American Handyman works by the hour ($51).  Therefore you don't know how much a job is going to cost until they are into it.  After a while working, the handyman said, This is not going to be a quick job.  Okay, too bad but now that you've started, just do it.  Three days later it was done--over $1000 to install a pre-hung door.  Granted there had to be modifications done and he did know what he was doing and did accomplish the task.  
The first day he did say he needed shims to install the door and would have to go get them.  Since I don't get paid $51 an hour, I went and got them.  Not good planning on his part.
The reason for the low rating is not the hourly system but the dishonest tabulation of the hours.  As mentioned by someone, they do charge for driving time (at least to the job).  We did not know that but okay.  The total number of hours did not look right so we questioned it.  We had written down his hours.  After some back and forth, he said, Maybe I made a mistake and he changed the bill.  We ended up feeling that we were dealing with someone less than honest and would not hire them again.  If you do, keep track of the time!

Bill from American Handyman renovated an old, ugly wet bar area in the house I recently bought. He really impressed me with the variety of skills he possessed. He demolished the area , then put in a new countertop, all new tile, a Mexican style sink, and painted all wood areas. There were a few very minor glitches but the work did get done in a reasonable amount of time at a very fair price. Bill was always reliable, showed up when he said he would, and kept me informed every step of the way.   Highly recommended.

The worker was rushed to leave since his boss called him for probably another job. Couple things to mention.
1) the gravels at two sections I asked him to removed were left undone.
2) Few leaking resulted from the new irrigation replaced.

Overall, the price was reasonable, work done okay, but rushed and messy. Won't call them for work further.

I would now like to add that the quality of work is as awful as their attitude and price. This was the after product of patching up my drywall. At first I couldn't complain because it was still wet when he left but days later it still looks bad. Cmon! I do a better job than that. How are you guys still in business??

I had a very negative experience with them. The quality of the work is ok but the way they handle customers is below horrible. Specifically, I was told that their technician will work full day. He showed up on time but then disappeared for 2 hours looking for supplies (being a can of plaster)... And I thought they should come prepared.

Then there was a brief period of work and voila - technician is gone for the day. Needless to say, I was charged for 7 full hours of work. When I tried to resolve the issue, I got yelled at and was accused of making it up. Again, there was a family member at the premises observing the work. Then the technician called and insisted that there is nothing wrong with his math abilities and that  he indeed worked for 7 hours.

Just so you have an idea of what was done: a lonely hole in the wall 3x3 feet for $440.00

To all of the aggrieved customers: the company's AZ Registrar of Contracts (ROC) license # is 258243 and there is a complaint section at the ROC's website. Just in case all other measures to deal with them fail.

Had someone come out to my house yesterday. Being from the East coast I'm used to not so nice individuals. I have only had positive encounters since I moved out here a year ago, until yesterday. Would never recommend this company to anyone. Rude at explaining why they couldn't help me, 15 minutes or less later 51 dollars.

Very unprofessional and dishonest! Stay away! Look at other the other negative reviews before calling these guys!!! This company attempted to charge $75+  for an estimate even though we were told in advance that there is no charge for an estimate as is the norm with other companies we have spoke with. We were also provided a quote that was three times the other existing quotes for work and when questioned about the disparity in pricing, the installer grabbed the estimate and angrily stormed out. When given a chance to make this situation right, the person I spoke with on the phone instead became defensive, angry and abrasive.

I would not recommend this company at all and I suspect with such unprofessional and dishonest business practices, they will soon close

I believe the first handyman skill should be is drywall repair. This is one skill set  I am not good at and I thought calling a handyman service could repair 2 ceiling holes (4 x 4) and a drywall seam that was showing  were fairly simple. Patch and texture.

First, he talked way too much......1/2 the repair bill was him talking and doing no repair. Then he charged me $24.60  for materials and $177.00 for labor.   WTF... 2 pieces of 1 x 1 drywall and joint compound. OK... I can kind of  get over that.

The repairs looked OK because the joint compound and texture was still wet, but the next morning when everything was dry...it was awful. One repair, the repair had a big crack and also you could see the seams and screw holes because he used a piece of drywall that was thinner than the original and filled it in with joint compound. This is what he told me. The second repair you, could see the seams and screw holes. I think he used the right thickness of drywall, but not really sure.

The handyman's skill for medium  knockdown texture sucks. He could not remotely get close to the basic knockdown texture. He used a sponge???...No one with basic drywall skills uses a sponge for medium knockdown texture.

I did call and and email about the crappy repair. The same tech came out and tried to repair and retexture the previous repair. It's OK, but still not what I CONSIDER A GOOD DRYWALL REPAIR.

Eventually, I went over all the second visit repairs and re-applied joint compound, resanded and retextured everything the handyman was supposed to do originally.

For $201.64, I could have done a better job repairing 2 ceiling holes and a wall seam.

I am sure they are a good handyman service company, but they are as good as the employees they hire.

I will also be emailing the owner of this company a more detailed  description of what transpired when the handyman visited my house.

Next time, I will hire a drywall guy that hangs, tapes and textures sheetrock. It will avoid the frustration.

Horrible company!!! $180 for maybe an hours worth of work. The mike the handyman was late, unprepared and lazy. He spent more time talking and spent more time procrastinating than working. He work was garbage at best. He left the work area a mess. He knew he was paid by the hour and took his time to get as much money as he could. These are the lazy scam artists you need to look out for.

I had a door sweep issue.  The service person told me what might fix it.  He went to the store an bought a few parts which did not fix the problem.  3 hours of service time and $150 and the issue was no better than when the handyman arrived.  The service man was very pleasant but when he said certain parts might be able to fix it and the next day I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and found the parts, I was disturbed because he supposedly had gone to one of those stores and did not bring back any parts that could fix the door sweep but I was charged for $22.80 for parts and about an hour of time while he shopped.

Still a one star.  Ratings speak of your business. My sink was installed without any modification by another professional handyman service company.  Your handyman did no work and you charged me 68 dollars.

This is the second time I have used this service and both times they have done good work at a fair price. Courteous, neat and timely. A pleasure to do business with. I will continue to use their services for all of the odd jobs around the house.

I recently had a remodel done in my Oro Valley house. New access to my master closet, new solid wood doors, barn door to master bath etc. Robert did the work and I could not be more pleased. He showed up on time, worked diligently throughout the say, suggested more improvements as the work progressed that were great, finished on time and cleaned up after himself each day. If you want a great job, call these guys. They are the best.

These guys did a great job with some sheet-rocking, texturing, light install, and other miscellaneous projects. I really enjoyed having them and was pretty excited with the finished result.

Needed a new faucet in kitchen and a slide out drawer repaired.  Frank was right on time, courteous, went to Ace to get parts, took all supplies out and returned them, was done quickly.  Very satisfied with work done.  Would definitely use again.

Beware of this company. Intimidation. Threats and shoddy work.

They actually just called me and screamed at the top of the lungs after trying to fleece money from me from shoddy and incomplete work done on my 89 year old mom's house that was supposed to have been done in a day as we had been agreed over a week ago on the phone and in person with their person they sent to her house.

They now are claiming it is a three day job and were gone for several hours not even working !

I had another handyman wanting to do the work who had also quoted a day to complete the job but I went with American Handyman as I had used them before and didn't know the other company, what a Mistake!

They then tried to invoice me showing all painting done yet not even 1/3 done.
Luckily I got photos and when I called them about this they screamed at me and then texted me to pay or they would lien my 89 year old mom's house.

I offered to split the bill to try to resolve this and to pay the labor in half and that I would pay all the materials (2 cans of paint barely used) which was way more than fair after they milked the clock and disapperared for hours and took advantage of my mom, but they texted Pay or be liened.

Intimidation and threats. WOW.  

Run Run Run from this company. This is taking advantage of elderly people and an unprofessional and beyond acceptable  business practice.

I just moved to Tucson. I'm disabled and needed help getting my furniture put together. I called in the morning and was so happy when I heard there was availability in the schedule to come the same day!
I was so impressed with Wes because he not only was polite, pleasant and decent but efficient and quick! I will definitely be calling again when I get the one last piece I ordered! Very happy customer here! 10/10

We received a quote for insulation to be blown into a crawl space in our detached workshop and an exhaust turbine to be installed, we had already purchased the turbine.  We received a quote the same day we called and they scheduled the work within 3 days.  The quote was excessive, but they would get it done quickly.  We were told they would be here on Tuesday between 9 and 9:30 and have to leave by 3.  They arrived at 10:00, blew in the insulation and were gone after 2 hours and 15 minutes.  That included a run for additional insulation.  The next day one person arrived at 8:30 am to install the exhaust turbine,  he completed the job a 11:00 am.  He presented a bill that was almost $500 dollars more than the quote.  I thought he was going to reduce the amount owed because they spent less than 5 hours on the job, but he increased the total.  I would never recommend this company for any project.  Did I mention we paid almost $4,000 for this work.

I am over the moon with the overall experience. I had left a message on Sunday evening, and they called me back 1st thing Monday morning. I had a blank slab interior door that need to be installed. Other companies I called would not even install the door because we did not purchase it from them, or they would not return a phone call. We scheduled for a Friday. Bill was right on time. Bill explained everything to me and what my expectations should be after the install. My expectations were far exceeded. The craftsmanship is superior and the tradesman was very professional. I cannot be more pleased. I highly recommend.

Gutter was hanging and had fascia rot so they fixed it, painted it and wow looks like new!!  Fixed my GFI and a fan in laundry room done. Excellent work and now my go to handyman!!  Highly recommend

Unfortunately, not a good experience.  When making the appointment, I was not informed that the first meeting would be to assess the work that needed to be done, even though I explained my needs over the phone.  Chris, the representative who arrived at my home, was pleasant and professional, but through no fault of his own, was not prepared and let me know that he needed to go to the store to try and find the materials needed.  This would be an additional hourly charge of $51.  I called Herb, who makes the appointments and to whom I spoke with regarding my needs, and my experience quickly went from disappointing to negative.  He was abrupt and coarse in his communication with me as I tried to explain that I could have easily purchased the materials beforehand and been prepared when the representative arrived at my home.  I tried to explain to him that it would have been helpful when I called to schedule the appointment if he would have explained the process. Herb's customer service skills need an overhaul and that's putting it nicely.  I did not proceed with the service.

I can't express how happy they made me. They are miracle workers. They repaired some fire damage in my kitchen, but also fixed a dent in the plaster in a wall next to the kitchen. Bonus: they fixed the loose handle on the refrigerator! Very swift, very professional, very pleasant.

This review is on customer service-  Herb, you are failing the consumer

I recently spoke to HERB on the phone.  

My family has been customers of american handymen-  given them of our hard earned money to do a good job.  They did small jobs to big ones that we have been pleased with thus far.  But what I'm NOT pleased with is that they cannot provide the SIMPLEST request--- a RECEIPT.  

I explained to HERB that my 89 year old father's cooler was fixed a month ago by one of his technicians.  Unfortunately, it stopped working today.  I called Herb to try and get someone out there to fix the cooler again, to which he explained that coolers are not covered under warranty and he doesn't have technicians around to fix it until monday.  I said fine, how much would it cost to have it repaired again?  He said I don't know.  When I asked if he could look it up on the invoice, he said he doesn't have that for us. RED FLAG.  Money is not an issue with us we will pay THOUSANDS to make sure that our parents are comfortable, it's a matter of principal.  Meanwhile, an 89 year old man has to sit in his 104 degree house for a week until he can get someone over to fix a problem that should've been fixed permanently the first time.  Now it has become a matter of principal.

Here's the principal- when I asked HERB for a copy of the receipt for all the repairs that we have had done to the house for the last year, he said that he cannot provide one and that had we requested one, he would've given us them that day, but now that time has passed, he can't seem to give us one.   As a CONSUMER, we want records of all the repairs that we have had done for our parent's house, because we live out of state and an 89 year old man won't be able to keep track of all those records.  He says that they are all filed away in storage.  When I asked if he can retrieve them from storage, he haughtily replied no no no, I'm NOT doing that.   RED FLAG.  What type of business does not have a record of the work provided readily available?  Every company that I've done business with, have records of EACH and EVERY transaction and service provided to clients and customers so that when someone wants a record in the future, the company can easily provide them with one. So, it is natural that I uphold every business to the same standards. It protects the business owner and the customer from any snags that they might run into.

So please, HERB, if you are reading this, please take the time to go to your storage unit, and find the records of our repairs so that we can keep track of our 89 year old father's repairs.  Let's put egos aside so that we can solve the problem.  We are expecting them as soon as possible so that we may keep them for our records.  We look forward to amicably resolving this issue so that your technician may come BACK and fix the cooler again, I'm not the handyman, you all are.  So PLEASE make this easy on us and find the records, and in the meantime, let's fix the cooler.

Absolutely worthless. Contract breaker. Plumber incompetent. Never had a leak until after the plumber visited.  'Owner' denied that I called about a bathroom problem at all. Yet he installed the lavatory on his first visit.The timing of one of the posts leaves me even more suspcious of this company. Non professional. Not to be trusted. Rude!
I'm leaving out details of a phone conversation which should have resulted in a positive resolution. But whoever handled my call pretended to be confused so that the call ended.
Hmmn! The plumber who came to my home is a 'golden year' individual named Mike. I called AH  on 01/11 or 01/12 to have the plumber return to correct his error. He was here for les than 10 minutes. Whether this is the same Mike in the post about how wonderful AH is makes me wonder if there is a scheme to scam seniors out of money. I am a senior.

Responsive, reasonably priced, good workmanship. Called to have windows resealed after an intense monsoon storm. Received a prompt callback from the owner. Work scheduled and completed the following day. They work on an hourly rate plus materials. I'll use them again.

Robert was amazing!  He was on time, very thorough and honest.  Robert repaired my dining table by taking it apart, finding the problem, repairing the problem, reassembling it and making sure it was done correctly.  If there were any things that were not perfectly correct, he made sure they were solved before leaving.  It is hard to find reliable service for a fair price but American Handyman is definitely a diamond in the rough!   I highly recommend you try them before any one else, especially if you want something done right.

Now that the Golden Years are here... American Handyman is my choice to fix all the problems that arise in my house.
Today he rebuilt all the parts in our bathtub/shower. The tub drain plug was fixed, the spout diverter valve, moen cartridge replaced, shower hose and a shower grab bar installed. The bath sink pull up stopper lever and stopper replaced.  My water heater got drained after 2 years and had lots of white calcium in the tank.
Also found my water ball valve is broke and is scheduled for repair.  Thank you Herb, Carman,John and Bill.

Short version:

Poor customer service, shoddy work, no attention to detail. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

Long version:

We hired American Handyman to do a replace the weathered wood on a metal support structure and spray paint the metal black at a rental property that we have and manage ourselves remotely. This repair was meant to be a stop gap repair until we could do a full gate replacement. My initial request was for him to give me a call when he was actually at the property looking at the gate so we could discuss a plan. He was confused about why I would want to do so. When I explained that it was to develop a plan and a price, he said that I could just tell him now.

I really wish I had gone with my gut and tried to find someone else, but I was under pressure to by the HOA to get repairs made, so I went ahead and gave this company the job. After arranging a good time for my tenant to have the work done, I called American Handyman to confirm. He then told me that I had the date wrong, and blamed me for getting it mixed up. I'm pretty sure I was remembering correctly, because I immediately put the date in my calendar, but regardless of who got mixed up, it was unprofessional to accuse me of the issue. After sorting out the date/time issue, he then mentioned sending 'his guy' to do the job. Up until this point, he never said someone other than himself would be doing the job.

On the scheduled day, 'his guy' shows up for 5 minutes and then leaves for the better part of two hours. When work actually gets underway, my tenant calls me saying that the gate boards are crooked and are bigger than the boards that were on there originally. I had her send me a photo of the work, and it seems like no attempt was made to make the top of the gate even. Since this was mid-job I decided to let it go and wait until the job was finished to pass a final judgement.

The job was finished. The boards were still crooked, it was spray painted white (not black as requested) and it wasn't even a complete paint job. Spots were missing everywhere, not to mention it seems like no effort was made to do a clean paint job. There was paint everywhere. At this point we decided to wait and see what we were charged for the job since this was temporary. A few days later we received a nearly $300 bill for it. Since we plan to replace the whole gate soon anyway, we debated whether or not to take the poor job to its owner and ask for some sort of recompense. We decided since the job was temporary that it wasnt worth our time and hassle to fight with the company. Boy were we wrong. The gate has been falling apart. Screws breaking off and boards falling down. The guy used the wrong screws. He used the wrong size of boards. It's a mess. Our tenant has been kind enough to jury-rig things for us until we are able to come and assess the damages and replace the gate. $300 wasted.

American Handyman Service has provided handyman services at our home 4 times since we arrived in Tucson. Miguel has been our technician for 3 of those visits. Miguel has helped us with various tasks, such as: repairing our sliding glass door, expertly hanging many pictures throughout our home, repairing a console table, and repairing a desk. He is incredibly talented and always professional and kind. Our family is grateful to Miguel and American Handyman for their help.

Arrived on time, explained what I needed done , very cheerful (wife says terrific looking) young man called Nathan started work. Replaced all (8 smoke alarms, replaced light bulbs in ceiling, fixed garage outside lights. Did a couple of other jobs and left to go home to his wife and 6 year old..ask for Nathan ..he's terrific and the price was fair.

*Short Version*
American Handyman saved me quite a bit of $$$ converting my garage into a Playroom (with Home Theater).  The work was completed quickly, professionally, and well under my budget.

*Long Version*
My wife and I live in a modest sized home, and with the addition of some little ones, we decided to convert our garage into a playroom to add some extra space.  I also managed to convince my wife that the kids would really enjoy watching their Disney movies on a 1080p projector, displayed on a 200 inch screen.  I'm pretty tech savvy but I knew I'd need help with building a projector screen and cooling the garage.  I had some ideas on how I could accomplish this, which I discussed with American Handyman.  He worked up an estimate based on my ideas but also one based on a few suggested changes that would drastically reduce my cost.  First, the handyman recommended mounting the projector screen fabric directly to the wall and then finishing the edges with black trim instead mounting a custom pre-built screen to the ceiling.  Second, I was considering cooling the garage with a mini-split A/C or running additional duct work from my central unit.  I had previously been cooling my garage with a indoor standing unit and running the exhaust out the window.  The unit cooled the room well but it looked bad from the outside and I was worried about how easy it would be for an intruder to get in.  However, the handyman's suggestion to cut intake and exhaust ports in the wall addressed both of my concerns at a fraction of the cost!  My kids absolutely love the Playroom and the money American Handyman saved me made it possible to upgrade the hardware for the Home Theater.
