I have used Gaithersburg Plumbing multiple times in the past and have been very satisfied with the work performed and with the cost. Not so this last time. While I highly recommend the quality of the work that was done, the cost was exorbitant. For 2.5 hours of labor (plus parts, which consisted of some PVC and hardware) I was charged $1,200. Assuming the parts cost $200 (which is very generous) that works out to $400/hour. Based on my calls to other plumbers, the hourly labor rate should have been about $200. By the way, I did sign-off on a written estimate before approving the job, however, had I known the work would take only 2.5 hours I never would have moved forward.
Here's the work that was done and what I was charged:
Bathrooms: Rebuild 2 shower faucets with new internal parts. $662
Kitchen: Re-configure PVC below kitchen sink to fit customer-installed disposal, connect PVC to disposal. $300
Basement: Re-configure PVC to fit new customer-purchased sump pump, remove old sump pump, drop new sump pump in well. I had already unsealed the sump pump well, cleared it of water and debris, and removed the old float. $238
The letter I received from the company in response to my complaint was unapologetic, attempting instead to justify the cost.
In the future, I'll go elsewhere for plumbing services, and will always get a time estimate as well as a cost estimate in advance of approving the job.
