Fry came to do a routine annual service on my cast iron radiator system. They arrived as scheduled and I was initially very impressed with the tech, David. He spent a long time talking to me about the system, telling me what problems to keep an eye out for, and figuring out how to bleed the brand-new, super-fancy British radiators that we'd just installed in our attic. We had to go into a crawl space to find some hidden valves that the contractor had installed, and he was really nice about that too - especially as filling up and bleeding the system required a LOT of running up and down stairs for him. In the end, he charged me for a flat hour of work at $150, which I consider very reasonable. Previously, I've had Presidential Plumbing out to service the system, and they'd told me that I urgently needed $1,400 worth of work. David said there nothing whatsoever wrong with the boiler, nothing needed to be replaced, and snorted when he heard about Presidential's estimate. When I'd spoken to Jonny (whom I believe to be either the owner or manager) earlier on the phone and told him about the estimate that I'd received, he was also skeptical and expressed that Fry doesn't replace something if it isn't broken.
It would have been very easy for Fry to come into my house, say oh yeah, you need $1,400 worth of work, for sure and head it with a nice check. So lots of kudos to them - they seem really honest!!
Unfortunately, when I went up to check the attic after David left, I found a huge puddle of water spreading all over the floor. It turns out that the plumber who installed my new radiators forgot to seal two of the radiator valves. Obviously that's not David's fault! But the valves are located on the bottom of the radiator, and would have been leaking freely the entire time he was filling and bleeding the system, so I think he should have spotted the problem (esp because he knew the radiators hadn't been tested before). I was also bummed out to find grease smears on my newly-painted white walls and on my bathtub - he must have used a really dirty rag to catch the water from the radiator bleeding, and it left brown marks on four walls that wouldn't wash off, so I had to re-paint those areas.
I took a star off the review for these two issues but was generally very happy with the service. I'm personally very willing to put up with a lot from a company that I know won't rip me off, and Fry overall did a very job. My only advice would be to spot-check the work site for cleanliness before they leave.
