Dillon is the best!  He showed up on time, and was clear and professional. Explained what needed to be done and was super efficient with his time. Very grateful.

I've worked with this company on and off for over 20 years. For one reason or another I've ended up different companies several times, but I keep coming back to Clark when I remember my experiences. The most recent was when I had three faucet related issues in my old hose that were beyond my basic skills.  The scheduler called me back on a Sunday. The guy who came immediately fixed what he could with available parts, didn't charge for the partial fixes and followed up to make sure I could get the hard to find bits.  The plumbers are almost unfailingly knowledgeable, on time, and courteous. I wish I could say the same for all the companies I have used.

Our basement pipe was leaking over the weekend.  Calling a dozen local plumbing companies, Thomas E Clark was the first to have a human answer the phone quickly.  They listened to our problem and was very attentive.  Being early afternoon on a Sunday during a heatwave, they advised they could help us in the evening after 8.  We were grateful they could fit us in their schedule during a heatwave of broken air conditioners.  We had to cancel because another plumber returned our call and was able to come to repair in 10 minutes.

Appreciation of a representative to speak with and customer service on the phone!

Davon and Dee just left.  Fantastic service from start to finish.  I was in a bind - needed help TODAY. Spoke to Theresa on the phone who really seemed to make the effort to help me out, even though I'm a new customer. Davon and Dee knew what they were doing, were very polite and knowledgeable, worked quickly and efficiently and fixed my problem.  Thank you very much. Great to work with this family owned business.

I had an incredibly frustrating experience just trying to schedule this company to do an inspection of my AC system to get a quote for replacing it. When I initially scheduled them, they gave me a 4 hour window from 12-4 PM, which required me to take half a day off work because I do not work from home. Two hours into this window, they called and told me the tech would likely arrive closer to the four hour point. Then, he never shows, and only after I call them do they inform me that he had an emergency at the previous appointment and wouldn't be able to come until at least 6PM. I had other engagements that night so couldn't wait for him, so reluctantly rescheduled to 10-12 the next morning. Again, I had to take a half day off work for this. Then, the next morning there's supposedly another emergency at the site the tech was at before mine, and they said he probably wouldn't come until 1. I couldn't afford to take the whole day off work, so I cancelled the appointment because they were extremely unreliable when trying to gain new business, and I expect their service wouldn't be much better once they already have my money. I do not recommend them.

Our water heater broke on a Saturday and at the suggestion of a neighbor, we called Thomas E Clark Plumbing.  From beginning to end, the replacement of the water heater was seamless.  The plumber, Raphael, and his helper showed up on time and immediately explained the process to us.
They were knowledgeable,  professional, careful and very neat in replacing the water heater.  And given that it was a Saturday and COVID, we were delighted that they had the water heater in stock!  We could not have been more pleased with the process, from beginning to end!

If Thomas E. Clark Plumbing can get you in a situational corner, they'll take you to the cleaners. They charged us at a rate of at least $877 per hour. They might also walk off with your property like they did ours.

For same-day service of (1) a leaking faucet-sprayer hose and (2) a clogged drain, they charged us $1,509. They said they didn't have the right fitting for a new hose, so the only solution was to replace the entire faucet for $999. They said it would take days to find the right fitting, leaving our tenants without a working kitchen sink for who knows how many days. That was the situational corner they got us in. While the leak stopped if the faucet was off, a good landlord needs to keep their tenant's utilities working. Unscrupulous contractors know that and will exploit it.

According to HomeGuide, you can expect to pay about $125 to $170 per hour when you need emergency plumbing services. For 1.5 hours of work, Clark Plumbing charged us $1,509. Given that the awful faucet they installed to fix a hose leak retails for $193, their rate was at least $877 per hour!

On top of that, the Clark plumber walked off with our higher-end kitchen faucet that he removed. According to him and our tenant, its only defect was that its replaceable hose sprung a leak. He never asked if he could take our faucet, and not being on site ourselves, we were not able to notice and stop him. I'd have assumed that, like other contractors, he'd leave any of our property he worked on, or ask if we wanted it to be disposed of. Instead, on his own volition he decided our property was at his discretion.

That work was done on a Saturday evening (Dec 21), and I called within 24 hours asking them to return the faucet. I was told they disposed of it. However, given that the county dump was closed the entire time and that Sunday trash collection is unlikely, it seems improbable that it could have been irrevocably disposed of. Moreover, it's impossible to believe a plumber would not be aware that he was walking off with a perfectly good higher-end contemporary faucet that only needed a new hose. My second call back on Sunday, asking how they could have irrevocably disposed of it on the weekend was not returned.

Thomas E. Clark Plumbing are bandits with a wrench who ripped us off in every way they could.

Our boiler was starting to act up so we decided to seek competitive proposals to replace the unit.  Clark was one of several that came to provide an estimate.  The estimator, Carlos, was very thorough, knowledgeable, and helpful in my understanding what he proposed to do.  After evaluating the proposals from competitors, we selected Thomas Clark to do the work.  Carlos and his team arrived at the time promised and did an excellent job removing the old unit and installing a new one made by NTI.  It is a pleasure to work with a true professional who was very careful throughout the process to ensure its successful completion.

I requested a quote to replace both my AC unit and my water heater from this company. During my conversation with the technician, he rudely called me out for interrupting him while correcting him about the status of our chimney liner and the manufacturer warranty of a particular AC unit model. At the end of our argument, he refused to give a quote and he told me that his company is nor for me. Good to know that they are not looking to earn new customers. I will never use this company and I do not recommend them to anyone. I got the jobs done with inspections passed by other company.

Horrible service. The technician came to repairs leak in utility room.
He told that he fixed.
Few days later the leak happens again, the same tech Ian came back and claimed that it was another issue.
He was doing a very sloppy job, that now I need  to hire somebody else.
Very disappointed!

Cannot say enough about their hard work, dedication and smarts.  I recently used them to help locate a ring that had fallen in the toilet and was automatically flushed into the pipes.  Their response time was immediate, they devised a tool to catch the ring should it have flown into the street sewer and were incredibly persistent.  I will use them again for my home plumbing.

Wonderful experience both times with Chris and his helper fixing and replacing both toilets.  I appreciate their quick response when my toilet was leaking last week.   It is nice to have senior citizens well served and the discount is appreciated.   Very pleasant and knowledgeable plumbers.  I love my two new toilets!  My next door neighbors use your company and I decided to follow them!

No one in the history of home ownership wants to hear the words your boiler needs to be replaced. No one. But after 30 years our gas boiler had finally given up the ship. And lucky for us friend had recommended Thomas E Clark to us a couple of years before. They are professional, efficient and they explained exactly what was needed. They installed the new boiler, took the titanic relic away with them and cleaned up the work site. Fabulous. Courteous and professional staff!

Disappointing.  After doing plumbing work, they reported that both my hot water heater AND my furnace would not turn back on.  After spending a long time to figure it out without success, they broke the glass window out and lit it by hand, leaving an open hole with a flame behind it.  This visit cost $1100 and they didn't get to the hole in the drain line I had first called about which still leaked.  The next day, their furnace expert charged another $69 to clean and inspect and announce my furnace's mercury switch had died and I needed a completely new furnace for $6700-7300.  (Both it and the water heater were fine before their visit.)

In the end, I fixed the furnace myself by simply vacuuming a piece of rust out of the pilot light nozzle that was apparently interfering with it.  And the alleged mercury switch?  It and the furnace are working just fine again.

What's worse, I called to get credit for the furnace visit, wrote a long email that same day explaining why, and mailed a letter a week later....all without a call back or response of any kind.  This tells me alot about their interest in customer concerns.

It also makes me wonder how many old ladies and homeowners who are unable to inspect their own furnaces end up getting up sold new equipment that wasn't really necessary.

One last thing...I called my furnace manufacturer.  They were surprised at the price quoted.  They noted that their distributer sells a replacement unit with the same exact venting valve configuration as mine (making installation very simple) for $1995 delivered.  This puts the $7300 quote in perspective.

I called Thomas E Clark to fix my A/C after it stopped working. They offered to come the day I called (Monday) evening which was great, and asked for a $104 overtime charge rate in addition to any service provided. It seemed fair and I agreed. The person came and fixed a clogged pipe quickly. When I looked at the receipt ($~450), I noticed that I was also charged for an overtime rate on the service. So overtime charge, and then additional overtime rate which turned up to be 30% more. This I was not told. Few days later, the A/C stopped working again. So I called the same company and they said they will send someone, but again are asking for an overtime charge and an overtime rate. I agreed thinking that if they will come back to fix their work they may not charge me again. The new technician said he is diagnosing a new problem, this time with the A/C unit wiring, and will have to replace the wires. He did replace them and got the A/C running again, and charged $~600 for the service. He also recommended that in the long run I should add protection to the wires and he will send me a quote. The next day, the A/C stopped working again. When I called the company, they claimed that it is because I haven't added their wire protection and it is my fault (even though this is not something that the technician said is necessary immediately and definitely did not imply that the A/C can't work for even 24 hours without). With that approach, and while I should have insisted they come and fix the problem without charging me, I decided that enough is enough and I will take the sunk cost and call another company. The other company came the same day, fixed a completely different problem and added refrigerant all for less than 400$ and A/C is working flawlessly since. Will not call them again.

Our previous awesome HVAC guy, Mr. Saini, retired, and had recommended Thomas E. Clark.

Absolutely great experience with their HVAC side. The tech (Daniel, I think) worked hard at fixing both HVAC zones after the house was hit by lightning. It took a couple of days, some sleuthwork, and extra parts, but he had us at a comfortable temp before the outdoor heat kicked up again. He was professional and pleasant, really seemed to go above and beyond in at least making us feel cared for, but also in making sure the job was done well. Our insurance reimbursed everything, which I took to mean they found the charges to be reasonable.

We were also pleased with the plumbing work. Our sump pump was taken out by the same hit, and the plumber (Efren, I think) had us up and pumping again right away. (And our insurance covered all of that too, so reasonable charges, I presume.) He also found a leak in our powder room sink and did a beautiful job replacing the hardware and caulking around it. The price for the hardware he had on hand was quite high, though is lovely. I actually love my sink hardware now. Efren was friendly and seemed to also work hard.

I do not doubt, but am nonetheless mystified, by the number of negative reviews about Thos. E. Clark. In my 14 years in DC, we have had them for both large and small jobs. They are alwys done withe the very highest level of skill and professionalism.  I don't know if the pricing is higher than it should be as I have no means to compare. I do know that I spent 35 years in a very competitive and often reviled business (new car dealer, service and body shop) and delivering consistently proper service requires a staff that is well-trained, committed, customer conscious, experienced and, frankly, well paid. Thos. E. Clark, in our experience, is first-rate.

I'm not quite sure why this place is getting such high marks. I called to ask for pricing to replace the shut off valve to a toilet. This is a pretty standard repair and although I could probably do it myself, since I have to shut-off the water to the whole condominium, I want to be sure it's done right the first time so I thought I'd hire a plumber.

Anyway, they charge $99 to come to the location and then charge by the job (not by the time). When asked what it would cost to replace the shut off valve, which is a pretty standard job, they said they couldn't quote me a price until they came to view the issue, which would cost me $99. There is no reason to come see a toilet shut-off valve replacement. This is a simple plumbing job which doesn't require a view.

In the end, they quoted me a price after I questioned why they would need to see what the cost to replace a toilet shut off valve. Overall, bad customer service and over-priced.

First hired Thomas E Clark 15 years ago.  They are honest, reliable, fair and professional.  I've since use them for new AC systems, Heating systems, water heaters.  Absolutely the only choice you should make. Sure they don't advertise like the others but they don't need too.

This is a review of Thomas E Clark's plumbers.

I had a leak in my shower faucet and called TEC to come out. They removed a broken cartridge which controls the shower/tub faucet. They said a new cartridge had to be ordered. However, they left my shower with a gaping hole in the wall where the faucet is supposed to be, and without any running water (I could turn the water on manually and it would just shoot out of the wall, I guess).

After that, TEC did not provide any info about when my part would arrive (which was apparently ordered in a batch, so perhaps I wasn't the only customer left in the dark). At one point I called them and they did not know if the part would arrive on Friday, or on Monday (so maybe I wouldn't have a working bath or shower for 3 days, or maybe 6 days, who knows?). At another call they had apparently scheduled an appt. without telling me and without the part having even arrived. Every time they didn't have info about something, they said they would call me back, which I'm convinced now was just to get me off the phone.

They apologized for the issue a week later however, at the time, Thomas E Clark did not seem to care that they left a customer's job half done without any information about when they would come back. Very unlikely to call them in the future.

I just had Clark plumbing install a new showerhead and kitchen sink.  I supplied the showerhead and sink.  The cost of labor for 50 minutes of work came to over $450.  I was stunned.  I learned they don't charge by the hour any more but by the job.  And their prices are off the charts.   I used to use them regularly years ago when their prices were high but reasonable.  Now I would not recommend them to anyone who has even the slightest concern with cost.

I really wanted to work with this company based on reviews and a recommendation. I tried to reach them 5 times. I hoped to schedule two appointments. One for a home furnace repair and one for an HVAC audit.

My first call someone said they couldn't schedule me, but someone would call me back within an hour. They never did. I tried calling two more times, but their phones weren't working. So, I chatted with someone online, and submitted an online request for service...Still, no one called me.

I finally reached someone today.  They said I would have to pay over time if I wanted anyone out to our house within a week. They gave me a 12:00-4:00 window on Thursday. I asked if it could be 12-3. The answer was no, you could do earlier if you want to pay overtime.

I told them to please convey to someone there that I was flexible with them and I regret it. I would go work with Cropp Metcalf instead.

I can't say the people at Thomas Clark were rude, but I can't say they were helpful. They waisted an entire day, and added a headache to something that should have been pretty easy.

We have used Thomas E Clark before, and so I called them to service a toilet. They came the next day, when they said they would. Davon was totally suited out in protective gear: face mask, gloves and booties for his shoes. Turns out we needed a new toilet, and he had one on the truck! He replaced ours immediately, left a totally clean space and was out the door in an hour. I call that excellent service, at a reasonable price. Thank you, Clark!

These guys are a great company to work with.  Period.  You'll be in good hands if you work with them.  Hands-on President who is very mindful of the 125 year reputation of the business.   There's a reason why they've lasted as long as they have, and it's not because of poor customer service.

I've read some of the complaints in the negative reviews, and many seem unwarranted.

1.  Complaints that they charge by the job not by the hour.   This is a good thing for everyone.  Pricing is straightforward to the customer, and the the company is never accused of milking the clock.  The

2.  Complaints about the site visit fee.  Again... pricing is upfront... no mystery, and you get what you pay for.  It costs money to get a licensed professional to show up to your door and diagnose a problem.  We do the same thing for doctors, auto mechanics ...  You can't expect a professional to drive to your door, diagnose a problem for you, then allow you to call up a bunch of competitors with a diagnosis from a professional in hand.

Terrible service and rude staff! Sent a very ill employee to fix air conditioning. Had my husband try to help him do his work. Said he was sending another employee out same day but we were told otherwise by the manager of Clark. He wanted to send back the same ill employee the next day. When I complained, he hung up in me. Horrible inconsistent service over the past 2 years.

I am a native Washingtonian, and my family previously had used and liked Thomas E Clark for over 20 years.  In particular, the technician named Jason is stellar.

Their admin staff and scheduling has recently gone through the tubes, and they are not worth the hassle.  I recently placed multiple calls, emails, etc both during office hours and during off hours over a four week period to request an appointment with Jason.  In spite of spending a lot of time repeating the story and my request, they failed to ever contact me.  The people who pick up the phone fail to identify themselves, but are actually dispatchers who are utterly clueless and inept.

A couple of weeks ago, and only after voicing my complaints, the dispatchers finally put me directly through the HVAC dept, and they scheduled an appointment with me between 8-9 AM this morning this AM.  He failed to show up, and after multiple wait times with the dispatcher and my members of the HVAC staff, I ultimately spoke with an exceptionally unprofessional rude person by the name of Mike Hartmann.  He is rude, horrible, and terrible.  As a result, I will never even bother with Thomas E Clark in the future.

I am very disappointed and regretful that I called Thomas E. Clark. After paying nearly $153, my problem has not been solved.

The staff people on the phone were very friendly and the plumber that was ultimately sent was helpful, but they recommended services that I did not need and did not adequately disclose the cost.

Carlos, the HVAC technician who came, and did not do any work, assured me that the $104 call out fee that I paid him would be split with the plumber.  This was not the case and I had to pay the plumber an additional $49.  After taking off a day of work, and losing $143, I still have a leak.

Be sure to ask your company if they are charging you overtime before booking anything and don't rely on dispatch people to send you correct technicians!! And better yet, go with a company that is actually available during the hours that working people are available!

Pros: Fast Response Time; Professional

Con: VERY expensive

So I am a bit torn on this review.  They were incredibly responsive and were able to send someone to our unit ASAP.  The technician was knowledgeable and very nice.  He recommended that we had to replace the hot water heater.  Unfortunately they price they quoted was DOUBLE (more than $1000 over my other quote) than other quotes I received (for the exact same brand of water heater as the replacement).  I called the Company and said if they could come down on the price I'd be willing to use them since they had been so helpful (and because I already had to pay $99 for the initial diagnosis).  I was told they had zero flexibility on price, so I ultimately went with another company (who I was VERY happy with).  Overall, seemingly good company just ridiculously overpriced.

I really had to say something about my experience with Thomas E Clark.  Our boiler went out which supplies both heat and hot water to our entire house.  I called Thomas E Clark and they had an HVAC tech onsite within an hour and a half.  He quickly figured out the problem, some kind of control module and we also had a rusted expansion tank.  He had both parts available and fixed everything in under an hour.

During this time, we discovered a pinhole leak in another pipe.  The HVAC tech couldn't fix this, but called in and had a plumber onsite literally within 5 minutes after he left.  This leak was in a really tough spot, but it didn't seem to pose any problem for the plumber.  Again, done within an hour.  Both of the guys were very careful and thorough.

Also, everyone was so nice and professional, from the person I spoke to on the phone to both of the guys that came out to the house.  Really great job.  I would definitely recommend. thanks

I called Thomas E Clark to address a malfunctioning air conditioning unit.  While the technician was courteous and knowledgeable, I found their pricing to be outrageous.  I was charged a total of $288 ($219 in parts and labor and $69 in service call fee) to replace a capacitor.  I mentioned to the tech that $219 seemed high for a part that was so simple and so easily repaired, (took less than five minutes) but I ultimately paid for the part and the installation.

Subsequent research online showed I could buy a dual capacitor for less than $10 at hardware stores or home improvement retailers.  I can understand a markup and charging for labor, but that seems excessive.  I also called the company to inquire about the pricing.  They were polite but didn't provide much in the way of explanation other than to say their pricing comes from a national book and that their part was better than others.  I'm sure both of these things are true; I just find it hard to believe that their part is 20 times better, justifying the cost.

In short, they received two stars because the technician was great but their pricing structure seems geared to take advantage of homeowners who aren't well-versed in the nuances of a/c repair.  I don't begrudge anyone for making a living, but I am left feeling taken advantage of which I don't appreciate.

this place is a colossal ripoff. charged me $1400 to replace a $100 boiler pump (retail price, they billed it at $700) and fix a valve which took about two hours labor total, so roughly $650 an hour. Just incredible.

My credit card got charged more then double what I was quoted on the phone for their initial assessment of my HVAC system.  There was a clear lack of communication from their service representative.

The repair itself was good, but probably significantly more expensive than other HVAC specialists in the area.

They came out to address some plumbing issues in our home. They snaked a drain, cleared a clog, and had to remove and put a toilet back in place. In putting it back, they cracked the based of the toilet and rendered it wobbly, creating even more problems. The line they snaked ended up having more lingering issues and kept getting clogged up. They gave us a proposal, but after calling for two weeks to talk about price and set up a time, George never returned our call. I left countless messages asking to speak, but nothing. Really not good nor professional ... I'm not sure where the ball is being dropped, but as a company, they should be getting back to me if they want my business.

I have been using Thomas E Clark for 30 years for jobs ranging from the routine to the big disasters (like having to replace all the leaking galvanized pipes in my old house). All of their employees are friendly, knowledgeable, great at explaining things, and never try to upsell you. Service is always on time, quick and thorough. Today a tech came at 8 am to do a standard winter heating checkup and saw that my water heater was leaking and needed to be replaced. Clark had it in stock and everything was finished by 11.

This is a great company.

Needed repair on my tankless hotwater boiler combo. No hot water. The first technician that came out didn't know how to service this type of unit (even though I told them it was a tankless unit).
The second one knew how and isolated problem (new part needed that had to be overnighted). That cost me $300.
Once part arrived, the third guy replaced it. That cost me $700. But, while the unit was fixed, the hot water wasn't getting hot enough and not hot at all in kitchen and bathroom faucets. The technician suspected a new mixing valve was needed. The quote to repair that was ....wait for it....$1,400! Said it would take 5 - 6 hours to complete. I said NO THANKS and called my regular plumber (who unfortunately couldn't do the other work because he doesn't service tankless boiler/hot water units). He bought new mixing value and replaced it in ...wait for it....ONE HOUR. Total cost: $521.97. NEVER AGAIN will I call Thomas E Clark. Suggest you don't either.

I can't praise or express my appreciation enough for Thomas E Clark's professionalism and standards of excellence. The company installed a large condenser unit on the roof of our house several years ago. When the AC failed to work at the beginning of the hot weather, they came out and saw that the earlier installer had not secured the unit properly and it had fallen off its platform. At the height of its busiest work period, Thos E Clark's manager said that it was their error sent two technicians to repair the unit at no charge. I would never have known that it was an installation error, and if they had charged me, I would have paid full freight for the repair. In a time when few companies pay attention to customer service or give a thought to workmanship, Thos E Clark stands out as a company of the highest integrity and professionalism. Outstanding.

I had Thomas E Clark out twice now and I've been thoroughly impressed both times by their professionalism, knowledge, and honesty.

The first time was for a humidifier. They gave me all my options and the prices and carefully outlined the pros and cons of each. They eventually steered me towards the cheapest option. (It works great and installation was very professional, clean...) while I had the rep here I asked about an unrelated issue--getting my house to heat and cool more evenly. He told me my options again and honestly told me the highest cost one was probably not what I really wanted because it was best suited for when you're going to be opening up all the walls anyway. The rep gave me a free, easy idea to try and it worked! Wow.

This most recent time I had the plumbing guys out to discuss a backwater valve. The rep told me the pros and cons of the valve itself and evaluated my house's suitability for it/need for it. He basically told me it isn't necessary for me and would cause a huge mess and high costs.

Yet again since I had him here I asked about an unrelated issue-sewer gases getting into our house. Others I've talked to told me I'd need to rip out the walls and ceiling in the bathroom to get at the venting--very expensive. Thomas E Clark's guy looked at my problem and came up with a cheaper, less invasive solution to try first.

Common sense, honest HVAC and plumbing? I think I'm in love.

I have used Thomas E. Clark for more than 20 years and I highly recommend their advice and the quality of their work. I turn to them for regularly scheduled AC and heating maintenance and my bigger jobs (I don't call them for little things like snaking drains). They have done everything from replacing all my old galvinized pipes that had sprung pinhole leaks to just installing a new central air unit. They often send people who know you and your house from past visits. They make coordination with other companies easy, such as arranging for my walls to be restored after the pipe job or timing their visits to work on my furnace to mesh with a company called in to reline my chimney. I've never compared prices, but I've never felt overcharged.

TL;DR: Book these guys; they're great. My experience with them was top-notch.

LONG VERSION: A little background. My wife and I are fairly new homeowners (going on two years), and we've definitely had our share of live-and-learn moments so far. Notably, right after we bought our house, we had to have some plumbing work done. Not extensive, but enough little annoying stuff to rack our costs up to over $1500. For those repairs, we went with a local plumber/handyman. He seemed great, so we used him for the installation of a new water heater last year. That was a mistake.

Not too long ago, I noticed a faint smell of gas coming from the water heater hookup, so we called these guys to come inspect it. I called them at 8.am. in the morning; they were at my house by 1 p.m. (without a rush fee). Erwin - who I can't speak of highly enough - came out and was the ultimate professional. Sure enough, the other plumber tightened the connection so hard that it cracked it, releasing a small amount of gas. Erwin then informed me that the flexible gas hoses used for our water heater and HVAC weren't really recommended, and it was a shortcut the other plumber took. At that point, I asked Erwin to go ahead and do a once-over of the entire water heater connection. He also found the other plumber used duct tape - DUCT TAPE! - to secure the water heater venting. That's a MAJOR carbon monoxide risk, and very luckily, Erwin had all the parts he needed to fix that issue, too. For all of that work (new gas hose installation, correcting of water heater duct work, and inspection of the unit), it was $450. I think it's a small price to pay for the safety of my family and whomever is going to rent our basement space in the future.

For those of you complaining about the consultation fee, GET OVER IT. They apply it to your balance should you decide to do work with them. Plumbing work is extensive, and I agree that it's incredibly hard to give an estimate - almost always to the chagrin of the customer when it winds up being more - over the phone. There are pipes, water/gas lines, valves, etc. that all need to be evaluated for an accurate estimate, and that's exactly what Erwin did. He walked me through every single thing about my repair - including nice-to-haves, but not necessary - and the cost associated with each. That's not something you can do over the phone. I never felt pressured to fix anything that wasn't necessary, and Erwin was incredibly patient as this new homeowner asked a bunch of questions.

We'll have these guys back to the house for any plumbing and HVAC service we need, including when we need those custom pipes fitted for a permanent solution in the water heater/HVAC closet. As far as I know, their work is also guaranteed, so that gives me peace of mind, too.

Book these guys; they're great.

We had a gas leak that had to be turned off by Wash. Gas. Thomas Clark was immediately responsive after 6pm that day - although they couldn't get someone out that evening, they sent a technician by 3pm the next day. Their work was quick with no issues and reasonably priced. They were also willing to come back for free if the leak persisted.

owning a home....

or rather, paying off a bank who owns your home while you occupy it, can be expensive.

occupying an older home can be even more expensive.

working so much that you don't have enough time to do the minor repairs yourself, can be expensive.

case in point - my bathroom sink that i have been battling with over the past year. i'd tame the beast, then it would come back at me, and then i'd tame it again. the sink roared back and not being able to take time off from work, i was pretty much forced into calling a plumber to come in on a saturday.

not really an easy thing to do, so i went with Thomas E. Clark.

i scheduled an appointment. a window from 10am - 1pm was set up. i got a call at 10am saying that a plumber would be arriving in 45 minutes. he did just that. he snaked my sink, got it working properly, and didn't leave a mess, all within about an hour. i asked a few questions. he answered them. damn galvanized pipes.

$69.00 service fee
$155.00 for the sink repair

i'm pretty sure i could have gotten someone cheaper, but since it was a saturday - i was pretty much stuck. i'm pretty sure that i could have rented a snake and done the work myself, but i wanted a little professional insight upon the state of my.....    errr, the bank's 60 year old pipes. i got just a little insight.

all in all - they did the job and were completely professional.

the price??????

i don't know?

if you know of a person or company that can do this kind of work on a saturday morning at a better rate, please let me know.

Clark Plumbing was supposed to meet me between 8:30 and 10:00 am and told me it would most likely be on the early side at around 9:00. At 9:15 when I had not heard from them I called and was told the plumber was across the street. I called back at 9:40 and was told he was at another job and would call as soon as he was done. They finally called me back at 10:50 am but I had already found another plumber.

I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews unless a company is truly horrible.  In this case, I feel obligated to let others know that our entire experience with Thomas C Clark was really bad. Customer service and communication were terrible.  I don't believe they were honest about their availability, which let an entire day wasted (waiting) and over time charges beyond belief.  Had they been honest about how tight their schedule was, we would have called another company.  They have you over a Barrell on hot days.  I'm fully aware that you will pay a premium plus for almost any heating/AC company but in my 49 years, this may have been the most we were ripped off. We will not use this company ever again and regret our experience.  Not sure what's worse, a hot house or being totally taken advantage of...

My system recently broke down and wasn't cooling our house properly. After an awful experience with another plumber (Rod Miller), I had T E Clark come out. First - the individual who called me to schedule the appointment (I think his name was Mark or Matt) was fantastic and provided me a lot of education about my system and A/C in general. He actually thought I had a non-issue and I may be better watching the system over the next few days. But he said they'd be happy to come out for peace of mind to give the system a full inspection.

Next day: the rep shows up right on time, educates me even more about my system (so much more than the Rod Miller rep did). He was very patient in educating me on continued maintenance (as well as optional T E Clark services for that type of thing), but was also a no-pressure kind of guy. I didn't feel like I had to spend more money. He told me about the age of my system and what I should look out for in the future. He refilled the freon and informed me that if something happens again, it's likely due to a freon leak and I can test for that before replacing the entire unit. Some guys would leave that info out in hopes of coming back to sell me additional services.

All done in an hour. Easy and now...nice and cool!

In the past two months, I've called Thomas E. Clark twice for service. For the first visit, the heating wasn't working in one of my rental units and my kitchen faucet was rattling. I called on the weekend and received a prompt return call to schedule an appointment the following day. Carlos, did the HVAC work and Edwin did the plumbing. They were both outstanding. I was advised in advance there would be a $69 service charge for each visit. After the work was completed, I felt the total costs with service charge were fine. Yesterday, I was experiencing leaky bathroom faucets in my unit and one of my rentals. I was happy to see Edwin arrive promptly this morning. Again, he did a great job.

Even if I could find cheaper service, I'll pay a little more for professional, prompt and expert service.

We had to replace our hot water heater in short order before a pending home sale.  TEC came out and gave us an accurate estimate, and returned a few days later with the new hot water heater.  They were professional, communicative, efficient, and responsive.  So when we had another small plumbing problem that emerged prior to move out, they came and fixed it the same day.

After that great experience, we had TEC come by and assess our new home's hot water heater, which was prehistoric.  It was also resting on a rusted base drainage pan.  TEC provided an estimate based on the water heater I wanted given the tight space, and the dimensions of a new drainage pan.  They had the pan built, removed our old water heater, installed the drainage pan, and then installed the new hot water heater.  In the process, they had to build a support platform for the new pan, which they did in an hour or so.  Each time when they were confronted with an installation problem, they adjusted and innovated to find a solution.  The price came out exactly as they'd quoted despite the extra challenge.  I was very impressed.

I will use TEC for all of my plumbing needs!

BEWARE!

I guess the DC and MD locations are tied together.  I went by the ratings for the DC location when I setup an appointment.

I was floored by the estimate for replacing two undersink water valves and removing old dishwasher/installing the new.

$900+

I know enough to know that was absurd.  Still had to pay a $99.00 charge for them just to show up.  BEWARE!  BE SMART

I used to prefer hiring solo practitioners for home repair issues.  But now I've changed my mind.  We moved into an older house a few years ago, and we've had occasion to call Thomas E. Clark three times in the past year or so, initially for an A/C problem and then twice recently for plumbing issues.  I called them the first time because we have an unusual A/C system; the plumbing issues were also significant, not simple toilet or faucet repairs.  Each time, Clark was able to send a technician quickly, and that technician was fully competent and efficient.  They diagnosed and fixed the problems and charged a fair price.  What more could you want?

I will not hesitate to call Thomas E. Clark again.

I purchased a house and had an issue with my ac leaking water from the vent to the floor.  I called Thomas e clark hoping to get some sort of help regarding this issue that I had no clue about. Turns out was a condensation/duct issue. They came out, fixed the issue (temporarily) charged me somewhat of a reasonable price, about $100 and left. A few months later I called again, (with the same issue) and was told that the fan on my outdoor unit needed to be replaced which costed me roughly $200.00. Again a temporary fix. Months later I call them again only to speak to a very rude and disrespectful supervisor named George. George talked over me, raised his voice and sounded as if he could care less that I had spent money on the same issue with no resolution. He sent the same tech out who told me I had two options: get a diagnostic for $139 or get a more thorough diagnostic for $400+. I declined because at this point I'd rather confirm that the issue can be fixed versus continuing to shell out cash. On Monday I called to speak to a manager named Mike about the issues that I had (no resolution, and a very rude George.) Mike told me he would speak to Daniel the tech and George and would get back to me within 2 days. Well that did not happen. Over a span of 2 and half to 3 weeks I called and left messages for Mike with no call back. I finally received a call back from Mike who did not apologize for not calling back. He told me wanted to take time to review the issues with Daniel. When I expressed my concerns he interrupted me and told me no, that's not what happened. Daniel said... I am absolutely disappointed in this company because they do not care complete the quality service that they advertise. My issue is still not fixed and I have wasted over $400 on the same issue on 3 separate occasions. Not to mention, when I pay for a service I actually expect to be working with a company that knows what they are doing. If you are looking to get your issues fixed, along with great customer service, this company is NOT the one to go with...keep researching!

My response:If documentation by your company had been correct, you would be aware that each of my calls were placed for the same reason. Leaking water! I never called and said that the a/c didn't work because it does, my issue is the water that leaks when the a/c is running! Each time your technician came out he found something different to charge me for. Again, no apology from your company even in your comment below. I urge you to thoroughly read reviews that are being posted before responding.  I made it clear in the first line of my post that i just purchased the home, so why would your response be if i had maintained the ac this wouldn't have happened??????? After calling 3 times for the same issue, I would think that a company would be more inclined to find out what the reason is for the leaking water. Disappointed by the review or not, I paid for a service and got no results, no apology, and no resolution as I stated before.

Buyer beware! Hidden fees! I spoke with a rep and asked them fees for sending out a technician to look at an ac unit. We were quote a $69 price,  to be waived if we chose the repairs they offered. Although I repeatedly asked, rep did not quote any more fees. After the technician came out, we were charged a $139 diagnostic fee...and the diagnosis was that the technician doesn't know what's wrong and requests a new motherboard for the unit which is less than 6 months old! This is the equivalent of taking your car to a repair shop where the mechanics are confused and being told you need a brand new transmission.

I've called this place 3 times this evening, spoken to a different phone operator each time who was not able to connect me to or ask questions to the original person I spoke to. So much for a small family business.

Originally it sounded like someone would definitely be able to come out tonight, the second time I called for an update (a few hours later, she said someone would be coming out. A few minutes later I got a call back and the operator told me the cost would be more since it is after hours, but they would still come out. She said she would call me back with an ETA.

The third time I called I spoke to a woman who could not confirm if anyone would actually be able to come tonight. I explained that I was waiting for a call back with an ETA, and she explained that they don't call back, and said there was no way anyone from there called me.

So obviously, I must be crazy.

I don't get some of these reviews.  Thomas E. Clark has installed our furnace, fixed our humidifier, serviced our furnace and AC units all at a reasonable price (after all, it's DC people) and they've done a great job.  Trust me, I've had some contractors put in new water heaters, then spring a leak, then need to service a pump...all without apology or refund.  These guys are the real deal and do quality work.  Always happy with their service.

I've used Clark for plumbing for years and they always do a fine job but just had a horrible customer service experience and will be switching to a new service--given the competition in the DC area would much rather spend my money with a company that values me as a customer.

I had an appointment this morning and the plumber called my landlord instead of me (though I ensured they had the right numbers when I made the appointment) and said they were at my house and no one was home.  This was not true as my nanny was sitting 10 feet from the front door waiting for them and no one came to the house, nor called my house.  The plumber said that since no one was home he was going to a different job and would come back to my house (of course hours later).

When I called the company they said that he hadn't been to my house but that the plumber had called and no one answered and therefore went to a different job.  I explained the call my landlord received and the customer service woman denied it happened.  I told her I was disappointed in the service, especially that there was no apology for the fact that at minimum the stories didn't make sense and at the worse the plumber was outright lying.  She refused to apologize, said that the company had done nothing wrong and that he had not come to my house and had not been able to reach anyone when calling.

disappointing all around.

Had to get the kitchen sink pipe snaked. They told me all my options and how much each would cost. Loved the service and will definitely continue to use them for my plumbing need. Highly recommend.

I don't understand some of these reviews.  Thomas E. Clark came out to my house to service my AC Condensor that had a fan fail.  They were on-time, thorough, and the tech they sent, Hector, was very fair, walked me through the process, even let me stay and chat while he worked.  He was very tidy with his work, checked and double checked his work, verified everything was working, and I even got a great price!  I highly recommend Thomas E Clark for their AC work because of how punctual, professional,  and thorough they are.  We need more people like them in the DC area.

I had a fairly good experience with this company yesterday. I found a leak in my HVAC Tuesday morning. After shopping around with other companies, I decided to go with this company based upon another unit owner in my building's recommendation. The cool thing about this company is that they have a comparable hourly rate to other companies, but if your problem is not a crazy bad emergency issue - for a few dollars more than it would cost to fix your problem in on visit, they can set up a service contract with you - which covers not one, but two visits. And as I have discovered, HVAC's do require annual (bi-annual is better) maintenance.

The technician who came out, Carlos, was punctual, well mannered - and explained what was going on with the unit to me in layman's terms.  When I asked fora better rate, he didn't dismiss me - he put me on the phone with his manager - and we were able to come to a better agreement. For this flexibility, Thomas E. Clark will have my business for years going forward....

Honestly when it comes to contractors, its not always about what you pay - but whether you feel that you were treated fairly. I will probably upgrade my rating to 5 stars if the HVAC continues to work in good condition by the time they pay me their next visit in June.

Took the day off work to get an estimate for a big job.  Not only did they not show up for the original scheduled appointment,  but they didn't show up when they rescheduled for later the same day.  It's not a major weather event,  they have no excuse for this sort of rude behavior.  Will never use them again.

I would like to update my review on this company. After receiving my letter, the company wrote me an apology letter and refunded me $100 of the overcharged amount I paid. I'm satisfied with that. I'm happy that they considered my request. I hope this doesn't have to happen to anyone else. Would I use them again..not sure, I would have to seriously consider the situation.  However, I was happy because I felt heard by the company.

I'm afraid I was not impressed by this company and would not recommend them to others.

For starters, they are expensive.  Back in August I asked them to inspect my heating and AC system.  After completing the inspection and replacing several parts, i was stunned to receive a bill for $1158.  They also recommended that I replace a furnace fan motor which would have cost an additional $800.

Last week, while replacing the furnace air filter, I noticed water accumulating under the unit.  I thought that, after the August inspection,  problems like this would not occur.  As such, I called the company to see if they would send out a technician to diagnose the problem and not charge me for the follow-up visit.  Ironically, the company representative placed me on hold and a recorded message said Thomas Clark guarantees its work.  When the rep got back on the line she said the leak was probably a result of the fan motor which I had not replaced.

I then arranged to have a technician from another company come out to fix the leak.  He quickly identified the source of the leak which, as it turns out,  had nothing to do with the fan motor.  I believe the technician from Thomas Clark would have caught this problem if his initial inspection was more thorough.

In summary, I'd only deal with this firm if you have money to spare and take their customer assurance for quality service with a grain of salt.

High marks for Thomas E. Clark.  I used their services for the first time based on the recommendation of a friend.  They quickly diagnosed the problem I was having--I needed a new water heater.  All the staff was very friendly and professional.  When we concluded that the first heater was not keeping my tenants happy, they re-evaluated my space and put in a higher-capacity water heater.  My tenants were happy, which makes me happy. I was truly pleased with the service I got from Thomas E Clark.

Used Clark since the 70. Called for a leaky faucet. Ed came and I was told I needed a new faucet and understood the leak would be fixed. The receipt for the $69 house call  did not mention any additional charges for the leak. . After a week of mix ups Clark finally returned with he new faucets. Then, at the site, I was told it would cost almost another $400 to fix the leak which was the original problem in addition to almost $800 for the new faucets. The owner Steve was not available, there was no one els to discuss it with and they said Steve would call???

Had a positive experience fixing my AC.  Servicemen called on their way to say they could arrive earlier than the given window if we were available.  We are in a condo building so the two servicemen went to the room to run tests on the unit.  They found blown fuses and capacitor was rusting.  We chose to replace them both.  In addition to the work, we paid the $99 service fee.   I was surprised that the service fee was not applied to work completed but what can you do?  Saw in other reviews that people feel its unfair to pay $100+ for a lower priced (online) part but in my opinion you are paying for their expertise and the prompt, high-quality installation.  Well worth it - happy to have it fixed!

I called for a plumber to diagnose some ceiling damage in a closet below a bathroom. The plumber came out and said the damage was old and there was no active leak. One week later, my plasterer arrived and said he could not fix the damage because the area was soaking wet. He said it was likely a wax ring needed in the toilet upstairs and cut an opening in the ceiling for the plumber to view and diagnose. I called to request a plumber and found the receptionist to be a bit short, aggressive, and rude. She did send a plumber out the same day, which I greatly appreciate. The plumber replaced the wax ring and also the toilet flapper. The charge was $400, which I found to be quite high (service fee was waived). I didn't have the luxury of comparison shopping, but have since found other plumbers who would do the same hour's worth of work at half the cost.

Thomas E Clark is exactly what you want but would never expect from a Plumbing & HVAC company. I used them for Plumbing in the winter. The plumber snaked my drain and gave me advice but did not up-sell me on anything. Last night my AC quit working. I called and they sent someone out within 2 hours (he arrived at 8 pm) and fixed the problem in 30 minutes. This morning, the AC quit working, they worked me into their very packed schedule and the tech came back. My circuit breaker flipped (duhh!), he flipped it back and didn't charge me another service call!!
Thomas E Clark's prices are very reasonable, the people that answer the phones are very polite and efficient, and the techs are great. It's nice to know there's a company you can call at any time and get great reliable service.

When I got home from work on a hot day and discovered the compressor wasn't turning, I knew we were in for a long night.  I picked Thomas E Clark from all of the reviews in part because their hours indicated they were still open.  While I got the answering machine, they called me back right away.  Although they had no openings for the following day, they asked if I would like to leave my name and number in case someone cancelled.  Within an hour, they called back to tell me they would be coming to our house and gave us a time range, which they met.  The technician identified the issue right away and got it working again fast.  They were very professional, reasonably priced, and courteous.

My central AC crapped out the week before the July 4th holiday, and as I was out of town I wasn't able to coordinate anything till I got back - today, July 3rd.

Yesterday I called these guys for an appointment. They came out today, found and showed me the problem (a dead compressor), then made a few calls and had a whole replacement unit (the outdoor fan/compressor assembly) in and installed SAME DAY.  TODAY, July 3rd. Amazing - can't recommend them enough based on this experience.

Think of the worst customer service you could possibly ask for and that's what you get at Thomas E Clark.  We called on a Sunday night w/ a water heater issue and by Thursday still did not have a straight answer about whether / how / if they could fix or replace the tank.  And calls went unanswered.  Servicemen were dispatched to our house twice (failing to even introduce themselves to us) and when they gave us a rough quote of the cost it was TWICE as expensive as what we ultimately got from another plumber, who did the job in 4 hours.  The failure to fix the problem is troubling, but the abhorrent customer service was really the deal breaker.

I had a low flow problem with my shower, and within days of calling Clark it was fixed. They're very flexible in timing and waived the service fee for the second day of work.

Called because I had an issue with my AC. Before the person came I was told the charge would be $104 for the technician to come out, look at the unit and present me with an estimate before moving forward with any repairs. That seemed reasonable. A normal person would assume then that I should expect to pay $104 for the visit, plus any repairs, if I elect to do them.

The technician (Daniel) ended up handing me a bill for over $200, because it turns out its $104 for the visit and there's another $100 and change for them to actually LOOK at the unit. That was not at all what was discussed or disclosed with the person on the phone (Warren I believe his name was).

I know these things are expensive and have no illusions about the fact that it costs money for people to come out, but they clearly (intentionally or not) omitted a very important piece of the cost (after all, under what plausible scenario would a customer want someone come out to a house and NOT look at a unit  - that's clearly the minimum amount of work someone has to do - so to quote someone $104 is just dishonest).

Daniel didn't disclose that extra $100 until after he'd looked at the unit, claiming the dispatcher should have told me about that fee. I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt, but its pretty shady. Daniel, for what its worth, seemed knowledgeable and honest.

-- Update: I called and left a voicemail for the firm about my disappointment. Also left a message with the main office. They didn't call back (but they called super quickly when I left a voicemail asking for service... go figure!). Seeking a 2nd opinion, I called another firm to come look today. They reached the same conclusion as Thomas in terms of whats wrong (so thats the good part), although unlike Thomas they had some low-tech suggestions to solve the issue. Unfortunately those didn't work, but I have to give that other firm credit: they attempted the cheap fix first.  As a further point of comparison, this other firms cost for visiting was $129, diagnostics included. Thomas Clarke quoted me $2,600  for a 3 ton R-22 Payne air conditioner (which are generally considered among the most economical units you can get). The other firm quoted me $1,950 and offered to take the $129 that I paid today off.

My advice: pass.

USE THESE GUYS IF YOU NEED A PLUMBER!!!!

We had a clogged exterior drain. I had called the other guy without using yelp...Boo me...the other guy wanted to start with tearing up my driveway to fix the clog and took some negotiating to get him to try to unclog it first, a fruitless endeavor at best.

I called Thomas E Clark after finding glowing recommendations here and I was excessively pleased with my service encounter with Andy S. This guy and his company are top notch professionals.

I told him what happened and had been happening and he went right to work. He used a vacuum cleaner, water, the biggest screw driver I have ever seen and skill to unclog the pipe that the other guy had said would need to be dug up. It seems that when the contracted who was flipping the house before I bought it has been flushing everything down the drain. Besides a heavy amount of mud and silt there were a few small rocks, a bungee cord clip, and a large rubber pipe coupler which was the base of the problem. He pulled it all out and stuck a hose in the drain...SUPRISE all the water went down and he didn't need to dig up the driveway and he knew he didn't have to dig up the driveway cause he did this thing called trying other options first. Something the other guy is apparently unable to perform, or didn't want to cause then he wouldn't have to do it and the company can charge me more. ( Don't know if you can tell but I was a little mad at the other guy) Andy also spent time telling me how to perform preventative maintenance to keep it from happening again, which equals concern for the customer.

Now, Andy S. did mention that they may have to dig up the driveway and pipe, but only if the other stuff was unsuccessful, but I'm okay with that because it is an honest assessment and a professional advisement. So Andy went right to work and was successful...but the other guy took 45 minutes and said the pipe was clean and we would need to dig up the driveway cause the water wasn't going down....hmmmm curious...what was he doing then? Eh, Who cares I won't use them again. I WILL be using Thomas E. Clark again though!!!

The other guy was played by a plumber from John C. Flood. Check out my less than pleased evaluation of them if you'd like, if not just do not use them.

I recently called Thomas E Clark due to a sewage issue at my house.  I couldn't have been happier with the service.  Though I know less than nothing about plumbing the plumber from Thomas Clark was very fair and honest with me.  I felt like he fixed my issue without overcharging me.  Less than a month later I had an issue with my hot water heater.  I again used Thomas E Clark and again was very satisfied.  They fixed the issue, did not try to up sell me and charged me a more than fair price.  I highly recommend Thomas E Clark and will be using them for any future plumbing issues.

The customer service was impeccable. Everyone was friendly and professional. They were extremely responsive and were able to show up within 24 hours of my initial call. They even showed up on time a few days after a snow storm when the roads were difficult to navigate. Their work was excellent. The experience would have been perfect, but the price was outrageous. They ended up charging $320 per hour for repairs that were more or less routine. (Their mantra is we charge by the job not by the hour, which means they completely overcharge) A+ on quality and service. Complete fail on price.

Very disappointing.  Called this company because a neighbor recommended them.  They came for initial visit, and then planned to have 2 new toilets installed.  Trying to get information about a different toilet all week.  Phone calls, emails, and this is what I know - regular height toilet $500, comfort height $700 by email.  Emailed back with a question about why so much more because I looked up the brand of toilets online, no apparent reason for a $200 difference.  Called again this morning, all I got was the same numbers reiterated.  Asked to speak to supervisor, he's on vacation.  Was told to wait for the plumber who has more information.  Plumber arrived, what info did he have? Regular height toilet $500, comfort height $700.  Couldn't tell me model numbers or any specifics, just that it costs them more for taller toilets.  Told me to call the office, the same office that told me to talk to the plumber.   May try one more round, but why is it so hard to get information?

This review is for plumbing, I'll update tomorrow after the HVAC people come.

I LOVE this company.  I had a leaky bathroom for years.  I have many other companies come out and kept pointing me in the wrong direction (once it was the tub, then a leaky toilet) and the problem was never resolved.   Then I found Thomas E Clark...

The technician that came out was fabulous.  After about an hour, he couldn't find the problem, but he assured me that he would find it.   He had to cut a few holes in my walls, but sure enough, he resolved the issue and it hasn't leaked since!  This was about 5 months ago..

I called up T-E-C on Friday late afternoon before Memorial day Weekend with a broken A/C unit and a forecast of 90F through the weekend.
I had taken apart the evaporator unit on my A/C and all signs pointed to my system being low on refrigerant.
I got a call back within about 2 hours and was offered an emergency visit over the weekend --which I should have taken, but thought it wouldn't be too bad-- or a visit on the next Tuesday (the next business day).

They dispatched JJ to my house and called me about 30 minutes before he showed up.

He quickly confirmed that the unit was low on refrigerant and it took him about 15 minutes to get everything charged and back to normal.

There was one  small mixup with the dispatcher - I told them that the condenser was on the roof and that access required an 8/10ft ladder. He informed me that it wouldn't be a problem.  When JJ showed up he only had a 6ft ladder and a 30 ft ladder. It looked like it was going to require a second visit but JJ made do with the 6ft ladder - and some good climbing skills.

From my experience - I'm happy to recommend these guys.

Called for routine maintenance on two AC units.  No quote on the phone, other than the $69 service call.  Both units less than 5 years old, so nothing broken.  Quote at the house- $369, plus the service fee.  $400+ for this work is outrageous.  I should have sent him away, but I already took time off work to meet him.  Will use All-Pro Services or Polar Bear AC next time.  They've charged about $90 per unit in the past.

I can't say enough good things about this company. When you call on the phone you get a person! not a machine. They ask you tons of questions-there is a formal process. The hot water at my apt was out. My landlord was out of town so I offered to deal with it. Carlos R. was my plumber. He was set to arrive between 9-12. He called at 8:45 to say he was on his way and arrived about 9:15. He immediately assessed the problem. The water heater was 18 yrs old and needed to be replaced!!! Since I was already charged the $99 service fee for coming out for the water heater I had him look over the toilet, sinks and shower to assess whether they would need any work in the future to save me a future service fee. He was happy to help, listed some items and gave me estimates for costs. Since we had to wait approval and payment from my landlord he had to come back another day. Again I had a service window of 8:30am-12. He called at 8:45 to say he would be there and arrived at 9:30. He was here for 4hours! I dont know much aboutwater heaters but it seemed complicated. The access to the water heater was difficult so he had to remove boards in the closet and replace them later.  The hot water was working before he left. The water heater is under warranty for 6 years and the other parts and labor for 2 years. I don't know about other employees, but I can't say enough good things about Carlos. I absolutely hate being a young woman home alone dealing with repairs. I don't know much about plumbing, appliances etc as I've never been a home owner. So I don't know if I'm being ripped off or not. And I'm alwas nervous inviting strangers into my home. You can never be too careful! But Carlos put me instantly at ease. Polite, professional. He called me Maam and patiently answered all my questions so I could relay everything to my landlord later. I really had confidence he knew what he was talking about and was a real proficient at his trade. My landlord paid, not me, but the price seemed reasonable. I saw some other reviews for other companies charging over $3000! My cost was $1574 and that included the new water heater and labor. Part of that involved an access fee for the time it took to take apart the boarding surrounding the heater to get the old one out and new one in and then put it back together. All in all, as far as repairs go, this was as smooth and pleasant as such a situation could be. My only complant would be that they couldn't come same day I called or the next day. They came two days later. But 1) my situation wasnt an emergency like a leak or flood so maybe they come quicker then Id hope and 2) I think they just do good work and are always busy. Def give them a call! I would use them again.

James was my technician.  Overall, I had a good experience.  My A/C wasn't working.  I called first thing in the morning and they came out within a couple of hours.  James was professional and very nice.  He was able to resolve the problem quickly.  I live in a condo building and the issue was the breaker on the unit on the roof had tripped.  He only had to flip a switch to get it working again.  However, the flip of that switch was pretty expensive.  They charge $99 just to come out.  That's fine with me.  But $55 to turn a switch?!!  That's ridiculous.  So beware.  Good service but expensive.

Matt, one of Thomas E. Clark's employees, is great!  He has been to our house on two separate service calls and has been beyond professional each time.  He is knowledgeable and is willing to explain what he's doing and why.  Overall, our experience with Thomas E. Clark has been very good and we will definitely use them again in the future, but I wanted to especially give kudos to Matt!

Within 24 hours I had a bathtub faucet break AND my boiler died. I called Thos E Clark because I'd had a representative out a few weeks earlier to talk through potential bathroom remodels (George) and thought the service was good without being overly pushy.

I thought Thos E Clark really delivered good service. First, they split the service charge ($69) between the plumber and the boiler guys, which was appreciated. Second, the President himself (Mike Hartman) got involved when the cause of the boiler breakdown was elusive. He knew I was frustrated that we didn't exactly figure out what was going on (we think the pipes froze because I'd had the temp down when I was out of town, but we don't know if that was the cause or the result of the failure) and he really did his best to take on the matter personally. He also offered a discount on some follow up maintenance recommended by the technician AND he called a week later to check in and make sure everything was okay. While we didn't 100% figure out the problem (apparently boilers are an art not a science), I think Thos E Clark did everything that they could and delivered caring customer service. I have two bathrooms to remodel in the near future and will definitely give them a call for a bid.

I called Thomas E. Clark to take a look at my furnace which had stopped pumping warm air into the system. The furnace was working but not sending warm air throughout the system. The tech took a look and the wand used by the furnace to know when to turn on needed to be replaced. Tech told me it would be $199.00 for the service plus $70.00 for the service call. Total $268.00. I researched the part online and it can be purchased for $12.00 to $20.00. Total time the tech was in my home, 45 minutes. The part took roughly 15 minutes to replace. The tech also quoted me another service at $199.00 as well. I guess all services start at $199.00 and go up from there.
I understand the need to charge a service call fee in case nothing is wrong or they cannot fix the problem but to tack on the charge in addition to the service is just unreasonable. I will not be using them again for any services in the future.

This company did wonderful work for us with plumbing repairs and the installation of a new wall mounted combi-boiler.  Finally happened across TEC after trying a few other plumbing companies that could not solve our problems.  By far the most professional administrative and plumbing staff that I have found.  Couldn't recommend their plumbing division more highly!

Wonderful experience. Found out I had a service line gas leak in my kitchen mid-morning Friday. Washington Gas came out by late morning and turned off gas to the whole house and said I'd need to find my own repairman to fix the leak then they could turn the gas back on. I saw my whole day being taken up by this emergency. Called a number of other companies who said they couldn't come until after 4 or until Sat and that I'd be charged overtime rates. Called Thomas E Clark and they said they would get someone over within 4 hours. Sure enough, the guy showed up an hour after I called, fixed the problem within 30 mins, turned my gas back on, checked all the pilots on the other appliances in my house and I was good to go. The whole thing cost less than $150, they guaranteed the fix for a year and now I have my afternoon back again. (Rafal, the plumber, also gave me some other maintenance tips while he was here which I really appreciated)

Had a good experience with this company. Technicians arrived on time, diagnosed issues quickly, had the parts required on the truck and set to work making repairs. Things were a bit hectic for me when they finished and I signed the invoice and proffered my credit card. It wasn't until I had a chance to review it later that it occurred to me that it was a bit pricey to charge the same parts & labor fee for each of three valves that were installed at the same time. Included with the invoice was a feedback card with an attached lengthy explanation of why charges might seem high - no doubt an attempt to counter the knock on this outfit in reviews for its seemingly high prices. I duly filled it out and included my comments regarding the pricing I had an issue with in my case. A couple of days later I got a call from the owner, Michael Hartman, saying that I was correct and that there should have been a discount on 2 of the 3 valves, for which he would send me a refund check. Said check arrived a couple of days later.

Called Clark Plumbing on Monday morning and arranged service call for Tues afternoon between noon and four. Explained urgent circumstances of 94 yr old man living alone with clogged pipe plumbing issue. He is attended from noon to four by an in home health nurse Was told there was a $69 charge for plumber. Fine, expected that. Was called Tuesday afternoon at four advising it'd be five for the plumber to arrive...they were running behind. Explained I cannot keep the health nurse after her scheduled four o'clock departure, so had to re-schedule for following day again between noon and four. STRIKE ONE. Plumber arrived as planned shortly after one on Wednesday. Housekeeper called (I could not be there) and informed me the charge was to be $292.00. I recoiled at that having a fair knowledge of what was needed to correct the clogged pipe issue, but begrudgingly agreed as George (the 94 yr old owner had been without water for 3 or 4 days). I could have denied the cost, had the Clark plumber go away after having paid the $69 service fee and tried to re-schedule another firm know it's likely be two or three more days before the new plumber could come out to fix the problem. Clark had me over a barrel. So I spent $292 for a snake job to clear the clog, the work took less than an hour total and included no new parts. An hour's work for $292. Outrageous! STRIKE TWO. Called and talked to plumbing supervisor about charge and was informed that Clark does not charge by the hour but rather by a list of services. Work done included removal of trap and snaking main drain. I had removed the trap myself so the work was started before he began his effort. Was told the normal cost of the service provided was actually $ 50 or so more than I was charged. Bottom line, little satisfaction with talking to the supervisor. STRIKE THREE. I believe the charges were excessively high because the plumber was dealing with a vulnerable pair of customers (a health nurse with limited English capability and an infirmed 94 yrs old man). I will not use Clark again and recommend any future customer to be aware and cautious in contracting them.
