HISTORY
Established in 2016.
I started Gilgen Handyman after moving to the central valley from Utah in 2016. I have been in the construction trades for 30 years, the last 15 of which were building custom homes start to finish. I started a handyman business because I am interested in helping people improve or maintain their favorite place to be, home.
ABOUT BUSINESS OWNER
I started Gilgen Handyman in 2016, in 2017 I brought on my oldest son Mitch, we now run it together, I have a wife and three other kids, a daughter that lives in Utah and two more sons here in Visalia and a new grandson. I enjoy building things from raw materials almost as much as I enjoy repairing things that people think can't be repaired.

SUMMARY: Quality work, but make your full complete plan and get it done in one project. Monitor the work, and do a complete walk thru before the end to ensure all is done. Thoroughly review the bid to ensure all details are captured. I don't understand why a linen cupboard and shower door installation would be excluded from a full bathroom remodel bid (tiny bathroom too). Longest review I've ever written to be fair and honest. I'm disappointed with details and follow up.
UPDATE:
I originally gave a generous review of Mike & Mitch because I appreciated that I could be hands-off during my mother's remodel; I was in town to help & managing many other things for her care at the time. They did all they could without having to engage me and were respectful of all requests. Because of that I left out my complaints, such as skipping the linen cupboard entirely in what was supposed to be a complete BA remodel. My bad for not seeing the item missing from the quote. It just needed paint. I took a few hours prior to the remodel to clean everything out, but it wasn't touched. Other details were also missed - like properly securing the toilet roll holder and patching/painting where a curtain rod had previously hung. Not a huge deal overall, but as with any project, a clear walk through and detail management is needed.
**I've dropped this review due to a lack of follow up/going quiet for agreed work. Shower doors were not available in time for the project, so they agreed to return to install the door and also install much needed handrails for my mom to keep her stable & independent in her home. They agreed in person that they would do this work. On 10/20 I asked for help, completely detailed the need and parts ordered. On 10/23 I was told they'd make time for the project on 11/8. My bad for taking a week to get back as I was extra busy with new job & other mom needs & had to review original bid for new charges. I agreed add'l fees 11/1. On 11/7 it was confirmed they'd do the work 11/9. On 11/8 I was told they couldn't make it & asked to move it to the next week. I never heard from them again. Today is 12/11 and mom is in thee hospital after a bad fall and broken leg. Family will help me finish the work ourselves as best we can. I get their busy, and I contributed to 1wk delay from the 10/20 request, but if you commit to something you should follow through.
==========
I found Gilgen through online research to help with my mom's bathroom remodel in Armona (I live in SoCal & don't know local options personally). Let me tell you, I was so very relieved to have Mike and Mitch on my team the week they did the work. They were very professional, delivered on what was needed, with complete view to my needs and wants. Their work is good, and they are very professional and respectful. Very clean, organized, just all around good. I never give 5 stars btw; I have to be impressed.
Not only did they do a quality job, but they just got the work done with little input or direction from me - something I needed and wanted - and they knew it.
This remodel was done out of necessity. My mom's 50yr old shower and bathroom was in disrepair. I was overwhelmed with all that's required to care for a parent from afar, and they managed all the details in respect of that - engaging me only when I needed to make a decision.
I saw another a-hole reviewer that gave them 1-star for not getting back soon enough. Dude! People are busy, give them time to respond! I NEVER had issues hearing back. Drop them an email and give them time to get back. They don't have an office receptionist, they're smart and manage it all themselves.

INCREDIBLE handyman! Mike and his son Mitch. The first time I hired them was when I moved into my house. Had a list of things I wanted done; new toilets in both bathrooms, new ceiling fans in dining and living rooms, shelves made for pantry, the list had about 15 things on it. They whipped it out in less than 8 hours for a VERY reasonable price... super impressed- they cleaned up after ever job- nothing was left behind. Did I mention their trailer? Mobil workshop- incredible! I have since used them several more times and each time they have done an AMAZING job! They come on the day/time they say they're going to come, they fast and efficient, they clean up after themselves and dispose of everything. Believe me- you won't be sorry you hired these guys!
It says handyman but that is an understatement. Replaced a garage door, replaced patio cover support beams, repaired gutters, and repaired damaged fascia. They really know what they are doing. Very professional with all the right tools and very tidy. I have no hesitation in recommending them and I have no doubt I will call upon them again.
Never showed up for the appointment we scheduled to give an estimate for work needing to be done.
Not sure he understands how to use his voicemail. Looking at his responses on here in kind of glad he never responded.

We had a built in dog door and wanted to close it , these guys came and within a short time the hole was gone like it never happened. The Stucco looks like it did and the sheet rock job is great! I will call them again Next time
Our pocket door needs a true fix: new door, going through the wall to install new track, hangers, etc. Our budget wasn't ready for that, so Mike worked out a temporary fix and suggested a few little things we could do ourselves. Took about 15 mins and no charge.
His business card says, I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.
Look forward to sending Gilgen Handyman more luck when our budget's ready to replace the door, or when other repairs are needed around the house.
Mike Gilgen & his son Mitch have done many handyman jobs in our home. They are extremely professional, friendly, speedy, but get the job done right. It's like having family in your home doing all those things you can't do. My husband is gone for work often, so having someone like Mike & Mitch come in your home and know you can trust them and feel safe, means a lot to me. I would recommend them for any job, small or large. They are just AMAZING.....................

We have had a horrible pantry situation since we moved into our home. We finally saw some ideas on the home improvement shows that seemed like they might work for our situation. We contacted several people/businesses and it seemed like no one really wanted our business or our job was not important or big enough for them. We finally found Mike Gilgen from Gilgen Handyman and Construction. He was responsive, came out exactly on time every time. He understood exactly what we wanted and explained what we could and could not expect, given the specifics of the corner location next the garage door entering the washroom/pantry. Not only did he deliver exactly as promised, on time and on budget, but completely exceeded our expectations and we are so happy and impressed with the work and finished product. No more looking around for help with projects we need help with or that exceed our ability and skill level, our first call every time will be to Gilgen Handyman and Construction!!
Hi Mike, I've called and left messages numerous times with no response regarding furniture my wife and her mother trusted you with to repair. The furniture might be junk to you, but is priceless to them. If you're to embarrassed to call then please drop it off in our driveway. I do have video of you hauling it away and are leaving me no choice regarding my next option on recovering the furniture.
They certainly don't like returning calls or messages. I value common courtesy and am not a fan of rude dismissive behavior.
EDIT/RESPONSE: Nice professionalism with your condescending attitude. You're making yourself look worse, bud. I left you a message weeks ago and never heard back. Perhaps you should educate yourself on how to run a business properly.
EDIT/RESPONSE PART 2: Your lack of professionalism and petty name-calling shows how pathetic you really are. Grow up. I'm glad you never called me back. I wouldn't want someone like you anywhere near my home.
So we bought our house in February and we already knew we were going to remodel the bathrooms. We had never really done any sort of remodel project so I really wanted to do my research and find a contractor I really trusted to be able to do all of these bathrooms eventually. We contacted 5 contractors. They all came out and did site walks. Only three of the 5 contractors gave me quotes. I never heard from the other ones again. I knew what I wanted for the most part, but I still had a ton of questions. Out of the remaining ones only one really stood out and was patient with me and made me feel comfortable. They made the process super easy and honestly did a fantastic job. Thank you so much Gilgen Contstruction for the awesome work. I can't recommend them enough.
