept the ringer on. I definitely would have called them myself well before 5pm if I was aware of the severe financial penalty.
When asked for her boss' name and number she said she'd have them call me. When I asked for the direct number, she stated she wasn't allowed to give out that information. In what legitimate business are you not allowed to give out the office manager's direct number??
When I asked her for the technician's name who was coming over, she hung up on me.
When I called back she told me she said his name? But I didn't hear it and I sure didn't hear bye! before being hung up on. She argued with me of course and told me the calls are recorded.
They emailed me the confirmation, and texted me. So, surely they also could have texted or emailed to let me know I was going to be charged double if I didn't get right back to them, but then they wouldn't get to screw me out of $350.
I used to be impressed with this business. Like I said, I've used them before. No longer. Don't call unless you want to be totally fucked over. But when in dire straights, choices are limited.
The technician, Nathan, was nice, knowledgeable, and worked hard to resolve the issue. I won't blame him for the deceptive business practices of his employer. He was able to assess the situation and create a workable solution for the time being. It looks as though our pipe may need replaced (it's cast iron likely from when the house was built, rather than PVC), but the emergency has been resolved. He was also able to give me an ultimate rate I was satisfied with given the amount of work he'd done, which was SIGNIFICANTLY better than Carley quoted me. For him, I am grateful.
