I have never regretted calling any service company as much as I regret calling Roto-Rooter (RR) in New Orleans. I used to live in another Louisiana city, have always used RR, and have never experienced anything like this. I called to report a sewage back up in my home. The first RR operative that showed up, within five minutes of entering my house, quoted $15,000 of work on remediating the damage the back flow had caused in my home. I work with infectious diseases and know quite a bit about bacteriology. I was treated to a narrative of idiotic explanations of how bacteria would persist forever in my home if I did not spend the oodles of money, which, considering at the time only about a gallon of disgusting fluid had erupted into my home; I knew to be absolute malarkey.
RR then sent out a technician who did a great job attempting to relieve the blockage. His attempts did not work, and after removing the toilet to access the floor waste drain, he attempted again. Again, his efforts were fruitless. The technician stated that he was having a RR plumber with a camera come to my home, but the technician felt the problem existed on the S&W Board side of the meter, the city's problem. The backup continued and an additional hour elapsed, with me continuously mopping up the slow but persistent flow of murky water into my home.
About an hour later the RR plumber arrived, looked at the situation and told me, It's the city's problem and they will handle it. While the plumber was still examining the drain, I called the Orleans S&W Board to report the problem. The S&W Board told me that before they could handle the situation, I needed to remove the six-inch clean out cap. Since I had never had problems with plumbing in the house, I had no idea where this cap was located. I told the plumber that the city had told me the cap needed to be removed. The RR plumber told me that the city needed to handle the situation and that he was not going to remove the cap, and the city would still fix the problem.
The day dragged on. The S&W Board showed up in early evening only to tell me that the six-inch cap did indeed need to be removed, that the cap was under the house, which is on piers with a crawlspace underneath, and that S&W Board cannot go under the house. Mind you that all day long water had continued to flow into the house, with me continuously mopping, absorbing with towels, and in other ways dealing with the mess.
So after dealing with RR, a whole day had gone by. I am now waiting maybe days for another plumber to show up. The hardwood floors in one part of my house are destroyed and need to be replaced, and the situation continues. All this because I called RR instead of a reputable plumber like Carl Bourgeois. The sad thing is that whatever the RR plumber would have quoted to do the work, I was prepared to pay. I was not given the opportunity.
In addition, I did find the six-inch cap. It is, in fact, under my house. I am sixty-four years of age and have an unhealed broken shoulder from an accident months ago. Yet I crawled under the house after finding about the above problem, in the dark of night, but did not have the strength, and likely not the proper tools, to remove the cap. Thanks, Roto-Rooter, I will never call you again.
