We had a terrible experience with one of their plumbers after being a customer for many years, mostly using their heating professionals for our boilers. They failed to fix the problem, actually misdiagnosed it, and then sent us a bill for $276.00. The problem was simple: a newly installed Kohler toilet was leaking (less than a year old), apparently from the base where it attached to the floor. I have replaced toilet innards before myself but I was concerned it was installed incorrectly at the floor connection (by a contractor who refurbished the bathroom) and thought that would be beyond my ability (plus it was new and I normally wrangle old toilets). The plumber first said he could not find any leak and was going to leave without repairing the toilet. Then my spouse put his finger in the water where it was leaking and pointed it out to him. The plumber looked further and concluded that it was leaking from the connection from the bowl to the tank and said that the entire tank had to be replaced because it was all one piece and could not be detached because of the type of model toilet I had purchased (the plumber now declared it was leaking like crazy). That the tank could not be attached seemed odd to me so I contacted Kohler (who are terrific) and they assured me it could indeed be detached, sent me the info on where & how it could be detached and sent the gasket (for free under warranty) which they expected to be the problem if that area was the source of the leak. By the time I finished, the plumber had left the house and I spoke to a manager at Hutzel, who now said that yes, the tank could be detached but the plumber did not have the right tool with him (totally different story). He also contacted Kohler directly which caused Kohler to send the plastic piece above the gasket as well (for free under warranty).
When the parts arrived, I called another plumbing company because I had no confidence that Hutzel could handle this simple problem. The other plumbing company installed the new parts but the ones removed appeared fine and he tightened the base to floor bolts/connections since he thought that was the actual cause of the leak. He charged me $115.00.
Now Hutzel has sent a bill for $276.00 when they failed to fix the problem, misdiagnosed, and sent a plumber without the skill and/or tools to fix the problem.
(There was also a misunderstanding that when my husband booked the repair, he asked if they would carry in a washing machine we had purchased used and install it in the basement. At the time my spouse booked it, he conveyed to me that they said yes, but there would be a small extra charge. But when the plumber arrived he said no way, and the person booking the appointment denied saying that when I called to check. I know my spouse did not imagine it, so I assume that the person booking the appointment thought it was such a ridiculous idea (as the plumber who arrived did) that he said it sarcastically and my spouse did not catch the sarcasm. However, they denied they said it at all and I am certain my spouse is not prone to hearing things that are not actually said. And so the appointment started with both my spouse annoyed that they weren't going to install the washing machine and the plumber annoyed because my spouse expected it to be done per his conversation with the office. None of this justifies the plumber not doing the toilet repair properly).
No one there would admit one mistake made here and if they wanted to retain our business, they would have done so and not charged us more than double what we paid for a real, professional repair.
