Don quoted us $23000 to replace a boiler and hot water heater, and to
replace some old pumps, expansion tanks, and zone valves. Midway through the job, when everything was torn apart, he changed his quote to $28,800, stating that the boiler and water heater cost him more than he thought it would and that we were getting a cadillac boiler.
I checked with the suppliers in Anchorage and the boiler, water heater and pumps cost about $7000, causing me to doubt Don's claim that the boiler
and water heater cost $5800 more than he forecast. He should have informed
me of the cost increase prior to starting work, not during the work, when I had
little choice to let him continue.
If you choose to use Don for any work, I suggest that you get a written, itemized quote, showing what the materials cost, his markup, his hourly rate, and how many hours the job will take. And then get a competitive bid from another plumber. We hired another plumber to complete the work, and our total cost
was $21000, saving us $2000 over Don's first quote and $7800 below his revised quote.
