I called Big Blue Plumbing to install a new water heater. They got some details over the phone about my current setup which saved the hassle and expense of someone coming out to take a look. The next day Randy came by with an assistant and they did a really excellent job taking just a few hours.

I really appreciated his attention to detail: he identified a major issue with the exhaust pipe and connected chimney, found a micro gas leak in some existing pipework at the end of the install which would usually have been missed, made sure to bleed the air from my oven before he left, used proper concrete to install the new exhaust and cleaned up perfectly after he left.

My experiences with Big Blue make it clear that they pay attention to hire excellent people and I've never had a bad experience with them.

Big Blue has been a constant rescuer to all the plumbing and heating issues we have had with an old construction house to a newer construction townhouse we are in now. We have used them exclusively since 2015. My children know every one (in the office and the team in the field) that's how many plumbing issues we've had. I'm happy to report that everything they've done has withstood years of use by adults and children. They have always been quick to respond. They found us a boiler fast in 0 degree weather, they've saved us from huge leaks from appliances and valves etc. Though they are popular they make time for their clients. Thank you Big Blue for all you do!

I cannot believe how irresponsible this company is!!  Absolutely wasted three weeks of my planning time in our need for a whole house HVAC system! When estimator finally showed up and told me within one minute of walking in that they are not big enough to do the job?! Why in the world did they waste three weeks of my time in planning and even taking the appointment if they could not provide products and services to meet our need?! Now my project is further delayed! Extraordinarily poor management and communication.  As a potential customer, I could not be more upset.

Two stars because the work itself was fine (edit: Downgraded to 1 star. They damaged the seal on our tub so the kitchen ceiling leaks when we shower... Yeah, not great.) Administration and payment were a nightmare!

My husband scheduled the initial consultation and appointment for replacing a leaking pipe. That itself was $195, and he was given a verbal ballpark of $1800 for two plumbers for 6-8 hours for the rest of the work. Okay, sounds good. He talked to Donna at Big Blue and was told that a formal quote would be emailed for our review. The quote was never sent (I didn't know this at the time... husband was arranging things up to this point)

I work from home so I can be there while they work. They're supposed to show up between 8am and 11am. One of the two plumbers finally shows up at 11:40am and the other one shows up at noon. Still, not a big deal, I'm home all day.

Around 4:10pm, they finish up and start talking payment. They want a check for $1800 on the spot. Now, this is a company that accepts credit cards, they advertise this on their site, we paid them by credit card for the initial consultation, and they spent way less time (9 plumber hours instead of 12-16) than we were originally told. So I have some concerns.

One of the plumbers calls up his boss says she's saying she doesn't want to pay, hands his phone to me, and now I'm talking to Kevin, the owner of the company. Kevin pressures me into paying the $1800 by check, then says he'll accept a credit card as well. I say well, you know, I'd like to see some paperwork, I was never sent a quote, we were told 6-8 hours with two plumbers... He says what, you're not going to pay? and My guys did the work and I just want to make sure my guys get paid! Basically accusing me of refusing to pay.

Now I'm standing out on my porch with this guy's phone, the plumbers are both staring at me by their truck with a combination of worry/anger, I'm sure they think I'm some deadbeat.

Then, to his credit, Kevin does say Okay, what do you think is fair to pay? The problem is, I have no clue. I don't know what they bill per hour, I've never seen a breakdown of services, I have absolutely nothing to go on here. So I just said I don't know what's fair which doesn't seem to be helping my I really DO want to pay you, but not $1800 on the spot without any sort of paper trail argument. Kevin's pressuring me into some lopsided on the spot negotiation so he can get my credit card info. It's REALLY uncomfortable.

Kevin says that he can't send me any sort of invoice because the office is closed. So the office is too closed to provide any records or quotes or information about the jobs, but not closed enough that you can't harass people on the phone for payment? Okay.

So I call on Monday asking for an invoice. They say they'll get me one later. I call on Tuesday asking for an invoice, they say they'll get me one on Thursday. On FRIDAY, they send me a paid in full invoice for the original $195 consultation. I call again asking for the invoice I actually care about.

The Friday call is a mess. Donna thinks that Kevin sent it, Kevin thinks that Donna sent it, the woman I originally reached can't access work records. Finally, I find out that the invoice is apparently around $1200 (not the $1800 Kevin tried to get me to pay) and the plumbers had inflated their hours from 9 to 10 hours. They're confused as to why I'm upset about this, and their lack of professionalism.

One of the women (I think her name was Jenn) actually said Listen, when I had some work done on my house, it was just a couple guys in a truck! I paid them and I didn't even get an invoice! Like, okay, thanks for telling me that story. Now can you send me the invoice I was told I was going to get yesterday?

Finally just got the invoice, for $1,194.66 (with a due date that says two days ago!?). I emailed them back asking how to pay by credit card (no links or payment info anywhere). I really don't want to speak to these people again. Hoping it can be handled online and we don't have to deal with them.

Edit: Apparently they don't check email. We were sleeping in on a Veteran's day holiday Monday and got a friendly reminder wake up call from Kevin this morning at 7:44am. (got invoice Friday afternoon, Kevin called Monday morning to check in). Paid the a******s. Good riddance.

Summary: Plumbers were late, original verbal ballpark was 3-7 hours over the time it actually took. Seal on tub drain was damaged, leak is worse than the one they fixed. Owner and the two plumbers at my house pressured me to pay $1800 on the spot by check, without any sort of paper trail or invoice, and accused me of not wanting to pay them. Had to call three times to get an invoice, which totaled just under $1200. Called us Monday at 7:44 am to harass us about an invoice they sent Friday afternoon. I've dealt with lots of contractors before, but this was an incredibly shady and mismanaged organization.

These guys are a bit expensive & I'm tempted to dock a star for that but I keep coming back because their service is over the top. Responsive, even after hours. Willingness to puzzle the plumbing problem over the phone (general questions) & affable, punctual plumbers. And the office staff are wonderful. Extra helpful & all well informed.

I appreciate that they picked up the phone and gave a quick follow up call.  Not impressed with the quote.

I knew what needed to be done and have the skills to do it but was looking to avoid the hassle.  Big Blue quoted $380 for the part number and 3 hours labor at $110/hr to install, plus apparently another 20% part mark-up for a total quote of $780.  It really was a 1 hour job for a pro and the part is widely available online for $200 flat.  They were polite but said sorry $380 is what our local supplier charges and who knows maybe we'll finish early.  I guess a fair $110/hr isn't enough.  Anyway, bought the part for $220 next day air delivery and did the job myself in 2 hours.

Conclusion:  I'm in the wrong line of work.

This is a delayed review from service I received in February of 2014 from Big Blue;  This was the really bad winter we all remember and my gas boiler went out on a Friday of one of the coldest days of the year.  I could not get anyone to come out to look at my boiler;  Big Blue did come out Saturday and replaced the igniter.   It was not a huge job but they get 5 stars for showing up when no one else would!!!

Follow Up:  I hired Big Blue to replace my furnace and water heater this summer and they did a fantastic job!!  They put in a great furnace and an indirect water heater and the price was reasonable based on numerous other quotes I received from other plumbers.  Now we have plenty of hot water and the heat seems to work much better, very quiet and even heat distribution.

I'm going to start with all of the positives, and there are many:

I first met with Kevin, who was extremely professional and courteous. I liked dealing with him, and he was pretty prompt with getting back to me. Communication is important and these guys know it! The guys he sent over, Josh and Bill, were also courteous and professional. Their task was to replace a cast iron drain and vent stack with new PVC, since the old drain was leaking. They had to disassemble a lazy Susan in my kitchen cabinet to access a particular pipe, but at the end of the job, it was fully reassembled like nobody had ever been in there. They kept wall cutting to a minimum and cleaned up after themselves, at least in my condo. So far so good.

Now for a couple of the downsides. Immediately below the joints of the new PVC piping, on the floor of my basement, is caked on pipe epoxy. It is unsightly and does not appear to be easily removable. Some are just blotches. Some are thin lines of it 8-10 inches long across the floor. This is apart from the water stains from the original pipe leak. I can take pictures as needed. It appears that Josh and Bill may have not used a drop cloth when they were working in the basement.

Also the $1895 estimate given to me at the start of the project was basically exactly what the final invoice was. This is a positive, but I expected a more detailed breakdown of the exact cost of what I paid for. There was only one line item on the invoice with a simple description of the job and the total cost. At minimum, I expect a labor breakdown, including an hourly rate, and a list of parts and their costs. I did some prep work on their behalf, which included carefully removing built-in shelves (for later reassembly) and cutting exploratory holes to precisely locate the questionable pipe and any adjacent electrical wiring, so that they could gain access to the necessary areas without the additional labor of doing that themselves. But that seemed to have no downward impact on the final invoice despite giving them at least an hour head start on the job.

Overall, I'm still pleased, and hope to give them another star in the near future if they can somehow address these issues. I still consider them my go-to plumbing service, but they need to take cleanup measures in all areas they work, not just livable spaces.

I appreciate their nice dispatcher. This is a reliable company that will send the right person on their team to the job. They try to keep it reasonable.  I suggest that you are present for the work, as I was recently when getting my oil to gas converted steam boiler tuned up.   There wasn't too much to it. He cleaned the glass tube, drained off water at the bottom (I had only been doing the upper spigot, and checked for water and gas leaks.  I learned about a new low water safety part that could use replacing to avoid my tip tapping with a hammer.  You learn a lot by asking questions!  Whomever comes has always been pleasant and informative.

I just had a great experience with the people at this company.  My Hot Water heater died on Sunday.  I don't have a regular plumber so I went online and searched for plumbers.  I sent Big Blue an email on Sunday night and they got in touch with me early Monday Morning!  How awesome is that!!?? To actually get a call back.  I was planning on spending the morning  trying to get an appointment with another company.  Donna was great with scheduling and working with me on my options.  The technician Tenzing  came out on time, wearing a mask and as polite as can be.   Turned out I needed a new water tank.  Tenzing went and picked one up and installed it on the same day!  He was very professional and knowledgeable.  I have to be honest, I have no idea what it costs to replace a water heater so I have no clue if I got a good deal or not. But for the service that I received from Big Blue, I am a very happy and satisfied customer!  I will call them for my plumbing and heating problems going forward.  Thanks Donna and Tenzing!

I have used Big Blue for a new gas furnace, new plumbing and occasional fixes and clean-outs.  They are totally honest - tell it like it is, give thoughtful explanations of whatever the problem is, and a fair  competitive price.  Occasionally they reward faithful clients ;o)

Best plumbing service I have found in the Boston area. Very transparent, down to suggesting that work is not required that i had asked about even if it would make them money. Also punctual and give realistic estimates.

Never had a bad experience in the 4-5 jobs i have had them do from servicing central air units, installing a gas dryer, replacing water heaters and fixing a broken faucet for my hot tub.

Could not recommend more highly...

I was pretty frustrated with Big Blue Plumbing & Heating. I had a leak in my basement, read all the great reviews on Yelp, and gave them a call.

Donna asked me to send in a picture of the leak (a hose had been duct taped to a pipe, and that was leaking). I did. She then told me that her guys said the picture was very helpful, and it would take them ~3-4 hours to fix at $95/hour, plus parts, which could cost around $200 or more.

I walked the picture of my problem over to my local hardware store, where the plumber sold me a roll of silicone rescue tape for $10. I fixed my own problem, cutting off the duct tape and re-sealing the attachment with the silicone rescue tape, in under 10 minutes.

I can't believe these guys would have charged me over $500 for this. Don't trust them.

**Update**
They're awful.  Turns out they fixed my toilet improperly.  Just had to call a different plumber out because (once again) my toilet would not stop running.  He opened the tank and said, well, here's your problem.  Did you have your toilet rebuilt recently?  I said, yes....about a year ago.  He said, whomever did this should have their plumbing license revoked!  They didn't trim the trap primer causing syphonage.  My toilet has been running BECAUSE of the shoddy work that Big Blue Plumbing did.

They did come out quickly and fixed my problem right away - in under 10 minutes, however I was charged a ridiculous amount to change out a flapper.  I was also charged an amount for testing - and let me be clear - the test referred to him flushing the toilet.  That's it.

When I called to dispute the amount on the bill - the woman was understanding and said I would only have to pay the hourly rate plus parts - however the new invoice reflected much more than what we agreed upon.  When I asked her about that, she didn't want to hear it and said basically that she was right and I was wrong.  Obviously we remember things differently.  All I know, is that a technician was at my house in and out under 10 minutes (including the time he took to use my bathroom for personal reasons) and I was charged almost $200.

They were fast and they fixed my problem, however I would not recommend.

I've contacted Big Blue twice now, and both times had great experiences. The first was in response to water pouring through my ceiling... something was leaking in our upstairs shower. I expected there'd be ceiling or wall demolition involved to fix it. However when the plumber investigated it with me, he was able to trace down the leak to a spot that could be accessed without damaging the walls, and fixed it quickly! Saved me a bunch of time and money over what I was preparing for.

Most recently, and what prompted me to write a review, is that I called them back to replace an aging gas furnace. Kevin gave me a quick estimate the day I emailed (replying to my email on labor day! I feel bad that I made him work!) and showed up to assess the situation a few days later. After looking over the whole air system he actually suggested some other tweaks that meant I might be able to remove the broken furnace entirely and not need a new one! That's thousands of bucks I might be able to save thanks to their expertise and suggestions, even though they're the ones I'd be paying. :)  That warrants a 5 star yelp review in my book, and I'll definitely call them back for future work.

Friendly, professional, experienced, on time and excellently priced -- what more can you honestly ask for in a plumber?

We called Big Blue solely based on their good Yelp reviews when our hot water heater blew on a Saturday night, just a couple months after we'd moved into our first house. We knew the thing was on its last legs, but we still had never needed a home repair before, and thus had no idea who to call in a pinch. Upon the advice of Yelpers, we left a message for Big Blue and crossed our fingers.

Not only did Donna call back right at 9 a.m. Monday morning, she quoted us a better price than what friends had told us to expect from their plumbers, and assured us they would have someone out to us (we're in the West End of Malden now, about 10 minutes from Somerville) the same day.

It took until 6 p.m., but they still fit us in and had our hot water up and running again by 8 p.m. They even helped us troubleshoot ANOTHER plumbing problem in our basement at no extra cost, and spared us the expense of hiring another plumber to look at what ended up being a DIY fix. Not everyone will be that honest! Also, because the call finished up so late, the repairman refused to take our payment that evening since he wasn't going back to the office and he didn't want to risk losing our sensitive information. So they allowed us to call it in the next morning on a credit card, and mailed us a receipt promptly. I was impressed that they took that much care with our financial information.

We were overall very impressed and would readily use them again the next time we need a plumber. Highly recommended.

I'm writing to express my gratitude and extreme satisfaction with the emergency late night service that Big Blue provided on the night of January 2nd.  Around 9:30pm, I found water streaming thru my mud room from a burst baseboard pipe in one of my second floor guest bedroom.  We had been using an electric space heater upstairs in our main bedroom in an attempt to save some heating cost.  Once I found the source of the leak, I called the emergency line and got a call back from Kumar about 20mins later.  He said he would try to get to my place in 20 mins.  He arrived right around twenty minutes.

I could tell he was tired from working all day and all night but he was nonetheless, friendly, courteous, and professional.  He checked out the boiler in the basement, shut off the water to upstairs, cut out and replaced the burst pipe and cleaned up.  And there was no attitude, rudeness, or sarcasm the entire repair.  Given the bad situation, he was a pleasure to deal with.

Kumar from Big Blue was extremely professional and we were happy to have him help solve our terrible situation.

Thanks Big Blue!!!!

This is a Yelp success story:  I contacted Big Blue for a pair of repair jobs in my three-family after reading their reviews and being very excited to support a local business that seemed to be pleasing its customers.

I have to say, this was not only by far my best experience with a plumber, but, perhaps my best experience with any business I've ever had to contact in eight and change years of being a homeowner.

Kevin and his staff were incredibly helpful, responding to my calls immediately, having someone visit the same day in exactly the narrow time window I was told, spending time diagnosing the problems, educating me as to what the situations were, how things should be set up if they were built from scratch, what my options were for repairs, and so on and so forth, so that I would be making the most informed decisions possible.

Rather than up-sell me the most elaborate fix, they asked me what my plans were, discussed the utilities costs associated with calculating a pay-back time for a more elaborate or efficient piece of equipment, emailed me literature and technical specs for different alternatives for heating, hot water, and heat integration, and just in general demonstrated as much care for my investment as they would for their own homes.

Big Blue is, quite simply, a model for how you run a business.  Any business.  I would recommend them to anyone who needs plumbing and heating help, and I would recommend them to any fledgling business owner as a model of how you secure loyal repeat customers.

My Big Blue magnet is on the fridge and the number is in my Contacts list and I won't have to sweat another plumbing problem for as long as I shall live in Somerville.

Initially terrible but problem somewhat resolved.....

I had a sump pump issue and explained carefully over the phone where the problem is. I was told it would take 3-5 hours for them to repair.  The guy shows up and refuses the work and says it's for a landscaping company.  Even though I had carefully explained over the phone what the situation was, he was disrespectful and kept muttering about work order.  I should have given up right then but decided to have him look at a leak in the shower.  His response is that it appeared someone had worked on it already and so he could no longer do so.   At this point, we had to give up and ask him to leave and he starts demanding money for having done nothing or even trying.

Afterwards, the owner realized that he has a terrible employee and sent a written apology with a gift card.  This was very nice and professional at the other end of the spectrum.  The owner clearly cares that things are fair and done well.  Unfortunately, there are sometimes problematic employees and I assume this is why the Yelp ratings are either 1 star or 5 stars.  To be fair, I'll take the average given that the owner owned up to the problem.

I can't speak more highly towards Kevin at Big Blue Plumbing and Heating. I should mention up front that I haven't had any actual work performed by this company, so I can't speak to the cost, timeliness or reliability of the workmanship, but if Kevin is any indication, I would expect great things.

I had a drafting issue with the flue exhaust system at my house. I emailed my problem to Big Blue and received a prompt response from Kevin who asked for more information. After a few back and forth emails, he gave me a call and we discussed the problem for a good 20 minutes over the phone. I then emailed him some dimensions of the runs, diameters,  etc and he took his own free time to do some calculations to assess the work and then spent another 20 minutes on the phone discussing it with me. He even offered to come by and take a look at the situation if his suggestions didn't improve things.

Amazing level of professionalism and willingness to help. Highly recommended.

This is an odd sort of review, in that I didn't actually have them do any work for me... but I was so impressed by my phone conversation that I felt I needed to give kudos.

I just bought a condo and I'm looking for a contractor to do some HVAC work before I move in. Based on the positive reviews here I called Big Blue. I have a very tight timeline in which I need the work done, and Kevin was very upfront about the fact that he was too booked to work within my timeline, but that he'd like to help me. He proceeded to talk with me for 25 minutes (!!) about my options, his opinions and recommendations, and then he recommended another company that he trusts. What a remarkable experience - so interested in good customer service and honesty that he gave his business to someone else. While I can't have him do this particular job, I ABSOLUTELY will be calling him for any further plumbing or heating needs that might come up.

Really great experience from start to finish. I had an emergency hot water tank replacement that was needed after my tank started to leak. Donna answered my call promptly at 8AM after I had called a few other businesses without any success. She was very attentive and polite, and offered to send someone over within the next hour. Kumar came to help, and did a really great job, fixing some of the old shoddy plumbing that the last person had done. He explained a few other issues that would need to be fixed in the future and explained how the heater works. He also came up to my unit to help flush out all of the faucets and dishwasher / washing machine. Kumar is a great guy, and I plan to call him for future work. Very happy with my experience and look forward to future business with Big Blue.

Kevin was great to work with. My bathroom sink was clogged. I tried everything (even tried snaking it myself). Then I called the professionls. They came, and in a short period of time found the culprit - a peice of rag stuck in the pipes.

Job well done. Will definitely use them again (hope I don't need to though). It took a while for the invoice to get to me. Almost forgot I used them.

I just had a really wonderful experience with Kevin and Mark of Big Blue Plumbing...well, as wonderful as an experience can be when your toilet is broken and you discover that there are pretty major problems with the drain system in your building!

I found Big Blue on servicemagic.com and Kevin had great reviews on that site as well. I emailed him with my problem and almost immediately got a call back and my appointment was scheduled for two days later. Kevin and Mark arrived right at the beginning of the two hour window they gave me.

Right from the beginning they were very friendly and professional. We talked through the problem for awhile and Kevin discussed his ideas about what might be causing them and some ideas for solutions. Throughout the visit I was extremely impressed with how much time he spent explaining things to me...it was like a mini plumbing lesson! My husband and I are fairly new home owners and I have zero knowledge of any sort of home repair, so I was a bit nervous to have our first service professional to come over on my watch. I was relieved when I found that I really felt that I could trust Kevin and rely on the information he was giving me. While checking out our bathroom and basement he even found problems I wasn't aware of, and a bit of internet research informed me that it's probably a very good thing that he caught them!

In the end, Kevin and Mark spent almost 4 hours in my home. The total cost for rebuilding my expensive toilet (new water valve, all new stuff in the tank, new phalange, new bolts, new wax ring) was $310 and the toilet is no longer leaking and is flushing 100x better than it has since we moved in. He plugged a hole in our chimney and fixed a few other leaks in the basement for $150.

We also have some outstanding issues that will involve the rest of the owners in our condo building. Kevin offered to come to a condo meeting and speak with the rest of the association about the problems...for free! Thank goodness he offered that, because I would never be able to explain what's going on to my neighbors!

I don't have anything to compare their prices to, but the service I received from Big Blue Plumbing has made me a loyal customer.

We had a great experience with Kevin and Big Blue when they installed our new boiler. They were informative, polite, thoughtful and conscientious. They worked with us to help us pick the right system and went above and beyond in their service when it came to the install. We would definitely recommend these plumbers for any boiler/heating work.

Donna on the phone was excellent. Polite and friendly, and always returned my calls in a timely manner addressing all my concerns and answering all my questions.

Not only was Donna great, but the plumber ACTUALLY SHOWED UP and he even SHOWED UP AT THE TIME FRAME THEY TOLD ME! Imagine that!
He was courteous and efficient. The clog was removed.

The only thing was that it was a little expensive. But that may just be the price of hiring a plumber who actually comes at the promised time and is courteous and fast.

I'd rather pay a little extra for reliable service than cheap out on someone who is rude, inconsiderate, and doesn't show after I took the day off work to wait for them. (ok, I'm a little bitter from previous plumbing companies)

No one likes to call a plumber.  No one wants to call a plumber on a weekend with a clog so bad 3 other people couldn't snake it clear.

Somehow I stumbled across Big Blue on the interweb and wow, was I impressed.  Kevin the Plumber called me back promptly after I left a message with his service and had one of his guys at my house at exactly the promised time Monday morning (OK so the clog wasn't THAT bad that I needed him on Sunday evening).  My clog was a mystery.  Well, really, my *pipes* were a mystery and it took a *long* time and 5 of his guys to sort out the problem.  The point is, they kept trying to figure it out, and repeatedly said We'll try this before that so we can save you some cash.  The entire time, all the plumbers who trundled through my house and up and down 4 flights of stairs and up a ladder on to the roof, were completely polite and tidy with their work.

The clog mystery was eventually solved and the price tag was less than I was imagining, AND I got a thank you card in the mail about a week after I paid my bill.  I highly recommend Kevin the Plumber and his team!

My furnace broke down on one of the coldest days this winter. I found Big Blue through Yelp and decided to contact them based on their reviews. I was a little impatient waiting to hear back because I needed the furnace fixed that day and if they didn't have an opening, I was going to have to look elsewhere. So while they got back to me within 3 hours of me leaving a message on their phone and through their website, I do wish I could've heard back sooner - but again, that was me worrying about whether or not a company I'd never worked with was going to return my call.

No need to worry however because Josh called me back about mid-morning and was able to fit me in in the early afternoon. They were very knowledgeable and we lucked out - they had the part I needed in their truck. They were relatively quick and pleasant people to work with. Very friendly. I'd most definitely use them again.

Used them for s clogged sink. First, they tried to used a forced air machine but it was no good. They then subcontracted out to another local vendor and snaked it. The subcontractor was annoyed, kinda unpleasant and complained how my plumbing system is not adequate like I could have something about the structural issue. He seemed to hate life and said any inadequacy was because my plumbing system sucks and then 15 minutes he finally snaked it. Didn't tip him because he had a piss poor attitude.  Cost me $300. Would I use them again??? I don't know, he did fix it, and the charge was the higher end of the scale...but he fixed it.

I spoke to Josh at Big Blue about installing bathroom safety rails in my shower.  I explained that  I was having surgery in 4 weeks and wanted to have the safety rails installed prior to my surgery date.  Josh was very nice - reassured me that he would  get it done for me- he assured me that he'd  call me within a week to schedule a date for the work.  GREAT!!      Welll........THREE weeks and no phone call so I called him.   If he had been honest and told me he forgot - fine.  But instead he gives me this song and dance about the plumbing supply store being out of stock on safety rails.      Can you say BULLSHIT, Josh???  I called another plumber who was at my house the very  next day - completed the job in less than an hour.

Note to Josh - if you don't want or have the time to do the work - BE HONEST about it.  There are plenty of other plumbers out there who could use the work, no matter how small the job.

Had a small gas leak, so called Big Blue.  They were able to fit me in before the weekend.  The plumber came out on a Friday afternoon, cut out the leaky pipe, and replaced it.  Feeling good so far...

Inspector came out on Monday, but the pipe was still leaking, which require several plumbers and a manager to fix.  In total, I got billed for 4 leak fixes, 3 of which were caused by the initial fix of the one leak.  Will try every other plumber in the area before calling Big Blue again after feeling quite ripped off.

Absolutely terrible experience.  Quoted me an hourly rate for work done and was highly reviewed on yelp - so I ended up going with them to replace a water heater under warranty.

They arrived - were nice enough - handled all the warranty replacement stuff and came back the next day with a replacement header..  With the wrong heater.  They claimed it was the only one the warranty would cover - was a lower power (and cheaper) model than the one I had originally.  Guy who did the install was a jerk, scratched my floor with the replacement and treated his apprentice like crap (Literally laughed when he burned his hand several times..)

I complained a couple more times and then called the manufacturer who told me that they should have replaced it with the same model.  Finally got them to recognize their error and Josh came over and was nice enough about it - Kevin also came over at a later date.

Around this time their first bill came in.  $1000 to replace my water heater under warranty - and the guy was nice enough to not charge for any piping.  They were there for  under 2 hours and the hourly rate they quoted as $125.  Every other quote I had for replacement was under half that total.

About 2 weeks, 5 visits and 20 phone calls later they replaced the water heater with the correct one and I paid $800 to replace an under warranty water heater.

Nothing about this experience was inline with other yelpers experiences.

BB came in to install a new water heater and we found a problem with the floor once the old one was out. I was SURE I was going to spend the weekend without hot water and need to call a carpenter. BB sent a second plumber to help, got the OK from their office and fixed the problem themselves! They let me know what was going on the whole time, let me chose what happened and then hustled to get it done in an afternoon. It turned out slightly more expensive than the quote, but they dealt with several unexpected issues and put in extra time and effort to get everything done in one day. I was happy to pay a little bit more and have the whole thing taken care of. Hard to ask for more and the install turned out great!

I have used Big Blue Plumbing twice now.  I have been completely satisfied with everything about the company.  It's easy to schedule appointments online.  The times I chose online weren't available and the office called me right away to schedule another time.  The two plumbers who have fixed my plumbing were both great. Today Kumar was on time, polite, knowledgable - I couldn't ask for more.

I recommend Big Blue wholeheartedly!

Had a great experience with Big Blue Plumbing. As with most plumbing issues, it was a last minute appointment and urgent. My experience sucked.   Had a plumbing problem with the shower, they rescheduled twice before showing up.  My shower was functional (just low pressure). Gave a quote of $400 upfront before they came and they BROKE it!!!  Instead of repairing the low pressure problem, they got the valves stuck so that we couldn't get any hot water any more, and then said it would cost $900-$1200 to repair and, um, forgot to mention that would require shutting of water to the entire building! (I live in a condo).  I got much more reasonable quotes ($650) from two other plumbers for the same job.  And, by the way ... no apologies either.

Avoid this company!!

I found Big Blue through Yelp, and as a new home owner I was nervous about plumbing & gas hook ups in General. Kumar from Big Blue came to give us a quote on work to set up a new gas stove line and to do some sink repairs. He was very knowledgeable and gave us a fair quote. We just completed all the work and everything is set up perfectly. He took time to do things right, and explained what he was doing as he went. I'd highly recommend Big Blue.

My landlady hired them to fix our toilet. They earn some stars for showing up and giving a good recommendation (replace, don't repair) which my landlady ignored.

There were some problems with communication; they showed up too early one morning without calling (even though they had been asked to) and my landlady had to send them away to come back later.

They fixed the toilet so that it doesn't leak into the basement (though it does leak internally a bit, activating the refill even when we haven't flushed - but that may be due to the toilet's age). The plumber did make an effort to prevent the bathmat from getting dirty and cleaned up after himself somewhat. But after he was gone, I noticed there were pieces of broken tile, toilet ring wax, and a dark substance which was either pipe parts or dried sewage (yuck!) all over the bathroom.  I had to immediately clean the whole room before it was no longer too gross to use. While I was doing that, I noticed that one of the floor tiles had been cracked, presumably when the toilet was removed and put down too quickly. That made me quite unhappy, as I myself had tiled that floor only a few months ago, at great inconvenience.

I was just looking for a company to do chimney repair on a different property, but after that traumatic experience, I've decided never to hire Big Blue (sorry).

Best Experience!  Go with Kumar to replace your water heater!

Big Blue Plumbing replaced my water heater.  Very efficient service and great quality work.  I initially emailed to get a quote.  When I saw that it was reasonable, I emailed BBP and got in touch with Donna who was very fast at getting a viewing appointment scheduled.  Kevin (owner) personally came out to make sure that the work was doable.  After scheduling the installation (and water heater removal) appointment, Kumar came out and did some great work.  He pointed out what past plumbers should have done and never complained about the close working conditions.  Would highly recommend Kumar and his work as he is an expert at this water heater business.  I was charged exactly what was quoted and had a great experience with Big Blue.

These guys are the best! They are always very responsive when I call and can typically schedule me for the following day (turnaround time has even been faster in an emergency!). The service of the plumber they send has always been excellent (Kumar has always been the one handling my jobs). The only complaint I have, if you can even call it that, is that they are sometimes TOO prompt! I realize that sounds funny, but today I had a window of 12-2 and I got a call a little before 11 that Kumar was already at my house. Fortunately I work near my house so I was able to get home quickly but it might not be so easy for some people. Kumar did offer to come back during my scheduled window if I needed him to, but seems like there may be an opportunity for Big Blue to optimize their scheduling.

My husband and I recently moved to a new home, and the previous occupant left behind the unsightly remains of an old bidet (exposed pipes etc.). My neighbor had worked with Big Blue not too long ago, so I called them to come in and give us an estimate. To my pleasant surprise, they do not charge to give estimates, unlike some other high maintenance plumbers that I've worked with. Kevin was prompt and courteous, and lo and behold when we went down to our basement to check on something else, found a pool of water by our hot water heater. For realz! With a new baby, we didn't need this additional 'surprise.'

Thankfully, the heater was under warranty, and so that saved us money, despite the big huge expense of replacing a hot water heater. Hope that never happens to you, readers. Big Blue called the company and took care of everything. They sent in Kumar and Mike to replace the heater the very next day. Kumar was polite, kind, and worked extremely hard. He was careful not to wake the baby (by being quiet), and took his shoes off when he came into our home (per my request). Mike accidentally hurt his finger, but did not fuss, and continued to get the job done (with a small stop at the hospital). It was one of those freak 90 degree days in June, and both guys provided outstanding service. They even refused a tip! Seriously, who does that in this day and age, saying that their boss is a great guy who takes very good care of them. Happy employees make for a happy company. Thanks Kumar and Mike.

Special shout out to Donna as well, who was super sweet and helpful while scheduling and took care of everything.

My only slight disappointment was that I wanted the bidet pipes to be shorter, and they still stick out of the floor. I'm not sure if there was anything more the guys could have done on this, but it did set me back $125.

I would recommend BIg Blue without hesitation. My husband who is a Marine and has very high standards, approved as well. Give them your business. Go now, do it!

Kumar from Big Blue Plumbing did an amazing job disconnecting and reconnecting our kitchen plumbing after a kitchen renovation! He's very thorough, helpful, and pleasant to work with. What a refreshing change from the granite installers and other people who worked on our kitchen. And now we have a go-to plumber, which is a relief. Donna back in the office was also very helpful and pleasant in scheduling as well--they took the stress out of the renovation process for us!

Big Blue is the best!
One morning, shortly before I had to go out of town, I awoke to our hot water heater spewing water all over the floor. Kumar from Big Blue was able to come the same day to stop the water and replace our heater. Donna, who answered the phone, helped me find the serial numbers so she could make sure they had the same heater in stock. Kumar and his colleague showed up and fixed things expertly.
After they fixed it, they tested our faucets to let the air out and refill the hot water. The shower faucet wasn't getting good water pressure, so Kumar came back another day with a new part for the valve. As he worked, he explained what caused the problem and how he was fixing it. Donna was able to bill my credit card over the phone so I didn't have to worry about writing a check.
I strongly recommend Big Blue.

I've only used these guys once. Hot water heater gas light kept going out. These guys had to order a special part. Sounded like they went out of their way to find the needed part. They were very sympathetic knowing it was a tenant's unit. They kept in touch and each time the service man came out he explained in DETAIL what the problem was. Even better.. The bill was very reasonable considering all the visits. I would recommend them and I'll be using them again.

if i could write 10 reviews for these guys i totally would.  we have been dealing with a drain fly issue for a few weeks and had gotten to the point of wringing our hands in despair.  we had gotten a quote from a different plumbing company which shall not be named here but basically, they tried to completely screw us - maybe not on purpose, but we could have been out thousands of dollars perhaps because they didn't know what they were doing.

based on yelp reviews, we called big blue and kevin came out right away.  they suggested an alternative route because it might save us money.  he said he believed in starting with the inexpensive solutions and if those failed to work, moving on to more drastic measures.  he listened to the whole story and got a lot of information before making a move.

bottom line, he quickly found the root of the problem without having to resort to excavation or anything crazy.  in fact, the other company was so far off the mark it was laughable. they also had done a crappy job snaking and using a camera to inspect the sewer line, yet big blue managed to work with the joke of a VHS copy we got from that other company (who has working VCRs anymore?? so grateful for that because that dumb tape cost a lot of money). kevin and his crew came back out to the house to fix the sewer issue the very next day (a saturday no less) and spent a the entire day working diligently on the issue at a fraction of the cost of the other quote.

we're now in a holding pattern to make sure that was the absolute only source of the drain flies, but if for whatever reason, that's not the end of it, i am completely confident that it will be resolved in the most honest, intelligent, and reliable manner possible.

do not hesitate to call these guys if you need plumbing done.

***update - we had our exterminators come back out and spray for existing bugs and the problem seems to be going away - we only have a few bugs here and there now.  we are 99% sure that the issue that big blue worked on was the only source of the flies.

These guys were great!

Our ancient water heater broke--complete with leaking all over our basement floor. First, we tried to go with the installers from one of the giant national hardware stores. Their installers estimated that to put in the nice, energy efficient water heater we wanted would be a price much higher than what it would cost to just buy it off the shelf. We decided that we would purchase the water heater ourselves and haul it home in our truck to save a little bit of cash. The hardware store installer guy then hemmed and hawed about how much it would cost just to install the water heater--giving no clear answers and also no clear time about when he would be able to come back and do the actual work. Additionally, he kept on pressuring us to buy his product it's right in my truck, why would you want to go buy your own??

This is when we started shopping around and found Big Blue. They came out the same day we called them, tried to install the water heater that we had bought-which was actually the wrong size (there's a difference between a 40 gallon tall and a 40 gallon short).  When they determined that they couldn't install it safely, or without a lot of extra work to make it safe, they gave us the choice to go and return the first water heater. We did, and they came back the next day and installed it quickly and efficiently, charging us only $300! They didn't even charge us for the first fruitless trip out. Before leaving, they made sure that we knew how to use all of the functions of the water heater (pilot light, etc) and answered all of our questions about the water heater function itself.

Great service, very affordable, and we'll use them again in a minute for any further plumbing needs

I usually use Yelp to complain about bad service (see my review for The Wine Cellar off Newbury), but this time I had to write to give big props.  I've been battling my condo heater (located in my attic) for 6 years or so, and when it stopped working again during a recent snowstorm, I was ready to move.

I had had 2 past experiences with 2 different heating experts, with very mixed results (unecessary parts, quick fix solutions, some damage to the apartment).  Luckily, when I googled local heating experts, I found Big Blue and the 5 or 6 independently positive reviews.  I called in the AM, and Kevin gave me some possible do-it-yourself solutions.  When that didn't work, he and his partner Mark dropped in here like a couple of paratroopers, banged the short term solution out in no time, AND thought of a cost effective long term solution (our appointment is in 2 weeks).
Excellent!

I'm in love. Truly. I lived without a dishwasher for long enough and now that I have one, I'm madly, deeply in love. I have Big Blue to thank for it. Josh came to our house to provide an estimate and was so friendly. He asked questions our other two plumbers never asked and on his way out he installed a shower head we had been having troubles with-I never even saw a bill for that.

Big blue is a rare find! I had an air conditioner unit that did not work (not installed by Big Blue). Big Blue went out of their way and invested an incredible amount of time and effort to fix the problem. It took them a while because the problem was complicated and while 99% of contractors would have walked away 1/3 into the process, Kevin and his incredible team including Dave and Donna stuck with me. Kevin is not what you would expect from a traditional contractor -- he is professional, able to explain complicated technical facts to a lay person and will do everything to make things right for you as a customer. Dave is an accomplished technician who never gives up until he finds the source of the problem. Donna who will take your calls and schedules the appointments is reassuring and a wonderful communicator.  You will not find another company like Big Blue that not only delivers on their promises but goes above and beyond.

Big Blue replaced our furnace and basement ductwork about a year ago and did a great job.  I meant to review them then, but never got around to it - i'm doing it now because Kevin came by this morning to show me how to balance the system myself so i can refine which rooms get how hot - he spent an hour with me, free of charge.  This seems to be typical of their high level of service, in my experience.

The furnace installation itself was a great experience.  We got a bunch of bids, and Big Blue was moderate within the range we saw - we chose them because Kevin was so clear, helpful and open about the system design and specs, and provided a bid that made really clear what the costs/savings would be from a range of options (add AC coil, do super-high efficiency, cost per zone, etc.).  We didn't feel pushed into any particular decision, but we did feel well informed.

The install was nice and quick, they cleaned up after themselves, the install was solid, and in the end we got what we needed.

I would strongly recommend these guys - especially Kevin.

Their number now has a permanent place on our fridge.

Our week began with a water drip from our light fixture, which turned out to be coming from our shower upstairs. They quickly found the problem and started with the easiest lowest cost solution for the problem.  Kevin was amazingly attentive, was quick to respond when the initial fix didn't resolve the issue, and the free quote was really free.

They're honest, responsive, and handle problems in an intelligent way that respects you as a person and your home as well. Can not recommend highly enough. Such a wonderful response to such a horrible problem.

I contacted Big Blue for a simple job of cleaning out/tweaking my gas boiler to get it burning below 100PPM carbon. I needed this so that I can get insulation and other jobs done by MassSave at my house, and the carbon measurement is a pre-requirement. MassSave will pay for up to $350 of the price for this boiler work, so of course I wanted to get it done. The only requirement is to have the contractor fill out a form saying they are licensed and did the measurements of the carbon and what they were and send that in along with the invoice so I can get reimbursed.

Called Big Blue, explained them the job, and they set a time to come out. They said they would arrive between 9am and 11am and arrived at around 10:58am. They did not call to remind me or anything so I almost thought they weren't coming but they did show up just barely in time.

I was under the impression that they understood what the work was going to be and were going to complete it on that day. Turns out that appointment was just to give me an estimate. $250 - ok, great I said - that will be paid by MassSave, all you have to do is say that you can fill out this MassSave form for me (as required) and we'll be good to go. Of course we can fill it out. OK, great.  Made another appointment about a month out.

The morning the appointment was supposed to happen I get a call from Big Blue and they say they need to reschedule - their equipment is broken - they need to get new equipment. Would have been nice to get some notice, but ok... I reschedule.

We are now over 1 month out from my original MassSave appointment. Big Blue comes, actually does the work, everything seems great. I ask them if they can fill out the form, the guy says he doesnt have all the needed info but he will bring it back and drop it in my mail-slot the next day. Needless to say that did not happen.

Over the last weeks I have called Big Blue multiple times. I have left them a message (which they never once returned) three times. I have got them on the line by calling back later twice, both times they expressed concern and said they would send the form ASAP. Still... I don't have it. Let it be known I also have not received my bill.

At this point, I'm not going to be able to get the rebate from MassSave unless they can grant me an extension... which I shouldn't even in my mind be required to have to deal with and ask for because I went through all the steps to make Big Blue aware of my situation. If Big Blue never sends me a bill... well , okay ... but what happens when they do send me a bill ? Do I pay it ? Does MassSave reimburse me?

This is not the professionalism I expect from a company. They did good work, and I'm sure they do good work. They talk friendly on the phone and everything, and they seem like nice people, but it just seems like they really don't have it together at all when it comes to timing or anything that has a schedule.

1) They showed up right at the edge of their window, without even calling the day before to remind me. [Could let this slide, if not for everything else]
2) They canceled my 2nd appointment on the day of due to equipment failure which they should have known about in advance, since this is a common type of job.
3) They do not deliver paperwork on schedules needed, despite multiple polite requests, and one angry request. (Thought maybe getting mad would help, it didn't really make a difference)
4) They do not send the bill in a timely manner, which requires more intensive balancing of my finances to ensure that I can pay the bill when it arrives. (Fine, its $250... not that much for some people or even me... but imagine it was more ?? would they still do this?? I would not want a bill of any substantial amount of money hanging over my head in some limbo... not cool. I would have preferred the bill at time of service and paid in full !

All in all , I can't feel comfortable recommending them, unless you are very very patient and don't need your bills or anything in a timely manner.

I used Big Blue a few times. They were prompt and courteous. There was a small drip in my heating system. The drip was from a pipe off of a fan. The patch job was professional, but when the repairman showed me his work, we both noticed that the fan was making a weird whistling noise. It was still functioning so he closed it up and left. Exactly one week later during a cold snap, the system shutdown because that fan broke. I called Big Blue. They were backed up due to a lot of frozen pipes that day. They said they could fix it the same day, but then they couldn't find the part. So they said they'd bring over some space heaters and fix it the next day. I think they forgot about the heaters because I had to call them later that night to remind them to bring them over. They did end up getting the part at the end of the next day (2 days without heat), and everything was resolved (though pricier than I would've thought). Maybe the fan was on its way out, but I think all the tugging on the pipes during the patch led it to fail a week later. All my contractor friends tell me the same thing: you pull on one thing in an HVAC system and the thing next to it breaks. That's fine, I understand that. What I would've appreciated is a little more hustle when we were then without heat for 2 days.

We just had a great experience with Big Blue!  We had a very complicated gas oven and range installation.  Our piping would not go into the unit and we could not tell where the piping ended without ripping up our floor.  The team came up with a great, affordable solution.  They were so patient and helpful and explained everything to us across the way.  Would absolutely recommend their work.  We are loyal customers for all plumbing needs moving forward!

I hired Big Blue recently to fix a leaky faucet and leaky toilet.  The plumber they sent, Kumar, was great.  He was prompt, friendly and professional.  My only complaint is that instead of using new toilet stopper I bought, he recommended that I use one he provided which was more simple (and therefore less could go wrong later on).  So that was fine, but he didn't know how much it was and the company later charged me $25 for it, which is excessive.  I would consider using Big Blue again, but only if the job did not involve new parts.

We did not actually use their service, but I called on a winter morning to see if they could fix my heat the same day.  They were completely booked, but said if they had a free moment they would come over.  I ended up calling another company that had a definite opening, but this company (Donna) called me two times that day making sure I was ok and that my problem was fixed.  Very responsive!

Had a very serious situation in my basement and Kevin and his team could not have been more helpful - friendly, responsive and went above/beyond to make sure that the issue was finally resolved - even referring me to other specialists who helped out. Cannot say enough positive things about the overall experience - scheduling (Donna) included. Would use them again for anything

Big Blue is great!   They show up on time, do a great job and clean up when they're done!  They have also taken care of jobs for us that other plumbers have turned down because of the high level of difficulty.   I will never use another plumber.

We had a leaking water heater which needed replacing. Donna promptly scheduled an inspection (no charge), Kevin came when he said he would, and two days later Kumar and Mike came by, figured out how to drain the old heater (complicated because we have no bulkhead), installed a new one, and explained how everything worked. On the way out, after we had paid them, they noticed that our furnace pipes were missing filters/meshes to keep critters out. They then got hold of a ladder, found extra filters and mesh in their truck, installed these, and only then left. They were also really nice guys. Excellent service, no complaints at all. I'd recommend them highly.

Big Blue Plumbing came by on a Saturday to replace my garbage disposal and potentially clear up a clogged kitchen sink.  From the initial phone conversation until the very end of the service the company was incredibly professional and courteous.  They came to my apartment and were in and out in less than an hour.  The last plumber (different company) who worked in my kitchen left it a complete mess, but Big Blue did a great job keeping everything in order and clean - they even soaped my sink (which let's just say was not in the best of conditions).  All in all, I had a great experience with this company and would definitely recommend it to anyone in need of a plumbing company.  I've been on Yelp for years now, and this is my first review (yes, they were that great)!

After being without reliable hot water for  weeks I gave up on my (now former) plumber and called Big Blue due to the high yelp ratings. He came when he said he would, charged a reasonable amount, apologized profusely for a part needing to be ordered, communicated well, and cleaned up after the job was done.

Terrific service. You call them. They pick up. You have a conversation with them telling them what your problem is and they say, No problem, we'll fix it and they're  there when they say they'll be. We had a gas washer/dryer delivered (which was delivered 4 days late without warning) and needed a plumber to install. Big Blue was there the same morning and we were able to do laundry that night. Absolutely, terrific.

They were able to come the same day and even worked around a meeting I didn't realize I had when I called for my initial appointment.  The job itself was just fixing a bit of pipe that I had cut when taking out a sink so it is hard to extrapolate to what a bigger job would be.  The plumber didn't have an extra compression valve on hand which is why I can't give five stars (why not carry around like 8 of these since they are so small and must be somewhat commonly needed)?

I usually never write reviews for anything because I don't like to register with websites when I can avoid it.  However, this company actually made it worth my while and fully deserves every good thing that comes to them.  I woke up this morning with a broken water heater...big puddle on the floor and NO HOT WATER.  I phoned about five highly-ranked companies from Yelp, three came to my house to give me a quote.  All of them wanted to charge me an arm and a leg and said that there was no way around it.  Then I phoned Kevin, the president of Big Blue Plumbing and Heating.  The first thing he asked me to do was to check the tank to see if it had a warranty, which would save me a couple of hundred dollars.  Since it was expired, we discussed other options for savings such as going with a smaller tank and so forth.  In the end I asked him to replace the tank with one of the same size and the cost was actually several hundred dollars less than any of the other plumbers I had contacted!   Kevin said his men would be finished with their current assignment within the next hour and sure enough, they were at my house exactly one hour later as promised.  They finished their job quickly and just like Kevin, were very kind, respectful and told me to call them if I had any future problems or questions.  I LOVE THIS COMPANY.  They need to be in the next issue of Best of Boston.  I will never need to look for another plumber again.
