I learned a good Life Lesson today - read and FOLLOW the instructions!  

For the past week I've been trying to get a Lights of America light-sensor activated porch light to work with no luck.  I was replacing one that went bad, and bought the same model.  The first replacement I received and hooked up (only 2 wires how hard could it be) and turned it on.  Of course it didn't work because it was light outside, so I put my finger in front of the light sensor and it still didn't turn on.  So after about an hour of trying to fix the problem, switch wire connections, etc I sent it back to Amazon and ordered another one thinking this one was defective.

Today I got the second replacement and hooked the two wires up - black to black and white to white.  Flip the switch, put my finger over the sensor, and NOTHING!  Baffled, I got my battery tester (I don't have an actual electricity tester) and tested the lines from the house to socket, I got activity on the meter, so I figured it wasn't bad wiring from the house since there was electricity making it out to the fixture.  But for some reason I couldn't get it to turn on my new light!  Frustrated, I called Core and the owner Craig said he didn't have any pressing appointments until later, and was able to come out in about 45 minutes.  He came out commented how close it was, he only lives 5 miles away.

Now Craig is an interesting guy - cool, calm, hustler.  I kind of dig his weird sense of humor.  He told me it would be $135 troubleshooting fee.  For the risk, time to drive (5 minutes!), etc.  He nearly gave me a heart attack!  I thought he'd charge me $20-40 for a 10 minute job, but no.  After a long haggle, he dropped the price to $95, giving me a neighborly discount.  After a couple minutes, he cut back and restripped the two wires coming out of the wall/fixture (oxidized wires - corrected was the description in the invoice).  He attached these to the new porch light, mounted it, put a piece of tape over the light sensor, and turned on the switch.  Lo and behold it worked!  Job done.  Craig proceeded to clean up.  He offered to check my wall switch and breaker box to make sure things were in tip top shape, and also because I'm sure he knew how easy the job was he just did.  Craig did mention that there was some burning around the porch fixture, and it was probably due to bad contacts between the wires.

After he tightened 4 screws in the light switch on the wall, he opened the breaker panel outside and tightened about 6 more screws (panel tune-up listed on the invoice), I paid him, thanked him and he left.  

I proceed to put my finger over the light sensor on the porch light and it didn't work.  Oh no!! I thought.  I took it apart and made sure all the connections were still intact.  Everything looked good.  So I decided to put a piece of black tape over the sensor - to my amazement, the light turned on!!!!  So using my finger to block the sensor didn't work, but a piece of tape did?  None of these fixtures were defective after all, I just needed to tape over the sensor to confirm they worked - just like the instructions said!!!

So yes Craig was able to get my light to work, when I wasn't.  The job consisted of stripping two 16 gauge wires, connecting them to the fixture with twist-on connectors, and he charged me $95 to do that!  I learned that I could have avoided all the time and money if I had just followed the instructions.  

Craig seems like a good guy, kinda bad jokes, but I'm kind of bummed that I got charged so much to do so little.

I called Jimmy with Spark it Up Electric and he was very responsive and helpful! He was able to come by that day to check out my faulty outlet and fixed it on the spot!  He is fast and efficient and I felt safe with him in my home. I also had him install a ceiling fan, which is awesome! Great priced and reliable too! I would definitely hire him again!!!

Mark and his team are top notch. My electric service box overheated and was damaged during the September long weekend heat wave we experienced here in San Diego. Mark's team showed up promptly to make temporary repairs so I could continue to maintain my household while we scheduled in a full electric service replacement. They helped navigate the entire process which takes weeks and requires significant coordination with the local utility, obtaining various approvals, completing the actual electric box replacement and then finally certification and drywall repair. They managed each step in the process and did an excellent job completing the work on-time and as budgeted. I highly recommend them for any electric service repairs or if you are considering upgrading your electric service for solar or for EV charging.

Technician experience was not the best but the job was done, however there was a billing dispute.  Don the owner is a class act and reached out to me regarding the billing dispute.  I may use them again due to their customer service however I'll request a different technician.

When we sold our house and had a home inspection done, we needed to replace a few GFIs for the new owner.  We had limited time, and wanted it done right.  So I called Brilliant Electric.  They sent a guy fast, he was a pro and quickly took care of the problem.  Best of all, no price gouging.  They were fast and fair!  Rare in this day and age.

If I still lived in the area, these guys would be my go-to electricians 100% of the time.

Daniel was very professional and responsive; you don't feel like being rushed when talking to him. He installed an exterior outlet. I had him check a 10-30 outlet, and, per his recommendation, I had him replace it with a 14-50 type for safety. He maintains a high quality of work at a reasonable price. Well, I just found my go-to electrician.

I hired Darrell to install aluminum cable railing for my San Diego home and he was all you could ask for: prompt, polite and professional. He provided a quote that was totally fair (not the cheaper and not the most expensive).  He showed up the night before to verify the location, the supplies and to confirm that's he'd be there the next day.  He finished the job beautifully and with great care.  I highly recommend this professional!

These guys were great - after trying to talk through a possible solution over the phone, they found time between appointments to come over and resolve a relatively minor issue with our outlets. They were friendly and efficient, no surprises, and even stayed a few extra minutes to fix an outlet box that wasn't quite deep enough in the wall and previously left the plate hanging out a few millimeters. Always hoping we won't have to call the pros again, but if the need arises, I'll call these guys for sure.

Such an amazing experience!!!   I had an issue at work and didnt know where to turn.  I called Richard and he sent someone out the same day to give me an estimate.  When they came to do the work Richard noticed another hazard that I had and was able to add this to my estimate for pennies on the dollar.  The craftsmanship was amazing, pricing was great and the overall experience I had was outstanding.  Would reccomend to anyone from commercial to residential.

JW Electric just finished the electrical rough of my kitchen and did an outstanding job.  I live in an old house and Jay was able to eliminate, correct and improve upon some 80 years worth of homeowner engineered electrical efforts.   In addition, he provided some very solid and cost effective improvement recommendations that really upgraded my overall job.  He and his partner showed up on time, worked solid through the day and completed when he said they would.   To top it off, Jay even returned to my house to return some funds I overpaid...  so not only hard working and reasonable, but also honest and trustworthy!  I am looking forward to having JW Electric do the finish work once my cabinets are in, as well as some additional electrical work in other parts of the house!

I lost power to half my home. He was able to come same day. Not only did he restore power but he fixed other electrical problems I had throughout my home. Very friendly and overall good guy. Would most definitely recommend.
