Mr. Nance is not licensed; however, when he quoted the job, he seems really nice and clean cut and he really did seem like a stand-up guy, so I decided to hire Mr. Nance instead of a licensed contracted who actually quoted the job at a lower price.
My biggest mistake was not inspecting his work. I trusted that he would do fine. So, when it came time to pay him, I did a quick walkthrough, but I didn't bother to closely inspect anything.
After I had paid him in full for the job and he had gone, my wife and I found that he had made some pretty massive mistakes and not completed quite a bit. Took about 20 hours of work for us to fix everything.
Mistakes:
-the biggest mistake he made was drilling a hole right in the side of my main plumbing stack. It looks like he forgot his stud-finder and was trying to find a stud as there is a line of holes drilled across the wall. That repair was pretty costly
-when Bill installed the shower pan, he filled the spacing around the drain pipe with mortar. (the extra space is required by regional building code). the shower pan had to be picked up again and the mortar scraped out of the area.
-the tile that Bill put in was not anywhere close to even. I bought Bill really nice tile spacers, but evidently, they didn't do the job. There was variation of almost double the width of the spacers in some places.
-the trim was not even, and it was placed too close to the door on the edges around the door. He also straight up didn't trim the bathroom or the back side of one of the doors.
-the edges of the counter weren't cut even close to straight. I will have to remove the countertop and recut. the end caps also weren't placed on the counter.
-two of the doors that he installed wobbled. I had to remove the trim and place more shims and nails to hold the doors solid.
-the threshold on one of the doors was fastened a quarter inch above the floor and not well. I had to reinforce it to keep it from moving up and down.
Incomplete work for which he was paid in full:
-he fastened in the shower base, but just left the shower walls loose. He also didn't connect the shower drain, so I had a big black pipe sticking out of the floor of the shower.
-he didn't connect the drains on either the kitchen sink or the bathroom sink.
-he didn't trim the bathroom at all--I had to do that.
-he didn't trim the back side of one of the doors.
-the drywall work I paid him for was only partially complete.
-it was detailed in our contract that he would dispose of waste. However, there are tons of baseboards and full black trash bags in our yard. We had to fill an extra trash can for the next two weeks.
After the fact, the only thing I asked Bill to cover was the repair of the drain pipe that he drilled a hole in. If he had, I probably wouldn't have left this review. I know it's tough out there, and I really don't want damage anyone's ability to make ends meet. But, that was really the last straw for me.
