ABOUT BUSINESS OWNER

Gary Hoover, founder of Hoover Electric Plumbing Heating Cooling, got his start as an electrician in Michigan in the 1970s. But, it wasn't until 1980 that he founded what has proven to be one of the most trusted names in the electrical industry. Starting out small, the Hoover team was providing electric services to commercial properties. But, as the team grew stronger, so too did their following of customers, and Hoover began a full service business serving residential, commercial and industrial properties; offering maintenance, renovation, design-build and project consulting assistance.

Love these people! We needed an A/C unit for my home. Called for an estimate and Cody? Came quickly and gave us a good price that we didn't even request more quotes. The 2 installers were great. Quick & efficient. Every time they came in and out, the played with my dog each time. That goes a long way with me. Hire them!

I have old broken pipes under my home. No idea how long everything was being flushed under the home but 1 day is too long. Clean up is so expensive and Westley was like no problem! I got this. Worked for 5 or more hours under the nasty house and the plumbing is up and running!! Who would do that?? Hoover will! That's who!

I called Hoover electric this morning because my brother had lost all power to his entire house last night. He had a friend come over to install a dishwasher and somehow all of the power blew- even to the main circuit board. Hoover electric came out right away when I explained to them that my niece was on a ventilator and had to be moved out of the house because she had to have electricity so she could plug in. They are very friendly and efficient. I would highly recommend!

I wish I could give zero stars.

These people were subcontracted by the project manager. He tells me that he will never subcontract to them again.

Where to start? Was it..

--the damaged floor?
--the burnt cabinet?
--the inability to recognize which way water flows?
--the inability to identify the main water shut-off valve?
--the damage to a valve unrelated to the job at hand?
--the helpful removal of spare parts without my permission?
--the mess left behind?

There are so many things that went wrong that were caused by this company that I heartily recommend that you never, ever, ever use them for any job. If you find out that a contractor has subbed a job to them, refer the contractor to me and I will be happy to provide pictures and descriptions of the damage they caused.

The thermostat in our home stopped working due to a cut wire in the basement.  This unfortunate incident left us without a working thermostat  and, therefore, no heat.  We called Hoover Electric who installed our new furnace in March 2020.
The technician arrived on time, was polite, and figured out the problem right away-he estimated the cost to be $600 which we approved- although thought the cost was extremely high.  He fixed the issue by installing a new wire between the thermostat and furnace.  He finished the job in approximately two hours.
With the cost being so high, we contacted the office supervisor and asked how 20 feet of wire and two hours labor could possibly cost $600?  Scott called us back about our concern and he told us  that a technician's time can cost up to $500/hour.
We researched online for the average cost/hour for this type of technician in our area and it ranges from $65-$120/hour.  This is according to fixr.com and HomeGuide.com.  There are other companies in our area.  We will NOT choose Hoover Electric, in the future.

If they'd just serviced our furnace like we called them out to do, I'd give them five stars. However, we had a 2.5-year-old furnace installed by another company, which had no appointments for a month, so my husband called Hoover to come out, because they were available the following week (something like that).
Hoover showed up, did the inspection/service and told my husband our 2.5-year-old furnace was the wrong size for the house. If we were lucky it might hang on a few years.
As I was leaving work my husband called with the bad news. I put the phone on speaker and let him talk. He gave an explanation, then said our current furnace might last a year or two.
By the time I got home I was a bit fried, said give us a quote in case we do decide to replace the thing. In the meantime I would contact the original company and have them take a look. Before we left the Hoover guy told us his estimate for new furnaces (he gave several options) were good for 30 days, and we might be lucky and the existing furnace could last the winter. He also said prices might go up in the new year, so that was something to keep in mind.
With covid and labor and supply shortages it sounded plausible. But we were tired and a bit shellshocked.
I did some research, asking around. Everyone seemed to indicate the furnace we had was the right size for our home.
I called the original installer and had them came out. They ran some diagnostics and did a small patch job which should fix the error reading that came up. They also reminded us the furnace itself is still under warranty (even though the labor warranty had expired).
I don't know if the guy from Hoover was working under commission or if he was new and made some mistake in calculations. That he kept shortening the potential lifespan of our furnace was a red flag, however.

Sent person, Dustin, through contract by Home Depot & a 3rd party DRFtps.  Com a property contractor Anil Pal calling selves water solutions advisor. The whole thing was a ripp. Dustin never took water heater apart, was too busy talking non stop. Looked 12. He wasnt even going to do a D&C he never sent actual quote just said $1600 for new water heater. Charged mom n me $281.00 and theres no hot water in a pandemic. We had some hot water and now none. Dont go through them I'm reporting them and their services to the trade division whichever it is and more. And they screwed over a widow of veteran.

They only service certain zip codes in Detroit, which are selected based on proximity to where their technicians live. I asked for examples of the zip codes they deign to serve, and the zip codes they shared just happen to be the wealthier and predominantly white zip codes in Detroit.

Unbelievable. Typical cost to install a new outlet is $150. I've had this exact work done multiple times in the same home.

Hoover charges $60 to come to the home with the promise that that charge would go toward the work. They then gave an estimate of $650 for a 10' run of cable for a new outlet off an existing line! This is criminal. The racket here is partner with Home Depot, go on as many calls as possible and do as little actual work as possible. If the work is agreed upon it is a 4x markup of what it should be. I will be filing a complaint.

My hot water heater blew so I contacted Hoover and they came to my house to give me a quote for a new heater installation.   SERIOUSLY overpriced.  I got the job done through Lowes for a little more than 1/2 of what Hoover quoted me.

They charged me 60 bucks for the visit and quote but no matter, I still saved a bunch of cash by NOT having them do the job.

Agree with Ted S's review below.  Their pricing is totally non-transparent.  I asked for a breakdown of water heater cost vs labor which the technician was unable to provide.  Very happy with my decision to have my job done through Lowes instead.

Their prices are very high, found them through Home Depot.  They said they are high because they guarantee everything but don't most business do that?  Plus, they put in a hot water heater for us and put a huge company sticker on our furnace which we did not buy from or had serviced from them?????  I tried to peel it off and am still working on it.  They also put their sticker on the Hot Water Tank but that is understandable.  HWT is working fine, no complaints about actual service.

Seriously over priced. I called to get a ceiling fixture added to a room with no fixture. I realize that's a major job, but their estimate was twice what I  got from another company. And they charge for estimates. The technician was nice enough, but they're too rich for my blood.

There are scammers don't trust them they told me to change the water tank would cost me $4000 and I found somebody right away $650 including a new Rheem 40 gallon tank with 6 years warranty. They said just to fix my old tank pilot they said it will cost me $1300.. crazy they just there to take the fee that's it

Hoovers' service costs our outrageous.  They are deceptively hiding the start-up costs from customers.  You have to pay $89 before they will come to your house.  When they come to the house and give you a final cost to pay.  Your cost + $89.00.

They charged total $355.00 for a simple replacement of hardware in toilet tank.  Then they wanted to charge $3,000 for capping an outdoor spigget.  We decided not to use them for the latter as the cost was just obscenely high.

Unless you have a lot of money to burn, stay away from Hoover.

I just called to get someone to come out and look at my AC unit and was told to call back in the morning to schedule an appointment. My question is why have a call center if they don't have the power to schedule an appoint to have someone come out in the morning? Not good at all!!!!

Had them out on a few occasions for HVAC, etc. Techs always seem competent and professional. had my furnace inspected- 79 bucks.

Tech says all is good but need a new Pad (filter) for my whole house humidifier.  Quoted 502 dollars.  It's a 15 dollar filter at Lowe's! Ask how long it would take.. couple minutes.  Are you kidding me!! I was in such shock I just politely said no thanks I'll take care of it.

Had a similar outrageous quote on replacing my water heater last from them last year.

Michael M. came out this morning to repair a plugged kitchen drain. He ended cutting the pipe and rebuilding the clean out. He was friendly and professional and did a fantastic job. I'm giving this review 4-stars only because of price, which was a little more than I thought fair. The job took only about 30 minutes, and ran more than $250. But cost aside, the job was done well.

I would never use them....insanely overpriced. Charged us $850 to fix a bathtub drain and shower head. Finding out from other places it could have been done for $300-400!

They quoted out other jobs we didn't have them do that were also insanely overpriced.

I needed the pipe from my sump pump replaced.  Pretty straightforward job.  Maybe 1 to 2 hours of labor and approx. $20 to $30 in materials.I was happy with the professionalism of how they set up their appointments and notified me by text that Kevin the plumber was on his way.  He looked things over and diagnosed the problem very quickly.  He was very pleasant and courteous.  He told me that he would go out to his truck and formulate a quote for me.  I had a figure of about $400 in my head. Kevin came back with a quote for $600.
I was a a little taken aback by this quote, but decided that I wanted to get the repair over with, because I had sold the house and needed to get the repair done before closing. I told Kevin to go ahead with the work, and he told me that he would be back in two days to get it done.  This gave me time to think, and I decided that I was being ripped off.
I called another plumber.  He gave me the same diagnosis as Kevin, however his quote was $400 less than the quote from Kevin at Hoover.
Needless to say I cancelled my appointment with Hoover.
This is really unbelievable, because I am a returning customer.  I've worked with Hoover twice before.  Apparently Hoover doesn't understand the the cost of customer acquisition or the 80-20 rule that I teach in my marketing classes.  80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers, and those 20% are your returning customers.  Hoover just lost one member of their 20%.

Hoover fixed my plumbing problem. My complaint is with their business practices. I noticed an online offer for any drain cleared for $89. I called and was told the offer only applied to drains cleared on the main floor, not the basement. Their guy showed up and, sure enough, he snaked the drain from below my kitchen sink on the main floor. I mentioned the $89 offer and he said it only applies to clogs within 5 feet of the sink. In actuality, I believe the clog was within 5 feet of the sink, but how could I prove that? I'm guessing nobody has ever gotten to use that $89 offer. In the end, I paid $200 for a 15-minute job that I believe should have cost me $89. I won't get fooled again.

I wrote a bad review a few days ago regarding my overcharge quote for a Kohler kitchen faucet.  Well, today I received a call from the General Manager, Marcus, and what a very pleasant surprise. He read the review and checked into the price and agreed it was high. With further checking with the tech, he realized that he quoted us the wrong brand of faucet.  And for our trouble, he is refunding the monies we paid for the service call.  He explained the problem and apologized for the error.  This means a lot to me and has renewed my faith in Hoover Electric.  To take the trouble to make a phone call to me and then offer me a refund, shows they care about their customers and reputation. I thank them and will give them another chance.  Kathy Spanos

Extremely high, and non transparent pricing. Would not tell me how much was for parts and how much was labor. Would not give an hourly rate for labor, but I was billed $355.00 for three guys who could not figure out what was wrong, then lied about part availability. Wanted to charge me $2300 for a new breaker panel, I replaced a $125 breaker myself and fixed the problem.

The process was fine, and the electrician was very professional, however their prices are absolutely INSANE.  I kept careful track of how long the technician was at my house, and my bill came out to OVER $350 per hour.  Parts (which were minimal) were additional on top of that.  Pure service cost of over $350/hour!  There are too many decent electricians out there to ever have to use these guys again.

I contacted Hoover via chat on their website on a very hot summer Fri at about 5:30 -5:45 PM with A/C compressor not working. I explained I have asthma and needed service that night. If no one was available, I would understand and keep looking but I needed an answer. Gary assured me I could get service that night and asked for my contact info and address. Five (5) hours later I contacted the company via chat again asking why I hadn't been contacted yet and to confirm someone was still coming, I was informed they didn't have after hour service available. The woman was extremely apologetic for Gary's behavior but that was little help. If this Gary had just told me the truth, I would have continued to try to reach someone to repair my A/C. The company's website should also clearly state that they don't provide after-hours service. And Gary should be fired,

Grotesquely overpriced! I had them out to look at a hot water heater that was not working. I was given two options, 1. Fix it for $750, 1. Replace it for $1,950. Having been in the rental property business for some time, I knew that was a ridiculous price. I called someone else and had the water heater replaced for $850. I won't ever call Hoover again.

Very prompt, quick to schedule the quote and perform the work.   The technicians were friendly and considerate (always wore shoe covers when indoors and removed them as soon as the stepped outside).    Only complaint is that the work was a bit pricey.    Other than that, highly recommended.

Truly disgusted with the level of professionalism and service provided. We have been having issues with our AC unit and furnace and, unfortunately, discovered that our furnace needed to be replaced and couldn't be repaired. Since Hoover came out to look at the furnace to repair it, we decided to schedule a quote and new furnace install with them. They told us that they'd get back to us to get that all scheduled, but never reached out. When we reached out ourselves they scheduled us a week out of a quote and promised to put us on an urgency list (with hopeful next day installation, same week installation guaranteed) since we were living in a home with no AC in the height of summer. After that phone call, we were feeling hopeful. The next day, however, our hopes were completely tanked. We called to double check the quote window so one of us could be home and they told us they were still coming out for the quote, but couldn't do an install until a week later (we were told they scheduled us for the later date), but would try to get us higher up on the list. We called today to see if there was any movement and when to expect someone to come out for an install and they then informed us that we in fact WERE NOT scheduled for the day we thought we were scheduled for and were told we were scheduled for and that now they couldn't get someone out for an install for another 2 weeks. We have been in desperate need to get our furnace and AC fixed because the house has been measuring at 90 degrees indoors for 4 days straight and Hoover was made well aware of this. I understand that the season is busy, but when we are guaranteed same week installation, get pushed back with a guarantee of a different date only to find out they didn't actually put us on the schedule? I'm disgusted. DO NOT book anything with Hoover. They will just screw you over when you need it most. We are cancelling all future appointments with them and will NEVER be calling them again.

I waited 2 weeks for someone to come to my house, I explained I had a specific time frame that I needed my furnace replaced and central air installed as well as duct work fixed and they agreed to come out. I explained how difficult the work was going to be and they still agreed to come out. The appointment went well, the contractor told us he would be discussing the project with his boss and get us a quote in 3 business days. Well - three days came and went. I called the office because I have a specific timeframe to get work done. I was told someone would call me right back, I left my cell number since I was at work.  The sales person called my home phone and left a message and said they are too busy to take on this project at this time. Now why would they agree to come give us a quote if they were too busy? Waiting for this company has cost me 3 weeks of my timeline. I am sooooo disappointed.

We purchased two new 40 gallon water heaters through Home Depot for about $4,000. HD contracted with DRF who in turn contracted with Hoover.  Hoover was good on communication, calling and sending texts about the arrival of their technician.  They were professional, and cleaned up the area nicely. Unfortunately, the water heaters produced only tepid water in the first 24 hours. The technician returned, and changed the height of a dip tube. That produced hot water, but we had to run the kitchen sink for 4.5 minutes to get water at 110 degrees, despite its location about 30 linear feet from the tanks. On the third visit, a more experienced technician decided we needed significant changes to the way the water came in and out of the tanks, with five new valves and a cost to us of $835.  If this had been in the original quote, we might have seen it as reasonable.  Now, this project has caused us to be home four days in the last week, and it cost us more than other quotes we received.  We are very disappointed.

If I could give negative stars I would. I feel Hoover is a predatory company. I get that they are in business to make money, however these guys are a bunch of hustlers. We needed electrical work in our garage and some outlet work. We knew it would be pricey but figured around $1200. They quoted us at $2k. The electrician went downstairs and told my wife that we have a leak in our electrical box and it needs to be replaced. He said it was an emergency and it needed to be done quickly. The wife says okay. She signs up withers finance company greensky and they state the bill is now $5k for everything. My wife calls me at work letting me know what happened I immediately feel it's a scam. Everybody I talk stated I needed to get it done so we go ahead with the appointment. We figured the price was high but they had some decent reviews on Angie's list. They come and start doing the work. As the day goes on they call out DTE to fix wires on the outside. The technician wanted to know why they were putting in a 200 amp box. The electrician says it's the best and biggest there is. DTE guy thought it was overkill. They do some additional work on the outside. I ask will this change the price and electrician said oh no everything is the same. At the end of the day he shows me everything he did. Everything looks great and I would like to note has been running great. He then hands me a bill for $7800. I nearly crapped my pants. Our lawyer who is a family member contacted them and got the bill down to $5k, but what a fiasco. I would strongly recommend not working with these people unless you have money to throw away.
