If I could give a negative rating, this business for sure deserves one. They are incompetent, unresponsive, and just a poor excuse of a legit business.
I called EPS because my gas water heater would not ignite. I tried for 2 days to light it, even tried other contractors. I considered it an emergency situation, having been without hot water for two days. Trusting Yelp's reviews, I called EPS, spoke to Lahela. I explained my situation and informed her I did not know what the problem was, why the gas heater would not ignite but that the gas flow was okay because my stove worked fine. I also asked what the $99 charge would entail and she explained it was to assess the situation and would be credited to parts and labor once they knew what was wrong. I wanted to be sure she understood I did not know what was wrong. She insisted, Just let the technician come out and asses it.
So Kyle, the technician, comes out. He's such a nice guy. All he did was the same thing my beau and I did for the past two days, click the igniter. He was there all of maybe 5-10 minutes. He informed me he didn't know what was wrong and that if I had the part, he could install it, or if I had a new water heater, he could install it. He didn't even have parts. He didn't even try to open the water heater and fiddle around in there. I informed him I didn't know what was wrong, that's why I called EPS, how could I know what part was needed?
I asked him, Am I still going to get charged?
He felt badly having to charge me for this service call, said he'd call the office to see if they would waive it. Evidently, he was told no. I wrote my check. Kyle apologized and said he could come back out and I would be credited the service/assessment fee if I got the part. WHAT PART?!! I still didn't know what was wrong with the gas water heater!
I called Lahela, explained what just happened and respectfully asked if they would waive the fee since all they did was click the igniter, just as we did, and anybody else would do, in trying to ignite the water heater and that my problem was still not fixed. I explained that I thought they would help me figure out what the problem was. She did not even acknowledge their not addressing the actual problem but went on to explain that the fee is for the technician's time and gas. I explained that Kyle just said he was on his way into town anyway, since he lived in town. She responded, It's the cost of doing business.
I get it, being a business owner myself, but sometimes you should do the right thing when you're not able to deliver as you promised. Again, I asked Lahela to please consider waiving the fee and to please do the right thing and that I would now have to call another contractor out to figure out the problem. She responded that it was not her call and she would address it in a manager's meeting the next morning and would call me the next day before noon. She did not. I knew she wouldn't.
I had some faith that they, as a local business, would do the right thing. I waited for her call. She never called. I waited to see if they would cash the check. They did. I waited to write this review because it just bothered me that they did nothing for me but rip me off. Really, it's the inconvenience they caused me and now broken trust for random local businesses. It's not necessarily about the money but the principle of this whole situation. It's always the principle because I would've paid whatever amount to get my water heater fixed so my family could have hot water.
Another kicker is on their website, they claim to be Better Business Bureau accredited and A rated when in fact they are not even accredited. False advertising. I confirmed it with the BBB Hawaii. In my opinion, the only way to do good business is to listen to your customers' reviews and constructive criticisms and do what's necessary to right your ship. Your integrity and reputation is everything. They had the chance to make things right, do what's pono. They didn't. The almighty dollar rules yet another business's mission and business model. Good luck to EPS.
