In October 2009, on a Friday night, we noticed our old toilet in our old house was no longer flushing and filling properly. After tinkering with it a bit, we realized whatever the problem was, it was beyond our capabilities to repair it. Given that we have only one bathroom in our home, we knew we couldn't wait until Monday to address the issue. We made it through Friday night and set about locating a plumber Saturday. My husband located Rooney's Plumbing, who would be able to come out in just a few hours. We thought great.
The plumber who shows up informs we need a new toilet. No big surprise, as our current one was easily 20 years old and inefficient. We knew our labor costs would be $200-$300 as it would take some time to purchase the toilet, remove the old one, install the new one, etc. Plumber then returns with a $250 toilet, a Toto. When we began to ask him why the toilet is so expensive since we had a Home Depot ad with much cheaper toilets, we were given a whole song and dance about how great Toto is, how this toilet could flush 24 golf balls at once, and so on. After 15 minutes of arguing about the toilet, we finally acquiesced. We needed a toilet and wanted this guy out of our house. He was friendly but overly so, chatty when it wasn't needed, whistle-why-you-work which is a little much in a 1000 square foot home. $540 total later, we have a new toilet that works wonderfully, as it should for how much we paid.
But that's not the end of it. Two weeks ago, we noticed water collecting around the base our toilet, on one side. We sopped it up, tightened the floor screw down as it seemed loose and hoped we were done with it. A few days later, the water came back. Worried we had a faulty wax ring, and were accumulating water in our sub floor, we knew we had to call a plumber and so we called Rooney, figuring it's been just over a year and a half and after $540, this thing should still be working without problem. We called on Memorial Day (bad timing, yes, but we didn't want to extend the potential damage to our house any longer) as the amount of water continued to increase. We were told someone could come out between 1 pm and 4 pm and once again, we thought great!. Even if the labor was no longer covered, surely the product which we paid $250 for, had a warranty longer than 18 months.
The plumber, Larry, arrived within the given time frame, came in, looked at the toilet and declared we needed a new one. As my husband asked him incredulously that we needed a new toilet and explained to him we bought this toilet less then a 2 years ago from one of his employees, suddenly we needed just a new tank. As my husband and I continued to ask why it was that the tank was cracked after such a short amount of time and why we paid $250 for something they would not stand behind, Anthony became increasingly defensive. At various times we heard that you should always ask the plumber what kind of toilet they have in their house. I've always used and stand behind Kohlers. (how this was relevant now, no clue), I'm incredibly busy today and have four more calls to go on and it's going to take me an hour to go get the new toilet (um, we called you to do just that...fix OUR toilet), and it just makes sense to buy a whole new toilet since the tank is going to cost just as much as a whole set (in response to why the $250 Toto we received from his company was now broken, so not really an answer). I guess out of frustration, as my husband and I were not going to acquiesce this time around and get the shaft again, he offered to try to replace the plugs at the bottom of the tank where the leak occurred, which apparently was another preference we should have known to ask our plumber - do you use rubber or metal plugs on your toilet tanks at home? Ridiculous.
He finished in about 10 minutes, all the time talking about ALL the other jobs he had to do that day and how he stands by Kohler, which were irrelevant to us entirely. As my husband is writing the check for $125 for the 30 minutes he was at our house, he all but refuses to write down the actual work he's done on our invoice, insults my husband for wanting to know what work he's done and claims he's given us some great deal because his normal emergency rate would have been $250. For all the talking he did, he never offered an apology or any explanation as to why he first said our tank was cracked when it wasn't, why our fancy toilet tank would have been cracked or why he was unwilling to stand behind the work that one of his company completed in the near past. It was completely unprofessional, totally frustrating. Our toilet seems to be ok, for now, but if we have any future issues, we know we will absolutely no be using Rooney's Plumbing again for any reason whatsoever. For the same price, I'm sure you can secure a much more professional, pleasant company who will stand by their work.
