I was asked via email to write a review on Roto-Rooter as they did some work for me today. I guess I should have checked here before calling them out as although I didn't have a bad experience exactly, it certainly is concerning to read that most of the reviews here aren't positive. I also realize from reading below that I probably paid $100 more than I would for another plumber to snake out 110 ft to the main. I am also concerned about the plumber's suggestion that I pay another $150 to have a video inspection of my sewer line.
I live in a mature neighborhood and about every other yr I have to have a plumber come out about every other yrs to snake the sewer pipe out to the main, despite any root deterrent/salt etc I have put down the toilets to try to prevent root growth. Last night after doing laundry we noticed the basement flooded a little in the utility room. I as at work when I got the call from my partner that this happened, so I arranged an appointment with Roto Rooter for the next day. I really loved the online scheduling and the fact that they don't charge more for weekends or odd times; although they probably charge more overall based on what I have read recently. However, it was import to get the sew cleared Saturday morning so my partner could shower before he went to work and so that I wasn't up all day waiting for the appt and also that we didn't have to wait until Monday.
I was really pleased with the call back, scheduling and even when the plumber (Dwayne) arrived, which was about 11am, within the 9am to 1pm window. My only real concern was after he did the work, he said it would be $379. Earlier he had quoted $269 and I had a $40 coupon, so I figured it would be $229. I asked about the $150 more and he said I needed a video inspection of my sewer, as he clear 110ft but didn't know if he got to the main or not. I've lived in this house over 10 yrs and this has to be the 5th or 6th time I've had the roots cleared to the sewage mainline and I've never had a video inspection, plus I believe each time they went some where btwn 100 to 110 ft out to the main, which is what Dwayne said he did. He also said he turned on the washing machine downstairs and got good water flow but he didn't know if he got as far out as the sewer mainline or not. When I told him I never had a video inspection of the sewer line before, Dwayne laughed like I was missing some kind of joke and said I should have had it done. It's the only way they can guarantee anything. I asked what they guarantee and he again said the guy calling would explain. I asked him if the other guy was coming out today, as I had to get sleep for work tonight, and he said no, he would call today to make an appointment for another time. I then asked why I was being asked to pay for the video inspection today, if they are doing the work another time and he said that they like to get the money up front. I told him that I would pay for the video inspection if and when it is done but not ahead of time and paid him $229. He left and gave me a card for someone who cleans up basements, telling me I also needed to have this done. Later that afternoon the second guy called, woke me up but I was still trying to sleep, so I let it go to vmail.
I'll probably end up speaking with the second guy who called about the video inspection appointment today or Monday but my question is what does this guarantee? If it just guarantees you got all the roots and that it will last a year or less, than that is not much of a guarantee for $150. I already expect to have this done every other year, regardless of what I put down the pipes to deter root growth and usually I don't have to have it done more than every other yr. Dwayne was getting good water flow, so it seems like the pipe was cleared and I'm pretty sure all the other plumbers who have done this in the past never went more than about 110 ft out to reach the mainline, so the distance he cleared is about the same as everyone else, none of which told me I needed a video inspection. In fact the topic of needing a video inspection didn't come up until afterwards and it was just packaged around the original service, which leads me to be a little concerned. I know in arranging the appointment, everyone I spoke to, I told them that most likely the problem was the roots which I have to have cleared every year or 2. When I told this to Dwayne when he was putting my quote together, he said something odd. It was something like once he cleared the roots out of the pipe to the mainline, he would see what other problems I had, or something like that. Basically I was surprised as when I told him what I thought was the problem, he came back with something that indicated that I probably had more than just that issue. Anyway, I'm trying to get some feedback from a few sources on whether I really need the video inspection and then I will speak with your rep about it and what it guarantees me.
